Aiden McGeady opened the scoring for Celtic against Dunfermline today, cracking goal too, curled it into the far corner from the edge of the area.
O'Dea made his first start in defence, and could have opened the scoring with a nice turn and shot from a corner.

wolves v leicester 1-2

with McCarthy suspended and Logan dropped following being beaten 3 times from distance last time out, and also failing to ultimately convince on corners lately, Maybury was the only Irish player for leicester on sat, with Breen playing for wolves and Potter an unused sub.

Andy Keogh lobbed he keeper from about 30 yards...

It was an amazing goal IMO, I thought he was about 40 yards out? Matty Taylor-esque...without the volley of course.

David Connolly just scored a 'unbelievable' injury-time equaliser for Sunderland. From what I could get from the radio, he said he got the ball 30 yards out, flicked it over his head, and volleyed it from 25-30 yards out.

Half term marks on Richard Dunne and Stephen Ireland from http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/manchestercity/s/231/231900_man_city_halftime_marks.html

RICHARD DUNNE: Has the odd blip but remains one of the most consistent, able and totally committed players. 8

STEPHEN IRELAND: Just beginning to blossom and much could rest on his cultured shoulders in second half of season. 6

Incidentally, Ireland had more than twice the nearest player for the MOTM poll against West Ham, despite being substituted for the eventual goalscorer Beasley

He's doing well. I was a bit worried when Pressley signed that there was a little too much competition for him behind McManus, Caldwell and Balde plus Pressley. Are the aforementioned trio injured? O'Dea and Pressley started centre back with Paul Lawson the only defender on the bench.

I'm lovin' that intro music. Think its gas that the Japanese commentators can pronounce O'Dea correctly while The Sky Sports fellas take their usual unorthodox approach to Irish pronunciations a la Key-O or Kay-Hill.... "Darren O'Day opened the scoring for Celtic"

over the festive period leicester player cardiff, hull, southampton and sunderland, collecting 4 points. no irish on the score sheets and McCarthy having to wait untill the most recent game to get his starting spot back after his suspension.Logan is on the bench at present but has done enough in his 15 starts to earn a contract extension untill 2010 at the club.Maybury continuies to appear regularly although not a guaranteed pick at present when all are fit.

Logans contract extension here:http://www.lcfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Match/ProfilesDetail/0,,10274~30430,00.html

for sunderland the other day, Elliot played wide right and caused some real problems early on with his trickery movement and decent crossing, Connolly sealed the win for his side late on and Miller also impressed me with his passing in particular, but the leicester midfield didnt exactly cover themselves in glory on the day in their efforts to stop him.

as for Keanes side in general, they were tigerish when they wernt in posession but more stylish and creative while in posession then you generally see at this level, nice movement and comfortably able to keep it high up the park with the irish lads more than playing their part.

could be thinking of Diarmuid O'Carroll, or Cillian Sheridan. O'Brien has played as a striker, but usually does play on the wing, or behind the front two

from http://celticfcblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/celtic-top-of-every-league.html

RIGHT MIDFIELD
Kenny McDowall's constant positional switches have at times seen four different players filling this slot in the course of one game. However, the most common starters here have been Nicky Riley, who has added a yard more pace to his tricky footwork, and the extremely talented Michael McGlinchey. But both players still have a bit of bulking out to do before they can compete at the top level. Perhaps the best bet to step up in this position would be Jim O'Brien, who is strong, direct and pacy. At Youths level Kevin Cawley, Mark Miller and Paul Cahillane have played in this position, with the older Miller looking the most at home. But the others - both 17 - have bags of talent and promise.

