Stokes as a Winger is as Baffling to me as McShane as a fullback... Yet managers persist!!
You've got to keep McShane out of the middle. Disaster waiting to happen.

Got a brace tonight. Nice left foot volley in to bottom corner and a right footed effort from close range, in off the post. Played in the centre with Hooper and did well for first half. Celtic once again came out in the second half and were awful, nearly allowing St. Johnstone back from 3-0 down. Ended 3-2 just.....

What position did they play him in, up front or on the wing?

Think he was on the left wing with Samaras & Hooper up front. At least that's what Sky Sports score centre has down on the team sheet.

Nope. He played up top with Hooper as per original post

And even got his first ever 'threat to his person', in an attack on his house in Scotland. He seemed quite relaxed about it all, according to the Guarniad report!

Hes playing up front today with Hooper out injured and he has looked very good so far, his movement is excellent and has shown some lovely skill. I think hes our most exciting striker outside of the main 2 of Keane and Doyle

I saw bits and pieces of the game and Stokes looked to be a live wire throughout. Left isolated up front a bit too much as Samaras is somewhat bi-polar, but nevertheless a good intelligent hard working display by Anthony.
Against Rangers he was disappointing and it was not just playing on the right side. He was given plenty of license to cut inside but he was not as smart as he can be with his play. No doubt though, he is a striker with room to improve.

Didn't see the game today but heard he got 3. This lad is a natural goalscorer and going places. Such a shame he's not in the squad for the Norway friendly!

Absolutely, this would be the ideal game for him to play in.

Stokes was poor today. Should have been sent off for a reckless takle on Papac, could have broken his ankle. All he did today was drift infield and shoot wildly from distance with his left peg. There's an awful element of greed to his game. I know they say it's a healthy instinct for a striker but I think his decisions are way too far self centred.
I have to say that since Stokes has been played properly up front with Hooper he's laying on a lot of chances and assists and looking much more useful. He has skill, strength, vision, decent pass, a keen eye for goal, a good finish and he's very industrious. I think he's potentially Ireland's best striker after Keane and Doyle and could be leading our line in three or four years time.

Completely agree with you. Why Trap has not picked him for the upcoming friendly is very strange. His industry and team play have greatly increased as he has matured.

Subbed on 60mi s tonight. Tactical, Celtic 2-0 down at Tynecastle. Fairly quiet tonight but so was Samaras (well quiet / useless in his case) so it's a strange one.
Our man Conor Sammon scored again for Killie EDIT: he just got a second

Sammon is a legend. Up to second top goalscorer in the SPL now. Kenny Miller is running away with it though.

not scored since a hat trick in early November - http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/PlayerDetails?playerID=42483 -but he's still the third top scoring Irish player this season so far with 9 goals - http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/MonthlyStats?month=13

Stokes was out injured or sick for a few games in December. He played in the game before this one and did alright. McCourt has played himself into the team - started and finished the game. Lennon took a few selection risks (some were forced) and changed formation. Samaras played alone upfront off McCourt and played with purpose.
Stokes will get back into the team and should have plenty more opportunities this season.

Hooper is out injured, first choice striker.
As geysir says, McCourt has played his way in to the team with 3 consecutive 90 minute appearances (who'd have thought it!) Samaras bizarrely imo still gets his opportunity and was unplayable yesterday - fair play to him.
Stokes was on the bench and did not feature, and he hasnt done much of late, when he did get a run of games he was playing out wide which didnt really get the best out of him.

Stokes is a fancy dan. The company he is keeping in Glasgow leaves a lot to be desired. Needs to get a grip real soon, or he is heading for the scrap heap.

Daryl Murphy too?
Got 15 minutes the other week. Came on as sub only to get 'injured' himself. From what I've read on the various message boards, he's getting a lot of stick at the moment from the Celtic support. Body language not right, looks out of his depth etc...
Have to say, I have never fancied him from the very little I have seen of him. Anyway I know he has his own thread but Murphy will be a failure before Stokes at Celtic in my opinion. Thats not meant to sound as negative as it does!!!

