I don't really get you. Are you saying that he should have committed further and run the risk of Morission getting past him and opening up and even more dangerous situation? Or are you just saying he should have closed his legs? 9/10 a corner (or block of some description) would result from the approach McCarthy took, it was just a bit freakish that it went straight through his legs.

I think he midjudged it, held off/back, didnt go in properly and had he it wouldnt have gone through his legs. I think his attitude and half-hearted attempt resulted in this. He didn't close him down enough basically, he gave him too much space and time to get it through his legs.

The only way you could criticise McCarthy for that goal is if you were actively searching for something to criticise.

Goals happen most often because of something going wrong defensively whether thats someone not doing their job properly, a blunder, a defensive lap or whatever. Whats important with defensive mistakes is the end product, does it end in a goal, if it does you look at what goes wrong or what could have affected the outcome. McCarthy could have pushed him out and kept tighter so he couldnt get the cross in, there is no defending it(albeit a tad unlukcy but as they say you make your own luck), a goal resulted.

All goals are avoidable in hindsight. Sometimes people just score good goals. Even bad ones. Not every goal needs to be surgically dissected.

The difference is that you call it a mistake, I call it bad luck. If the ball takes a deflection, I don't blame the goalkeeper for not anticipating it.

I pm'd you my imaginary friends details
Okay, you sent me a pm about the email details of an imaginary friend from Liverpool, who could just be a real person - still a doubtful scenario. Wtf am I supposed to do with that? You ask me to meet up with him?
Okay, I'll book a transatlantic flight next week and 3 nights in a hotel somewhere in England. What alternate universe are you residing on?
All that effort, money and travel just to meet your friend, who supposedly will inform me personally of the delights of Croxteth :)
The very same one who doesn't even know the Rooneys' local pub in Croxteth and makes a false claim to that effect? or was that just you going out on our own reconnissance and falling flat on your ear? :) Perhaps you are two peas from same pod.

Just proving its not an imaginary friend, and also a smack of realism would be good for you to come out of your fantasist internet existence where you fabricate responses without having a clue about what your talking about, just something you read on some other internet site to back up your fragile argument(s) :D
I dont think a deflection off something you know nothing about and the example last night are one and the same and therefore cannot be compared in the same context. A goalkeeper cant anticpate a deflection,it could go anywhere, over his head to his left, to his right, it could go before him out into the crowd. There was only one place that ball was going last night, the winger wasnt going to kick it out or blast it behind him, it was only going in one direction, and McCarthy was the only obstacle interfering in that line.
Can Scousers be truculent?
Argumentative and hostile perhaps...
Calm down, calm down.

Delusion defined Paul. You claim authority on a matter by denigrating Granny Rooney's account and spout nonsense about their local pub. When countered with facts, you back yourself up with contradictions and retreat into some persistent state of obfuscation where no thread remains to what constitutes coherent reasoning. When all is lost then you try to denigrate me. I am quite familiar with Liverpool and absolutely sure you haven't a clue about the Rooneys and their place in Croxteth.

I had to look up "obfuscation" because, ironically enough, I was bewildered and confused.

As the article says, he's the son of former Bohs and Athlone player Alan Kinsella, who was a physio at Rovers for a while after he retired. I always thought Mark Kinsella was from around Templeogue as well but I don't think he's any relation.

Think his Templeogue colleague Conor Davis had a trial with Everton and was over a few times as well. Good to see.

That made me laugh.
It reminded me of this:
"Teddy McCarthy to Mick McCarthy, no relation, Mick McCarthy back to Teddy McCarthy, still no relation."

Himself and Osman weren't that bad when they came on. McGeady had one Coutinho-like pass.

TOWK, Posh probably saw that and chose to ignore it. Doesn't fit in with the anti-McGeady narrative.

So he does one good thing bs and then that counteracts all the negative things.
I'll still reserve judgement on him for now.

29/01/2014, 12:38 AM
No. But you shouldn't always concentrate on the negative. I saw his ****ty cross that never made it past the first man which is what we always complain about but I realise he isn't match fit so I let him away.
Given how awful Everton were tonight it just shows how unfit he is that Martinez only put him in for a short period.

