I think he is more referring to the media. I don't think he has any particular axe to grind (at least no more than normal) with Trap or how he has been evaluated as a part of the Irish squad.
Sounds like him and Lennon get on well. If he achieves nothing else other than consistent first team football for Celtic, then he will have managed to turn over a big enough leaf in his football life.

Stokes happy to fight for place
Celtic striker Anthony Stokes will seek guarantees from manager Neil Lennon about playing regularly.
Followed by the story.........
Celtic striker Anthony Stokes has not sought guarantees from manager Neil Lennon about playing regularly.
And the 23-year-old, who scored against Hibernian on Sunday, insists he never felt like leaving the club when dropped for a period last season..........

Don't know why Stokes would be suspicious of the media!

Scored again today. A nice 1-2 with Commons and a good finish. Thats 4 in 4 games (according to SSN who were covering the Dublin Super Cup). Can't argue with that
Scored again today.
Celtic goal: Celtic take the lead as Anthony Stokes collects Daniel Majstorovic's headed knockdown to lash home from close range.

I must admit it seems I may have underestimated Mr. Stokes' ability to score against a team from a half-decent league though.

Played well off Samaras. Could do a job off Walters perhaps.
Not this campaign though, unfortunately his attitude was all wrong around the time of the friendlies in particular. Will have to wait until WC14 qualifiers now to stake another claim.

Another brace for Stokes today. Eight goals in his last eight games. I know his attitude isn't the best but I'd like to see him be given some consideration between now and the summer.

If he keeps his current form, he certainly warrants consideration. I would have him 5th choice striker at the moment, behind Keane, Doyle, Long and Walters. Trap has him 7th choice (at the very best) behind Cox and Best (and possibly Keogh). Christ we have some options in attack.

It's hard to know where to put Stokes in the pecking order. He was prolific at underage for Arsenal and in the SPL but has struggled in the EPL and Championship, albeit he was very immature at the time, so comparing him to players in the EPL is difficult. To me he's the closest other forward we have in style to Keane, he can be a lethal finisher but also has a lot of guile and an eye for a pass but can be very greedy. By the time June comes he may very well be the Irish striker who is in the richest vein of form. I don't quite know the true story behind his pulling out last summer but it would be a shame if he's fallen totally out of consideration as a result.

I think the likes of Connolly at Southampton as well as Heffernan and Daly in the SPL would have better chances of making the squad then he does. And for good reason too.

And he hasn't changed one bit since. Banging in goals against crap SPL teams is his level I'm afraid. I'd be surprised if Trap rates him in his top 10 forward players at this stage. Incredible to think he would almost certainly be first choice striker for Scotland were he from there.

Give it a rest. Walters didnt show up in the summer either remember and has pulled out of other squads and was criticised and now all is rightly forgotten. Give stokes a break he is a fine footballer who will score goals if he plays up top. All this rubbish saying he didnt score goals in the championship completely ignores he was playing out wide. Scoring goals for a rubbish celtic side is no mean feat. He has been the one celtic player who has saved lennons job over the last 5 or 6 games and works his socks off unlike what some on here would have you think. He will be an excellent player for ireland

I think he's begining to mature a little even since the summer. When he drifted out of Celtic's team this season he got his head down and worked his way back into the team. A year ago I reckon he'd have handed in a request and have moved on. He was one of a couple of players that dragged Celtic back to a draw while 3-0 down against Kilmarnock. I believe he's developing a resilience and determination becoming of a professional footballer. To say Connolly, Heffernan and Daly are ahead of him in the pecking order is just facetious.
I have a feeling the 'tired' pullout from last summer was to do with family issues in the background. We all know well about his father and an unsavoury character as we might find his old man those issues would still effect him. I'd be willing to give him another chance in light of this.

Walters had been carrying a shoulder injury for the last 5 months of last season which got progressively worse, couldn't train but could play with painkillers. By the end of the season he had reached the end of his tether. Whatever the communication was about that or his failure to turn up, at least he was genuinely crocked.

so what if stokes didn't want to play at the end of last season, he's the one who lost out from the situation.
not that i'm holding any grudges against him but there are at least 6 good strikers ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment and it might be a long while before we see him in green again

Not even close. Stokes is a class above all those players.
I think Stokes will have to find a Premier League club to break into the Ireland squad. Like Poor Student said, he's the closest in style we have to Robbie but he needs to be playing at the same level. Players like Long and Best can show their class in the Championship/SPL but somebody like Stokes who doesn't offer so much around the field needs to do it at a higher level.