Care to expand? He has had similar accusations thrown at him in the past at almost every club he was at but seemed to have 'matured' in recent times.

Not in the least bit surprised at this, it was the only reason anyone could understand why Hibs let him go for under 1.5 million with two years left on his contract. The lad is a natural striker but trouble seems to follow him wherever he goes, didn't matter at Hibs and Falkirk where he was the first name on the teamsheet every week, but if he blows this chance after everything that happened at Sunderland he's done for as a top level striker.
The difference with Daryl Murphy is that he's not good enough. Stokes is good enough but unfortunately is also a complete tool.

Isn't it more or less tradition for all Irish players in Glasgow to spend every night in the clubs? Neil Lennon used to love getting beaten up and Darren O'Dea used to act as McGeady's bodyguard when they went out. It's not coincidence O'Dea left right after McGeady went to Moscow - his work in Glasgow was done.
Leon Best would love it.
you have to question anyone who was writing about how great he was in the Star every week at 15 years of age.

Being a glass half full person, Stokes' work ethic has impressed me at Celtic, and even his celebrations when they scored against Rangers when he was on the bench, indicate he is developing into a more mature player.

I read that Celtic are making a serious bid to sign Norwegian international Huseklepp, the one who scored against us. He is a better player than our young Anthony.
The Celtic squad is getting well bloated. Should the signing be completed, I'd say Murphy will be farmed out to oblivion and Anthony will have a serious challenge to get game time.

Scored an injury time penalty to spare Celtic's blushes tonight against Hamilton and had a second disallowed moments later in seemingly dodgy circumstances.
Junior

Yeah, it was a pressure penalty which he tucked away with pure conviction. Then scored a bullet header in the 6 mins of added time (3 Reds were shown) but the linesamn ruled the corner had gone out of play before coming back in again. tight call but probably correct having only seen it once.
Gave the officials a right mouthful on his way off the pitch - In much the same way that a scally schoolkid would give a teacher or shopkeeper. I know tensions were heightened and all that but it just seemed so unnecessary - Lennon doesnt set a great example in this regard though either.

I'm no Celtic supporter but are the fans happy with Lennon?
He doesn't seem to be doing a great job but the win against Rangers and his overall status as a legend probably means they'l back him, does it?

He's a rookie, so the fanbase all have an element of doubt but as you say he has Celtic in his blood, was a great player for us and has done relatively well thus far. The win at Ibrox is still fresh in the memory so thats good news for him.
He had the disaster of SF cup exit last season, European exit in August, plenty of dropped points at home this season. So its not like hes the best thing since sliced bread but Id say the support are generally very positive towards him.

Great penno alright. I thought he was going to miss.
Mad game, or at least the bits I saw were. Accies' goal was controversial. McGinn was booked for diving when it was a slam dunk penalty. Stokes' late goal was correctly ruled out, but what a call to make by linesman Murphy. Af if Celtic's paranoia levels weren't already high enough this season.
Still, it was linesman Murphy who flagged Scott McDonald onside for his winner v Rangers a few years ago which ultimately won Strachan the league. He was well offside!

It was a mistake with the McDonald onside, no question but it was tight enough Stutts.

Oft times, in commentator speak, a player being a few cm offside is described as being a yard offside.

It will never last.
It did -they got married ;)
I thought I'd bump this thread started by the late Eirebhoy. Stokes was a prodigy (not to be confused with a Proddie) and we had all these huge hopes. Something then goes wrong in between. True he made something of name for himself but the downward spiral didn't take long and he spends much of the time warming his backside on the bench of a mediocre Celtic side.
On a separate issue, I often wonder why failed centre forwards like Connolly/Elliott don't convert themselves to full back. They have pace, reasonable ball control so why not play full back ? Doesn't take long to learn the trade and you don't need to be tall (e.g. Carr, Irwin) to play the position.
