Was gonna post in jest last night about Dunney heading up to Celtic on Loan - I just couldnt be arsed, but I guess we all knew it would be a matter of minutes before the various rumour mill websites were stating it.

the only thing blocking this move is the fact that robbie keane might decide to go to wolves, and i believe you're only allowed to sign one player on loan from another premiership club

I think Wolves need a defender of Dunne's calibre more than they need an attacker, but I think the big problem with getting both in would be money, not rules. Even if the premier league does allow them both to come in on loan, Mick probably wouldn't be given 120,000 pounds a week to pay their wages.

Dunne (and Stevie Mancface) have Villa futures sez Houllier. (http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/65158.html?CMP=OTC-RSS)

Well, considering they're losing with those guys out of the team there isn't much of a defence to keep them in the wilderness. He might just be saying they have a future though so their values don't totally plummet.

There's a better return if you're selling a perceived asset rather than a liability...

I wonder if he really thinks Dunne has improved or he just realises the defence has gotten even worse without him.

I think Dunnes missing the influence of St Ledger nursing and playing alongside him.

After all good CB pairings each have differant styles of play that compliment each other.

I suspect this is just a journalist flying a kite but the Daily Mail today suggests that Arsenal have made an enquiry about Richard Dunne. They are short of options at the back so it would make sense through the end of the season. I'm sure Wenger would prefer to have a homegrown option available but as they are still in contention he might make a move to bolster his resources.

Arsenal are short leadership and physicality at the back and have been since Campbell was at his peak, and Adams & Keown. Gallas was decent but deeply unpopular.

I said last year that Dunne would be a good buy - given Arsenal's unwillingness to pay up. He's a better player than Squillaci and would complement Koscielny. Vermaelen is badly missed. There are much better CBs around but I think he'd be a square peg in a square hole for the near term. Last year was a better time for that move though.

I'm not sure I'd play Dunne against Barcelona though!

SwanVsDalton
19/01/2011, 6:30 PM
Would be some move given this has probably been on of his worst season's in the top flight. His confidence is looking a bit better though, and a move to Arsenal should be all the motivation he needs to recapture his Dunney Monstering best.

Not sure what 'Richard Dunne' you were watching (maybe you were staring at a box of Sugar Puffs) but he was largely brilliant last year. As his fellow professionals agreed. For someone so 'clumsy' he's done well to have such a long, highly respectable career at the highest level..

I'm a Villa fan. So I know the following:

1) Richard Dunne was brilliant last season and hasn't been great this year, his form compounded by the general mess that has been Villa's back four, not to mention some disastrous mismanagement from Houllier. Excepting last night, however, his form has improved quite a bit. He's been much better than Collins and would benefit from having Cuellar beside him.

2) The majority of Villa fans are clueless muppets.

Hmm maybe not so bad. 3 weeks is just about doable. Trap will probably call him up and leave it down to the wire.

Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne will be out of action for up to a month with a shoulder problem, the club have confirmed.
Dunne suffered the setback during Villa's 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup on Wednesday.
Villa boss Gerard Houllier confirmed: "Unfortunately, we're going to lose Richard Dune for three to four weeks with a shoulder problem.
"The good thing is, we haven't got many games during that period."

year before last he'd still have been with City. Interesting stat I heard - new years day 2009 (his last NYD at City) City had conceded just 10 goals away while Villa had conceded 27. If Dunne is out I'd go for:

Foley-JOS-SSL-Kilbane

Kilbane for the experience & leadership, as noted above.

I think Trap rates Kelly over Foley though. Foley just shades it over Coleman for me because he's a defender first & foremost.

I thought you said he played well the other night?

The last few back fours look awful dodgy to say the least. But we cant do anything about it. Its almost 4 weeks away, Im confident dunney will be fit if houllier lets him go.

I get excited when i think about the players we have, then when one player like this is out, i think we are in dire straits.

The only plus is that its the home game they are out for and not the away game.

He did play well the other night - post you've quoted is from over a month ago.

Bit of a disaster - three of our 'big four' possibly gone. Definitely hope Duff is wrapped in cotton wool now. As has been mentioned, there's still a good chance he'll play. Dunney Monster has regularly played through the pain barrier and if he's anywhere near fit he'll be itching for the game and Trap will probably start him.

That's why I mentioned it -because it was odd. I'm trying to recall where I came across that stat but it stuck in the mind exactly because it was odd to the point of remarkable. I think it was Off the Ball or Lawro on the Last Word. What happens if you calculate just on games Dunne appeared in I wonder? (though that'll be most of them anyway I imagine).

Dunne and Collins apologise for something that happened during the week at Villa.

Aston Villa defenders James Collins and Richard Dunne have issued apologies after clashing with the club's coaching staff.

The News of the World reported that the pair were critical of some of manager Gerard Houllier's coaching staff during a team break at a Spa in Leicestershire.

"I apologise unreservedly for my behaviour on Wednesday night. It was not acceptable and I am genuinely sorry," Dunne told the newspaper.

Collins added: "We were wrong. This should not have happened and I apologise for the part I played."

The club are now due to launch a review of the incident, with a spokesman adding: "We have launched an investigation in line with our internal disciplinary procedures."

Villa are a shambles under Houllier. The mans a clown

I'm not clear why you would blame Houlier for this!

“Two players who were p*****d up had, let’s say, a frank exchange of views,” said a source. “There was an open bar which had been agreed by Gerard Houllier.

“They launched a stinging attack on the backroom boys. There was a disagreement with members of the coaching staff and both players have had to apologise.”

It is not the first time that Dunne has landed in hot water for his views on tactics. Last year he launched an expletive-ridden rant at assistant manager Gary McAllister on the training pitch. He was dropped from the side, and later apologised.

Manager Gerard Houllier is thought to be dismayed at the players’ antics after a season in which his side have struggled in both league and cup competitions.

The excursion had been organised to boost club morale after a difficult season that has been fraught with tension. The players took part in a paintballing exercise during the day but in the evening things threatened to get out of hand when, after dinner and out of sight of the public, a heated row broke out"

Its on the BBC gossip page today that his days at Villa are numbered. And with Houllier having been backed to the tune of 18 million for Bent, it looks like they are going to give him some time to put his own stamp on things there. Enough time to get rid of Dunne anyway.

This story is getting serious traction in The Sun (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3464731/Dunne-and-Co-in-crisis-meeting-at-Aston-Villa.html) and Mirror (http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Aston-Villa-want-to-hit-Richard-Dunne-and-James-Collins-with-unprecedented-fines-following-drunken-row-with-coaching-staff-article713528.html).

Believe what they say and it sounds incredibly serious - Dunne so drunk he can't remember saying anything, although he allegedly made disparaging remarks about Houllier, the coaches and Fabian Delph. Villa seeking to fine the players 4-6 weeks wages and telling them to bring a lawyer to a meeting on Wednesday.
