If that was my point why would I have said 'I think he's right to be coming down hard on him btw, only making a point.' in my previous post?

Simply pointing out the irony and thinking it'd be funny to see how Keane would react if a player behaved like he did in his early career.

Some people are very defensive when it comes to matters realting to RK obviously, it was a light hearted comment hence the smiley at the end of the original post.

Apologies Drumcondra, i just saw your comment and posted a reply, didnt get the full story!;)

yeah I4E , chill out!!!!

It wouldnt be like citizen to jump to conclusions either would it??!!! See Liam Brady thread!!;)

Yes there is a distinct lack of icons.

Rumours about another incident regarding Stokes on Sunderland message boards.Noticed he has been left out of squads by Keane recently.Hope its not true but some mackem supporters reckon himself and Halford will be shown the door this transfer window.

I wouldn't be too upset tbh if he left. He needs coaching and games more than he needs a bollicking.

i think he needs all three eirebhoy........They seem to be comparing him to Thornton...don't think they are far off the mark at the moment...Has talent ..whether he has desire to succeed and be a major star is out woth the jury at the moment

I don't think he's anywhere near as bad as people make out though. Sean McCaffrey can't speak highly enough of him. He always comes across really well in interviews and has an intelligent head on his shoulders.

KEANO'S IN A HUSH-UP
6 January 2008

STOP the presses ... Roy Keane does have a soft side, after all.
The Sunderland gaffer found further evidence that managing a football team doesn't just mean picking 11 players and sending them on to the pitch when he had to step in to sort out a dispute between his forward Anthony Stokes and a neighbour.
Keane's office took a phone call from an irate woman demanding to speak to him and, when she was told people couldn't just ring up and get the Irishman, she replied in no uncertain terms that if he didn't return her call within the hour she'd be going to the newspapers.
Ten minutes later Keane, wisely, belled her up and the woman lodged a complaint that Stokes had been playing music too loud at all hours of the day.
And it seems her complaint hit the mark. Keane assured her there would be no more parties, Stokes found the remote and, two days after the call, a bunch of flowers arrived from Keane and the club offering their sincere apologies.

Edited to say beaten to it by Neil!

Yeh but allegedly the music was Westlife. There is only so far you can go defending people however young.

Seriously though I still think this lad has serious talent but it is worrying he is not even making the Sunderland squad atm.A loan move to a championship club could be the making of him.
C'mon Anthony you have the ability, make us proud.

Absolutely disgraceful "journalism."

Even worse for the people thinking he's going to be a failure because of that.

The guy has talent and he's not even 20 yet.

Take the microscope off him and let him get on with it.

It is a different rumour that is apparently keeping him and halford out of the squad. ..Won't state what it is as it is only a rumour at the mo and I don't want the forum getting into bother...Stokes is talented and looked class underage..hope he comes through all this and becomes a star

Apparently they're in the reserve squad.

Edit - According to official website all three in reserve squad tonight.

Report (http://www.safc.com/news/?page_id=13934)

Anthony Stokes grabbed two goals to give Sunderland a well-deserved derby win over Newcastle tonight.

The Republic of Ireland striker opened the scoring in the first half and netted a second just after the hour mark at Kingston Park.

It completed a good night's work for the 19-year-old, who hasn't featured for Sunderland since their 2-1 defeat at Reading before Christmas.

Youngster Jamie Chandler, a second half substitute, completed the win with an 82nd-minute goal after Black Cats defender Peter Hartley gave Newcastle a lifeline with an unlucky own goal.

Neil Bailey named a strong side for the Wear-Tyne derby, with Greg Halford taking up an unfamiliar central midfield role alongside Liam Miller and Stokes lining up with David Connolly up front.

Defender Russell Anderson also got an invaluable 90 minutes under his belt as he played for the first time since recovering from an ankle operation last year, while Ian Harte and Ross Wallace were also in the Sunderland starting XI.

Stokes went close after 14 minutes when his left-footed drive from just outside the penalty box flashed just wide of Fraser Forster's right-hand post, and he worked the United 'keeper again in the 20th minute when he got on the end of Jake Richardson's right-sided cross but his header was comfortably gathered.

The home side went the closest to opening the scoring after 21minutes when Jonathan Godsmark found space on the right to send over a cross to the far post for striker Andrew Carroll, but he could only turn the ball back across the face of goal and Sunderland cleared.

Stokes hit the post a minute later when he was put through with a clever ball by Miller, but he made amends in the 23rd minute. After a mix-up in the United defence, Miller laid the ball off for Stokes and he hit a low, right-footed drive past Forster's right.

The visitors almost doubled their lead a minute later when Miller sent over a curling cross from the left and Halford came steaming to meet the ball with a thumping header that smacked Forster's left-hand post.

Connolly should have buried a chance to make it two after 53 minutes when substitute David Dowson played Stokes in on the right and he played a ball in behind the United defence for the striker, but Forster did well to save at his feet.

But Stokes made it two just after the hour mark with a well-worked goal. Connolly played the ball to Miller about 30 yards from goal and, after shaping up to shoot, played a slide-rule ball to Stokes on the right inside the penalty area and he hammered an acute, low drive which crept just inside Forster's left-hand post.

United pulled one back just five minutes later when Cats goalkeeper Trevor Carson could only parry Carr's strong free-kick and when Hartley tried to control the ball it bounced off him and past the Sunderland 'keeper.

The home side had a great chance to equalise in the 80th minute when Carroll dispossessed Anderson and played a clever ball through to the attacking Godsmark, but Carson raced out the box and slid in at his feet to clear.

The visitors grabbed their third in the 82nd minute with another well-worked goal. Dowson crossed from the right and Connolly did well inside the area to lay off for sub Chandler, and he buried his chance with a right-footed drive past Forster.

Connolly almost made it four in the last minute when he was put through but he could only hit the side netting under pressure from Edgar.

Hopefully Keane gives him a decent chance up front now.

How about Stokes and Connolly up front against Portsmouth on Sunday with Miller behind them? Each of them had a part in 2 of the 3 goals.

well anytime he's been given the chance to play up front he's scored goals.

u17, u19, reserves, and with the First team at Sunderland.

He scored against derby, scored (but was ruled offside) against villa, and would have scored another if Kenye Jones would have passed to him vs reading.

That's not scoring though. But it's nice to see he got two last night. Hopefully now he'll get a run in the first team and start scoring regularly. To be honest though from what I've seen so far I don't see what all the hype is about. But then again, I haven't seen enough to make a definitive judgement on him.

The @sshole didn't even have the decency to put his name to the apology.
Maybe I could find out by clicking around the website but IMO an apology should be signed off.
I wouldn't normally read the People but does anyone know who he was so that I can avoid any other rubbish that he writes?

not only did he not have the decency to put his name against the apology, the story was a two page spread with a sensational headline- the apology is half a paragraph on a website that most people won't see.

not only is he an @sshole, but there quite a number of very sad, cowardly people on this site (and others) that spread these stories (along with the other more serious ones) every chance they get- without realising the implications they can have on a 19 year old boy.

Very poor offside call against Stokes a couple of minutes ago. He would have been clean through one on one against James. He's playing well. Sunderland are playing 4-5-1/4-3-3 with Stokes and Murphy out wide. Stokes started on the right but Murphy struggled on the left and they switched half way through the first half. Miller playing well too.

Very impressed with Stokes, Miller and especially Murphy today. Great to see and good for whoever is the new manager. Morrision is back to his best at Palace. Duff is back playing. Keane is playing every game. S.Reid is back playing and playing well. Player wise things are looking up.
