Treaty United the most likely upset?

Possibly an improving Galway against a stuttering and Euro-focused Rovers. Athlone v Waterford too maybe

I thought Cork v Sligo was tie of the round until I remembered this season was weird

LTFC get an emotional reunion with the legend that is Davy O'Sullivan who's currently knocking them in for Bangor.

Only one all-premier clash means that Drogs-Derry sis the tie of the round. The rest are pretty meh to be honest.

At least 4 non league teams in the last 16

This is the fourth time in seven years that Drogheda have drawn Derry in the Cup. Both sides would fancy their chances of winning the trophy, so it's a tie neither club would have wanted.

I can't see it myself Pineappler, Div1 is one thing for a well drilled, fairly basic but organised side, which we are but UCD played a bit of ball against us and won 3 2 from 0 2 down. Dundalk will play a bit of ball too. Most Div1 fixtures don't present this challenge.

Probably right, though I guess "most likely upset" is a relative term in a competition which tends to have fairly few upsets to start with.

Presuming that the games, if the clubs provide it, will be on LoI TV, but as a purchase?

Conor McCormack is suspended and there's a few injuries to key players like Hurley, O'Keefe and Brouder so I think Rovers will win easily enough. It's a pity because we've been playing really well recently and I would have liked to have seen our full team test themselves against a good Premier team.

First round is earlier than usual, isn't it? Never been in between Euro ties before that I recall. Probably won't do the non-league sides much good.

Few ex loi players playing in FAI Cup this weekend that used to play for us. Our all time top scorer Davy O'Sullivan whos now with Bangor GG, Conor Kenna whos now playing with Kilnamanagh and Dean Murphy whos with Liffey Wanderers. Wonder will there be any major shocks? Considering how poor Cobh are this season you have to fancy Liffey Wanderers!

This round of the cup surely needs to be looked at at this stage? I know it's nice for the junior clubs to get a day out but it makes for a pretty poor competition.

4 of the last 16 are going to be junior teams, which means that there may easily be another easy route to the latter stages for a club like Athlone/Wexford and we could have another 11-0 scenario. Which is a terrible look for what should be showcase events.

I don't think anything major needs to be adjusted. Something like the PDs top 6 qualify for next season's last 16, then the remaining 14 LOI clubs are joined by the 6 best Junior clubs in round 1.

Would there be any push back against this from any of the LOI clubs? Or is it the Junior clubs who would push back and not want this happening?

pineapple stu
23/07/2021, 2:08 PM
Well you could go back to having this round in August; I don't know why it changed.

Or of course the really sensible thing to do would be to align non-league and league seasons like in literally every other country in Europe.

The Covid-induced shutdown of amateur football would actually have been an opportunity to do this. If there's no football for several months anyway, why not align it once you restart? Of course that would have required a strong FAI pushing this through from the top, and that's why it hasn't happened.

If you want to avoid junior clubs playing each other in round 1 resulting in several of them progressing to round 2 or beyond, you could also address that by applying seeding in round 1. Have the junior clubs and the bottom FD clubs unseeded, and the PD and top FD clubs seeded. This way, the juniors still get their day out, while not too many of them make it to round 2.

We host Shels again in two weeks; could be a feisty one. Played much better than in recent weeks though

Very comfortable for Pats. Even had the luxury of resting Benson and Forrestor, took off Lee Desmond and gave a few of the teenagers a run, including a start for Ben McCormack who played well and scored a lovely goal. Just about as good as it gets really. I’m dreaming of the Aviva .............(for now anyway)

4-4 in Athlone after two goals in injury time in extra time, Athlone scoring from half way with the last kick apparently. Glenn McAuley debut hat trick. Both managers sent off also. GLITW.

Edit: Waterford take it on pens 4-2.

Yep it was his debut. McAuley's talent has always been there but he lets himself down a lot off in his attitude and off the pitch stuff which is why he’s at his 4th LOI club in 2 years since coming home from Liverpool. Hopefully he can get the head down and do well with Athlone

Audacious stuff in what sounded like a mental game. But I'd put the keeper at fault for that one. The ball was never actually that high, and he should have done better when he got his hand to it.

Personally speaking Bircham should of pulled the team when Wordsworth was sent off anyway. Up there with one of the worst decisions in the leagues history!

You can't go pulling a team off the pitch for a bad refereeing decision FFS.

And technically he did kick the ball away after the whistle had been blown, so while it was petty from the ref and an awful call from the lino to give a throw, the ref was within his rights to give a yellow so it can hardly be the worst decision ever

I’d say something if it was a one off ‘mistake’ but he later sent the manager off for harmlessly celebrating a last minute equaliser. Not to mention the fact the player has to serve a ban because a referee was incompetent and quite clearly got it wrong. On top of that we very nearly ended up losing the game because of that decision. Quite often players kick the ball away after the whistle has been blown without punishment, so I’m not buying into the ref was following the rule sh*t, because if he was following the rules he’d of never blown the whistle in the first place...

Irregardless the only consistency with match officials in this country is they’re nearly all equally as bad as each other every other week for every team. It’s more common to hear of a ref walking away from a game being criticised then being commended for a good game.

How can we expect people to take the league seriously if the referees are consistently bad?

The fact the player still has to serve a ban for that is a farce is itself..:.

I'd hazard a guess that the 3 goals you let in might have played a bigger role in that.

Make a complaint, Waterford are good at that!

Consistently bad for every team is a bit of a leveler no matter how frustrating.

Drogheda lose on pens to Derry after having two men (and manager Tim Clancy) sent off. The usual misery for Drogs v Derry in the cup. (Four losses since 2015). Unbearable.
