Who would you credit the organisational skills of the Everton back 4 to last season if not Lescott....Jagielka, Yobo?
I actually thought Jagielka was the main man for Everton last season, he was brilliant

Me too but I would have considered Lescott a decent organiser also. He's only finding his feet at City.

David Moyes?
I mean didn't he play 4-1-4-1 with Carsley infront of the defense making it hard to break down?

Carsley wasn't even there last season. Anyway we were talking about on pitch organisers, obviously Moyes would be credited with setting them up right in the first place.

Lescott is an average player with a huge ego. He definitely isn't worth the money that was paid for him. I rate Dunne much higher, but that doesn't matter.

I'd probably credit Everton's defence to Howard last season to be honest, he was on awesome form.

Yes no doubt you are right on that but I expect he plays the same defense minded system, I am not sure who plays the '1' but they still play a 4-1-4-1 I believe which should make it easier for the defense overall.
I'm not sure who plays the '1' though as I don't follow them much.

There was a funny entry in the "Live Football Updates" on BBC online on Tuesday, asking was it unkind to point out that Everton have scored 12 and conceded none since Phil Neville got injured! I thought it was funny in context of the Dunne v Lescott remarks above.

Just saw Dunne's handball that led to the penalty that cost Villa a point.
It's worrying that he's throwing in these clangers far too often.

Looked liked a peno to me, there was no reason why he should have had his hand sticking out like that.

funny, if hed stuck his head in there he would have prob won the freekick for dangerous play.

A lot of referees would have given a free out for dangerous play. You can't blame for putting his hand up if someone's boot is inches from his head. Very harsh peno.

Jagielka to a lesser extent, but I think having Phil Neville in front of the defence was a key factor. I also think adding Fellaini to the team was a smart move. Fellaini and Cahill are full of stamina and their runs and the sheer ground they covered on the pitch freed up Neville to concentrate of fixing the defensive areas of the team.

Well if you want to stop an almost certain goal there is :D
Anyhow it looked like he was trying to keep his balance to me, I think your arm
tends to go up when you stick a leg up high.
If you look at the guy doing the overhead kick his arm is up
in pretty much the same position, so it seems like the natural think to do in that situation.
So rather harsh on Dunne I think, you have to put your hand somewhere so I'd say it is accidental.

Most pundits were of the view it was not a a peno.
It was fired towards him from close range but his hands shouldn't have been up in the air like that. Think the ref probably got it right but it was unlucky enough from Villa's point of view. He was always likely to give it after sending off Grella.

If a guy had done that against Ireland I'd have been screaming for a penno. Not deliberate but careless, not to mention a bit unlucky. He didn't do too well for the first goal either. He got muscled out a bit after letting a high ball bounce. It reminded me a bit of Henry's goal in Dublin where he let the ball bounce instead of attacking it.

Think it was just a natural reaction to put his arm/hands up to protect his face. Have to agree shouldn't have had them up though harsh enough considering how close he was to the player striking the ball.

I know, it was a tough enough one alright. I think Stutts put it well when he said he would have been screaming for a penalty if it was Ireland. I would have been angry if we didn't get it in that situation, more so than if it was given against us.

Had his hand been at his side and had the guy blasted the ball against his hand, a penalty would have been given as well.
Of course had he been lolloing around out of position and not making a challange people would be saying he was not at fault at all for the goal.
Anyhow would we be praising him if the ball had been volley over his head into the back of the net. It was at almost point blank range, closer than the penalty spot, I don't think the keeper would have saved it, he's not Shay given you know ;)

FFS it was a peno and he was at fault for the 1st goal.
All that nonsense in the last page and a half of this thread. If you didn't know him you'd swear he was the new Beckenbauer the way he held the city and Villa defences together singlehandedly this season

I think it was a penalty as well and definitely if it was for my team.
Mind you I believe most(or a lot) of penalties are for accidental hand ball anyway. A lot of time players would be unable to remove their hand because they just would not have the time to.

Found this - Richard Dunne is the 13th best performing player in the World Cup European Qualifiers, according to the Castrol Index:

Nice parting message to to Mark Hughs, did get some applause from the City fans though.
No chance of Given saving it.

BBC website says Ireland came on as sub and was very influential.
A guy texted BBC website saying Richard Dunne never has an average game, he's either a heroic MOTM or own goal red carded shocker. He has a point!
Same website suggests City's 2 CBs really struggled in the air and Dunne had more than one headed chance.

I was going to start a seperate thread but I'll piggyback here instead.
I just want to say what a class act Richard Dunne is for his reaction to scoring against his old club tonight.
And not just Richie, but Tevez for his goal celebrations against West Ham last week and even Ronaldo (bless him) was apologetic to Sporting Lisbon fans when he scored against them in the champions league.
Say what you like about him, that was a nice touch and him, Tevez, Dunne and the likes know what side their bread is buttered on and that their position as professionals is a privilege and not a right. They show respect to the clubs that gave them so much to begin with and only show Adebayor up as the muppet he is and that he would be rotting in France or some other crap league if it wasn't for Arsenal.
Does anyone remember Denis Law's reaction when he sent Man U down to the old second division scoring for City? Class Act.

FYI the Mancs were already down when Law scored that goal.

True, it wasn't his goal that sent them down but at least he didn't run the length of the pitch to make a tool of himself.

ha ha it really is ironic, if that's the correct word, Dunne beats the duff central defenders Hughs forked out millions for.
On Sky Sports:-
£25 million Lescott awarded a 5
£6 Dunne awarded a 9.

that's 3 of the last 6 goals conceded by City that were headers, plus two free headers Berbatov stuck straight at Shay Given.

fair paly to him as has beensaid lets for more of the same from him in the Green jersey...slightly off topic but £25 million for Lescott has to be the most ridiculous transfer fee ever in a sport of crazy transfer fees!!

Was delighted to see Dunnie play so well, and that lack of celebration was another touch of class from the gentle giant,Defo the best centre back on the pitch last night and is shoulders above that lescott. Although dunnies distribution wasn’t great he knew it, lescott actually thinks he can play ball which is quite a travesty.
However having watched almost every city match in the last 2 years I do think he was alot more motivated as i honestly cant remember the last time he attacked a corner like that for us. Hopefully he will carry form/confidence into Saturday and slam one past the Italians

We need him firing on all cylinders for the two forthcoming games and the play-offs (if we get to them).

MOTM performance, no question. made some great interceptions and challenges, scroed a great header and was very close with another.
When interviewed after the game he was asked "so will you be having a drink with your former team mates tonight?" to which the honeymonster replied..."eh No. International duty now" Very professional sounding and focused, a changed man from 5 or 6 years ago.

Dunne was woefully underutilised from set pieces at City IMO. In contrast, O'Neills teams have been bouncing balls off imposing centre halves since he was at Leicester (and probably Wycombe before that). Elliott, Mjallby and Laursen all both benefited from this tactic
