It was an absolute worldly that's for sure. If it was scored in England it would be talked about for years. Bring on the semis
Just seen it there. Incredible technique. Paul Scholes scored a similar type of goal a few years ago and people still talk about it.

Some crackers scored in the LOI (and cup) this season. Comparable with any league.

I would have put Derry ahaead of Cork if in the Cup Final in relation to potential attendance. 17,000 last year were from Derry!
Oh don't worry, we have a bandwagon like no other. It just needs to be dusted off!

Great goal, but am I the only one that thought it came off his shin?
It couldn't have though I suppose, with the power of the shot.

BS! The 2012 final there were certainly a lot more Derry fans than Pats but not last year, it was almost 50-50.
Will it not go to extra time and maybe penalties
Not unless something's changed this season. Last season's Derry-ShamR semi went to a replay. Loads of the semis have gone to replays in recent years
one replay for semis, and that can go to extra time/penalties
No replay for the final

Just glad Cork and Dundalk were kept apart for the semis. The first final at the new Aviva was 36,000 and that between two well supported sides and the novelty of it. Cork-Dundalk has the potential to match that crowd.
I can see Bray bringing a decent support if they get the final, a short easy run up to the Aviva.
But Longford would really, really struggle.
If there's one thing that brings the people of Longford out its an FAI cup final. The county was deserted in 03 and 04 and if I remember correctly we brought more in 07 than cork did

We'd bring anywhere from 5-8k I'd wager, judging by all of our past finals. If half of those people are still alive/living in the country, of course.

Goal of the season or what................ .......at least in the League of Ireland any way!
One of those goals where you can say, well I was there. :o

Funny you should say that because 38 was Dundalk average attendance pre 2014 ;)
and all 38 are still being treated for PTSD!:p

I was expecting that Gaynor goal to be a lot better the way people were going on about it. Great strike obviously but was expecting the greatest goal ever scored.

Cork fans over-hyping? Surely not. The biggest club in Ireland, don't you know.

It was a great strike but there have been some great ones this season. Towell's volley against Galway is still the standout.

Good strike, but I thought the same, was expecting it to be a lot better, also thought the Wexford player (Dunne?) was possibly better considering the conditions were so much worse.

That was the original plan but that Sunday has Liverppol/Everton (1.30), Man U/Arsenal (4.00) and rugby Ireland/Italy (16.45).
Madness to try and compete with all that.

Although we're not the self-proclaimed best team the league has seen in 20 years even though we got knocked out of Europe in the first round :)

From a neutrals point of view I think this Dundalk team is one of the best we've seen in years and has the potential to go on and be one of the great LOI teams. A real European run will help cement that and to be fair they weren't far away this year from one

Well with all the champions and European money on the way there'll hopefully be some improvement soon. That'll be a problem for Cork fans though as you'll have to come up with a new excuse not to visit!

I know the stadium ownership is a bit of a mess so its not all down to Dundalk. We'd love to come up more often but its a long way to travel for what's on offer. You'd be taking your life in your hands in that away section

I won't argue with you on the state of the away section because it is awful alright. As you say the lease ownership is a mess at the moment, but even if that gets sorted we don't know how much will be done and in what order. It certainly won't be a case of we have the lease now lets build a load of new stands, that's not feasible unfortunately. European money will only stretch so far and I presume the club will want to stay successful on the field during any upgrade process.

This Dundalk squad is close to being the best side I've seen in the league in a long long time. Jake Keegan's goal at the end of a 27-pass move against Longford is the standout goal for me this season, just edging Towell's volley agains ourselves. It was similar to the 36-pass goal for Dundalk against Pats recently, but we just got the job done quicker. Soccer Republic, being the wonderful show it is, only included about 4 passes in the build-up to the goal, and never mentioned the extended move for the goal so unless you saw it on the night, you might not be aware of it

Gannon's goal? I was impressed to see Galway fans standing up to applaud that goal. Applauding an opponents goal is not a frequent sight in the LOI.

Both Towell's volley and Gannon's screamer were quality strikes but from an aesthetic point of view, I will argue that the 27-pass move leading to Keegan's third goal against Longford topped both

Unfortunately, Soccer Republic deprived me from seeing the move leading to Keegan's goal. He got four passes shown? Gannon only got three shown for his. You would think they would want to highlight the lovely passing football that LOI clubs are capable of.

From the League of Ireland & Dundalk's point of view its very important that Dundalk get a long lease on Oriel so that vital work can be done.
Success on the field may not last forever & it would be nice to have something to show for it beside just memories.
I presume that the wages for the likes of Towell, Horgan & some of the others is down to sponsorship & not based on gate receipts alone ?
One of the problems with the away section is the inability to see all of the pitch. It would be far better to have the away section behind one of the goals.
You wouldn't need new stands just some terracing behind one of the goals & a bit of a tin roof on it for starters. It doesn't even have to go all the way across.
It could always be improved later as funds become available.

Few, if any, clubs base their budget and expenditure on gate receipts alone.
Of course some just pluck numbers out of their arse........

One of our lads broke the goal down at crucial moments with screenshots and the positioning of Gannon and Rossiter was hilarious to say the least. Gannon was 5 yards away from any meaningful action at all times and as a result Rossiter flew out to try and intercept the ball which left Rhys 1 V 1 for the cross and the Galway man just tapped in. We made it so so easy for them

Whats the story with tickets for the semi's? I see Bray released an update yesterday and are expecting a sell out which would be amazing! Will many from Cork travel to Bray?

Hard to tell. Everyone seems delighted its on the Friday which might help the crowd.
Say 4,000 would be pushing it.
How much does Brays ground hold? Will be great to see it full

Read or heard Bray or Health & Safety issues are limiting capacity to 3,000 for the Carlisle, than again that could be just the seating as I think the tent stand holds about 1,000 and the opposite open seating holds about 2,000.
If its a good dry day and Cork bring a big away following, there could be a problem there...........hopefully from an attendance point of view.

Yeah i heard 3000 was the total but seemingly they are trying to increase it, maybe temporary stand behind the goal. Would be great to get that in for the game if it is a sell out! Seems to be loads of interest around the town for it!
