The slide continues. After playing and losing to 5 of the top 11 teams in the world (Greece 11th......) in a calendar year, it looks like we'll finish the year in 44th. Deservedly.

The 'thumbs down' icon in the thread title looked a bit out of place there for a while but its aptness has returned with a vengeance!

Not as bad as first feared; we end the year ranked 42nd...

http://www.goal.com/en-ie/news/3942/ireland/2012/12/19/3613746/ireland-drop-six-places-to-end-2012-at-42-in-fifa-ranking

Ireland have fallen to 42nd position in the December Fifa ranking, their lowest position since 2006.

The Boys in Green suffered defeat in the recent friendly against Greece at the Aviva Stadium and the subsequent ranking release has confirmed the six-position drop from November's 36th place.

Giovanni Trapatoni's side have fallen a massive 19 places since January and now find themselves behind Egypt and Haiti, alongside Bolivia and Gabon on 609 ranking points.

How long until Trap arrives to tell us that rankings are irrelevant?

Honestly, how could we be behind Haiti? They dont even have....an eco system anymore. They cut all the trees down to sell the lumber and all the animals died. Im serious.

They also draw players from the League of Ireland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal_Millien

Being fair to us and Haiti, they haven't played Spain, Italy & Germany in 2012...

They have played the US, however, a soccer roster with great hustle and a number of MVPs.

Didn't the US lose to someone 'crap' recently though?
And I think, considerably worse than Haiti...

DannyInvincible

In reverse chronological order, they've lost to Jamaica, Brazil, France, Ecuador, Belgium and Costa Rica since the beginning of September, 2011.

Brazil are 18th! Surely they've never been as low that before?

And this in spite of their exhibition victory over the all-star US roster.

As World Cup hosts and automatic qualifiers, their potential to pick up significant ranking points must be severely limited.

Up one place to 41st despite not having played: http://www.thescore.ie/need-something-to-cheer-about-ireland-are-up-one-place-in-the-fifa-rankings-757780-Jan2013/

IRELAND HAVE HALTED their slide down the FIFA rankings – albeit without playing.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s side began 2012 in 22nd position but, after three defeats at Euro 2012 was followed by the 6-1 annihilation by Germany in Dublin, by December had fallen to 42nd – their lowest end-of-year ranking since 2006.

However, despite the fact that they have featured since a 1-0 loss to Greece in November, the Boys in Green have moved up one place and now sit just behind Haiti, African champions Zambia, Turkey and Bolivia.

Edit: Actually, I think we're up three places. Must be an error in the article. Weren't we 44th when they were last updated?

Mali at 25th!! But they only every seem to play African teams so a bit hard to compare teams from different federations.

We will be judged on our form one way or another so I think we will be lucky to get a 3rd seeding, second seems out the window now?

I think the World Cup seedings (for what good it'll do us) tend to go on previous performances for the top seeds, and then regional splits thereafter.

The seedings for the Euro 2016 qual draw will probably be based on the UEFA coefficients, same as they (http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/uefa/KeyTopics/92/18/20/921820_DOWNLOAD.pdf) were for the Euro 2012 qual draw.
Presently (http://www.football-rankings.info/2012/11/euro-2016-qualifying-draw-seeding-23.html), we are at the lower end of the second batch, not bad considering the 3 losses at the Finals are also considered.

There's definitely more transparency these days on the FIFA ranking's page about how they calculate the points.
Transparency as in, you don't need a knowledge of maths' equations to work it out.

I see Iceland are still keeping their noses ahead of NI despite the IFA's attempts to gain a few ranking points by playing Malta in a friendly.
Meanwhile Iceland took on Russia in a friendly. Capello was asked if this was to prepare them for the upcoming clash against NI. Capello replied, “Unfortunately, Iceland aren’t similar to our next opponents in the qualifying tournament, Northern Ireland,” he said. “ they (Iceland) are a team who pass a lot and they don’t have a system of pelting long balls at a player near the goal.” :D

We strengthen our 22nd place on the UEFA list. Can't use this stunning defensive solidity as a reason to sack Trap.
Meanwhile Iceland continue their roll, steamrolling over 6 teams in the UEFA list to 34th place, nestling in behind Austria.
NI drop down further, down to the depths of pre qualifier standard teams, according to the DeLorean method of minnow weeding.

It's amazing NI are in such deep trouble considering the conventional wisdom that the likes of Wilson and McClean wouldn't get anywhere near their first team.

There was an owc contributor here, who once claimed that Gibson wouldn't get near the NI midfield

I do recall that and various other comments about the other 'dafactors'. We are talking about a culture that promotes this kind of thought (https://twitter.com/AreWeACountry/status/316557058411466753). I'm sure it barely even qualifies as a leap in logic to suggest Gibson would be met by an effective glass ceiling courtesy of Grant McCann and Sammy Clingan.

In the tv highlights, NI were okay against Israel, but undone by a typical Israel performance.
I had a wry black smile at the sight of Dudu, our old nemesis, rolling around the floor in agony.

They'll soon be the fabled 208th team that no one in FIFA care about.

we probably do have our best pool of players in ages but we lack a top quality strikers so will always struggle to score - sad but true

our back four can be as good as most in the world

It was different at that stage as Israel weren't hanging on desperately. There were only one or two opportunities for Dudu, he didn't have to go through his full repertoire but he didn't let us down.
It must be his party piece back in Israel, brings the party to a side splitting standstill as he goes through his agonised time wasting routines, to rousing cries for encore after encore.

Out of interest. With our current ranking what pot would we be in for the Euro qualifying draw? I'm guessing pot 3..

Unless of course we can win our remaining WCQ's, bar Germany away. But won't happen.

I think we made it up to pot 2 after the WCQ draw and before the Euro 2012, but like I said I'm guessing we're back down in pot 3 now...
