Bolton's Matthew Cassidy was on the end of a 4-1 hammering by Man City's reserves in the Manchester Senior Cup last night. No Irish involvement for City (which is odd) but Sun Jihai and Didi Hamann were getting a run out after injury which limited places in the team

The goals are flying in for the Irish players in the lower leagues.
Lawrence, Keogh, Melligan, Byrne and Lee have scored so far and it's not even half time in most of the games. I'd still expect one or two from the following list to score - Long, Connolly, Elliott, Whelan, Clarke and McGeady - also Morrison and Keane (if they come off the bench)

Stokes isn't even in the Sunderland squad - is he injured?

I salute your omnipotence. You didn't predict Stephen Hunt's "bicycle kick" though, or lee frecklington, or barry conlon,(i won't mention leon best and kevin nolan..oops) or Shay Given going off injured. Well done Long, Connolly and McGeady. Still time for the other 3(except clarke who got subbed(

So that was 12 irish on the mark today then ;) (excluding Nolan and including Best  )

Pity only 3 of them were in the top flight.

Paul Heffernan was one I forgot to mention but he didin't score anyway :)

Roeder has told them to forget about it: http://www.eleven-a-side.com/acrossthewater/irish_soccer_detail.asp?newsid=26185

"We have read the reports of Spurs wanting Damien Duff over the weekend, but we have heard nothing from them. "

“In any case, they must know they are wasting their time. Why would we sign Damien Duff in the close season and then sell him on before that season is over?"

“We are trying to build a good squad here at Newcastle United and Duff is very much part of our plans.”

Robbie Savage broke his leg last night and is ruled out for the rest of the season, including the trip to Croke Park in March.
With Robert Earnshaw also out with a groin injury, that's 2 almost definite starters missing for the Welsh

Paul Cahillane and Cillian Sheridan were late subs as Celtic's reserve side beat an Ayr United XI 2-0, in Willie McStay's first game in charge of the reserves. The game was notable for John Kennedy's return to action after 3 years out with a serious knee injury.

Hamann is coming back from injury, he'll replace Reyna. The players City have been linked with in recent weeks have been defenders (Coco, Ball) and strikers (Eastwood, Kepa). Can't recall any midfielders linked.

Hamann's a different player than Reyna though... There's still a week left of the window though, that's a fair point. It goes without saying that at irelands age he has to start more matches if he's gonna be an asset to us. otherwise it's McPhail, Farrelly etc all over again.

Terry Dixon on the mend, signs pro contract(from FAI site)

Irish youth international, Terry Dixon, signs pro forms for 'Spurs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date: Friday, 26 January 2007 Section: International

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Republic of Ireland Youth international Terry Dixon has signed a professional contract with his club, Tottenham Hotspur.

The striker turned 17 years of age last week and Spurs manager Martin Jol has awarded the youngster his first professional deal.

He made 11 appearances for the club’s U18 team but a serious knee injury hampered his progress in this campaign.

Dixon has now resumed training and hopes to re-discover the form that prompted a call-up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad by manager Stephen Staunton for the friendly games against Chile and Netherlands in 2006

London-born Dixon qualifies for Ireland through his mother who was from Bailieborough in County Cavan. He has been capped for Ireland at U16, U17 and U21 levels.

His contribution to Ireland’s U17 UEFA qualifying campaign during 2006 has been recognised by his nomination for eircom/FAI International U17 Player of the Year award.

Nice to see Cian Hughton called up to the U18s. What a great servant Chris was, went about it so professionaly and with a lot of dignity.

I recall Hoddle making a real effort to get Chris to declare for England when they were both at Spurs.

Stephen Ireland was MOTM for City today.

Some quotes from the Manchester Evening News:

However, the pair (Richards and Bale) were upstaged by Ireland who, despite being stationed on the left flank, was behind most of the home side's more inventive moves.
Beasley added another when he beat Kelvin Davis to a long ball from Dunne, who had been a bulwark in the home defence all afternoon.

And the ratings:

9 DUNNE: The game's outstanding player. Rose to and won every challenge
8 IRELAND: He should be put on the ball as much as possible. Far too good for Championship midfield

No, Sturridge was out injured. I was there on my first York City away game, so I knew very little about the home team. I was very impressed with their stadium. It was small and compact, but would be a perfect model for any Irish league teams. They also had very neat terraces behind each goal.

Ian Harte played full 90 for Levante today :-

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/match?id=203963&cc=5739

he set up both their goals from set pieces:

"Levante pegged one back just a minute later, however, Dehu powering a header home from Ian Harte's inviting corner.

And Harte again delivered from a set piece on 74 minutes, this time Reggi connecting with the Irishman's lofted free-kick to pull the score back to 3-2."

unfortunately all of sevilla's goals came from wide areas as well  :o

cardiff v leicester 3-2

McCarthy and Maybury played here with the former giving away the freekick for the home sides opener and looking a sorry sight getting done for straight line speed for another after having been caught under a long straight ball, Chopra did produce a quality finish though. McCarthys defensive partner at leicester has made the most recent Australia squad.

for cardiff, McPhail played and took over the captaicy due to a change and Flood came on on 75 mins with Byrne making an appearence in the 90th min

I watched the game and he looked a bit slow, but he was deadly as usual from the set pieces.

On Seville's first goal, Harte kicked the ball up field to nobody, and they countered to score. Not his fault but he did give away the ball easily a few times in that game.

On the third goal, Harte let the guy run right past him, and he passed it off to another Seville player to score.

Hopefully it is just rust, because as of right now, for every goal he'll help you score from set pieces, he'll make a mistake in the defensive end.

Mind you, we need goals right now so we should probably have him in the squad if not the team.