STRIKER
The big Bhoys are here! With Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink now a permanent feature of the first team, the Reserves and Youths now boast their own giants in the shape of Icelander Kjartan Finnbogason and Irish colossus Cillian Sheridan. Kjartan missed 18 months through injury and may take time to get fully up to speed. Hopefully he can keep his head up and take out his frustration on opposition defenders. Cillian has scored plenty of goals but at present is a long way short of first team standard in terms of fitness, technique and tactical awareness. But he COULD be a prospect within 18 months. Jim O'Brien has played a lot up front for the Reserves, as have Rocco Quinn, Nicky Riley and Michael McGlinchey. But the best display of finishing this season came from Derek Riordan. And don't forget Michael Gardyne is doing well on loan at Ross County while 18-year-old Paul McGowan is a player of the season contender at Morton. I predict big things for Wee Gowser. For the Youths, Paul Cahillane and Kevin Cawley have taken turns partnering Cillian. Both are very clever players but neither has - as yet - shown signs of being a clinical finisher.

Plenty more reading in that link for those who are interested

Skysports.com understands Southend and Hull are chasing Motherwell striker Richie Foran.

Foran is weighing up his future at Motherwell with his current contract due to expire in the summer.

The news has alerted a number of clubs who are considering making moves for the Irishman.

Southend and Hull are both in the market for a new striker as they look to bring in a goalscorer to aid their survival bids in the Championship.

Foran's representative Clive Hart admitted several sides were keeping tabs on Foran's situation.

"There are one or two clubs who are having a look at Richie," Hart told skysports.com.

"His contract is up in the summer and he is weighing up his future.

"Motherwell have suggested they would like to talk over a new deal, but nothing has happened so far.

"Richie is not rushing into anything and he is keeping his options open."

Motherwell are loath to lose the talented forward but they could decide to cash in on Foran this month rather than risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

In the premier league fantasy football bonus points are awarded to the best 3 players in each match. Dunne has more bonus points than any other defender in the league. I think I heard he's also the only player in the league to have played every minute of every match but I don't know how true that is.

Byrne joins the Revolution
DAVID BECKHAM'S arrival into Major League Soccer last week may have captured countless headlines but there was another less-heralded MLS signing of interest to Irish football fans.

Bryan Byrne, 24, was one of a number of players drafted into US soccer's top league on Friday when he was snapped up by Steve Nicol's New England Revolution as 38th choice in the MLS Superdraft.

The Castledermot native played under Dermot Keely with Kildare County in 2002, before heading to the University of California-Santa Barbara.

colchester v leicester 1-1

seems McCarthy was hard done by for the equalising pen in this one, by a ref who in his first outing at this level seems to have has a really poor game.also trying to send a player off for a second yellow, without a first booking and several controversially disallowed goals.

HERE:

Laughable decision, slams City skipper

By Andy Mann

Paddy McCarthy described the penalty decision that deprived Leicester City of three points on their first visit to Colchester as "laughable".

With City leading by Iain Hume's 19th-minute goal, the City skipper was adjudged by referee Danny McDermid, who was in charge of his first Championship game, to have fouled Chris Iwelumo at the start of the second half.

A long ball was played into the City area and Colchester striker Iwelumo went to the ground with McCarthy close by.

There appeared minimal contact and there were even less appeals from the home players.

But McDermid, who later tried to dismiss Colchester captain Karl Duguid for a second yellow without having previously booked him, pointed to the spot.

McCarthy said: "I don't know what the penalty was given for.

"I have seen it again on the video, I think everybody in the stadium has seen it, and no-one knows what it's been given for.

"It summed up the performance of the referee.

"Their skipper said to me afterwards that the lad who went down was bemused by it. I think it's laughable really. I am lost for words and all you can do in this situation is laugh. But it's not funny because it's cost us."

He added: "The lads have done ever so well. It is a difficult place to come to at the best of times but when you have decisions like that, at a place where they have a terrific home record, it makes your job even harder."

McCarthy's view was echoed by both his own manager, Robert Kelly, and, to a lesser extent, by Geraint Williams, the Colchester boss.

Kelly said: "There was no contact and not one of their players has appealed for it.

"It was a pivotal moment.''

Kelly added: "It should be the players who decide the outcome.''

There were seven bookings in a game where there was not a bad tackle.

Williams had sympathy with City over the penalty.

"It looked a bit innocuous," he said. "The ball went into the box and Chris Iwelumo lost his footing. The referee has given it. I can understand why Leicester are disappointed."