Why do you think he is a class above those players when he scored 4 or so goals in 61 games in England!!?
Euro 12 for him is academic as he will be "fatiqued" by the time the tournament comes round.

Stokes versus Daly. Stokes has scored more goals than Daly despite being 5 years his junior. All the more remarkable that Stokes has only scored 4 goals in 61 games in England.
Stokes versus Heffernan. Stokes has a higher goals per game ratio than Heffernan. And is 6 years his junior. And Heffernan couldn't get his game with Sheffield Wednesday, whoever they are.
Stokes versus Connolly. Is that midget still playing? :)

Not that I'd have Connolly anywhere near the squad but he's playing at a higher level than Stokes and has 5 goals despite not starting every week.

Anthony's thread has been dormant for while.
He has just scored a beauty for Celtic, a delicate lob from the left side of the box, over the usual 20 bodies, into the top corner.
Puts him ahead of Connolly for sure.

Stats from 4-5 years ago are not the benchmark of a player now - surely?
I am no longer saying he should be in the squad (I have done previously) but I think his ability warrants him to be there or thereabouts for a squad place. Its his head that needs some work doing on it and puts him behind our regular squad strikers.

That's the thing, Lennon seems to leave Stokes out of a lot of the big games. Particularly last season, Stokes' father aggravating for a move away due to a lack of trust in the big ties.
Bit of a slip from Lennon here, or is it a personal touch?
I see young Jack McClean was picked from Sunderland and if Anthony keeps going in the same vein as he is going, I will be putting a call into the FAI and saying: ‘Look. I think this kid is worth another look

He's entitled, as is any manager has done in the past, present and future.
Maybe Pat Fenlon, being a Tim will also put in a word?
Anyway, Stokes isn't good enough, due to the reduced quality of the SPL, as much as anything else...
We have enough players playing better in the EPL currently.

Stokes is nowhere near good enough for the Irish squad. The strongest strike force in years for the squad, and he's calling for a SPL player to be in the squad? Laughable at minimum.

Celtic can at least draw with an Italian team, in Italy, in a competitive game. :D
If league standard is the barometer by which you can judge a player, then I wonder how Landon Donovan could blend in so well at Everton or Robbie Keane could recover a good part of his game in the MLS.
Stokes had done enough to get a call up to the squad last year but didn't turn up. The master only calls once, c'est la vie.
Charlie Darwin
22/02/2012, 2:39 PM
McGeady was called up while at Celtic because he was clearly good enough. Jelavic was in the same scenario with Croatia. Some of Stokes' movement and finishing in the Europa games was top class. Those are the games you have to judge him by and I'd say that he should at least be pushing for a place, attitude problems notwithstanding.

if stokes had of turned up last summer and played well he would most likely be goin to the euros and we never would of heard of cox. he didn't. he may or may not be good enough, either way he still hasn't proved it yet. there are several players ahead of him now who have proved themselves good enough. he might be waiting a while

NEIL Lennon says he would be happy to plead Anthony Stokes’ case with the Republic of Ireland football authorities if he thought it would enhance his striker’s transfer value, sorry, chances of being selected for his country.
ArdeeBhoy
22/02/2012, 9:05 PM
Why would he want to enhance his value now though?
Given no-one's likely to sign him for at least 6 months...
Fair points made by Geysir & CD btw.
Our only striking question-mark is over Cox, possibly Best instead, though injury against him.
Stuttgart88
22/02/2012, 9:33 PM
Because the transfer window coincides with the Euros, and a few weeks after. Celtic were very happy to take several million for McGeady. They'd be happy to do the same with Stokes & Hooper I reckon. Anyway, the remark was somewhat tingue in cheek, but not entirely.
I like Stokes as a player as it happens, but in fairness I think Cox would score a similar amount at Celtic. Stokes has a bit of star quality about him, but a dodgy attitude.
I still recall being in awe of his ball striking in the warm up to one of our games at Croker (Slovakia? and maybe it was half-time). Our subs were being fed moving balls by Alan Kelly and taking shots at our sub keeper. Sokes buried every single one whereas the others were slicing and pulling and conjuring up all kinds of mis-hits.