All the negative things? - he was on for 10 minutes... did a couple of tidy things (retaining possession in tight situtations) and one very classy bit of play that opened Liverpool up. He also had a couple of not so great moments, one of which was an unlucky ricoshade which went out for a goal kick instead of a corner.
I'll still reserve judgement on him for now.
Maybe he'll win you over in his next ten minute cameo

An actual worry about last night from an Irish perspective, was the ease in which Liverpool opened Everton up. McCarthy and Barry were bypassed with ease and just couldn't cope with Liverpool's pace, granted there were some individual errors which put them on the back foot. Just something to be slightly wary of if Gibson and Mac playing those holding roles is the future for us, as Gibson isn't really any more mobile than Barry. To be fair though it probably was just one of those nights for Everton, when everything went wrong. Distin and Coleman would have added an awful lot to that back four as well.

The Guardian gave him man of the match against Stevenage, saying he had a lot of class but that the EPL would obviously be harder. I'll look for the link later.

I watched the 10 minutes he was on and thought he was OK, made one classy pass in particular
and one of his passes was cut out but that was on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area so no
great surprise, You have to remember they lost 4-0 and Liverpool didn't score when he was on.
He can hardly be blamed for the defeat.
paul_oshea
30/01/2014, 10:26 AM
I wasn't blaming him for the defeat.
Ya i'd agree about mccarthy he was caught out very badly for one of the goals but a few instances where he just got caught for pace. I think this has always been an issue with him, never the quickest, perhaps he can overcome this by smarter positioning. I still don't see the hype yet though, far too inconsistent in the performances i have seen. Some good, the odd very good and the rest average.
Stuttgart88
30/01/2014, 12:43 PM
Actually, McCarthy has won me over this season. I thought he was talked up beyond what he was delivering but I think he's one of these quietly effective players who helps secure midfield for more attacking players. He's done well this season. I'm not sure I'd call the praise he's getting "hype".
Good + very good + average = better than average
paul_oshea
30/01/2014, 3:24 PM
I said the rest meaning the majority were average, not quite the same as dividing by 3 across total ratings.
I think he has shown himself this season to be a decent top 10/mid table midfielder thus far. Nothing less nothing more. Which isn't to be sniffed at, but the way he was talked up, not necessarily here but he was going to be a big thing like top 3/4 quality. I mean the fact that Everton fans were fawning at the 13 mil spent for a player who few had been particularly aware of or less stick in the mind. He had hardly made that big an impact in the premiership to warrant the move at least in their minds - and I'd say you could have swapped that for any other team in the PL. The Everton rumours aside who else actually was interested? Had martinez not been appointed to Everton he would more than likely be playing in the Championship. Thats not the place for a player bigged up as much as he was.
Charlie Darwin
30/01/2014, 3:28 PM
Paul, just stop now before you say anything else you haven't bothered researching.
paul_oshea
30/01/2014, 3:29 PM
No i watched the games i dont need to do research like ye on here to back up your points, I get them first hand. Based on my assessment of him in those games I gave my opinion.
Charlie Darwin
30/01/2014, 3:37 PM
And your opinion that he'd be playing in the Championship if Everton hadn't come in for him? In spite of the fact he's clearly demonstrated his worth already and the fact there were a few teams trailing him but were never likely to beat Martinez.
paul_oshea
30/01/2014, 3:39 PM
We often hear this trailing, transfer rumours charlie, which bit do you understand and which bit do you not? We hear loads of these and most are untrue. McMenamen was very good as was maloney towards the end of the season...they still ended up there.
Charlie Darwin
30/01/2014, 4:34 PM
Maloney is a journeyman and McManaman had a good few weeks. McCarthy is and was a class above. You can't just dismiss transfer rumours just because it suits you.
paul_oshea
30/01/2014, 7:27 PM
Youre right we can't but we almost always do on here until it actually happens.because we've learnt from experience that 90%-I didn't research this, before you throw out some silly line, its an expression- of the time nothing comes of it.
Charlie Darwin
30/01/2014, 9:18 PM
It was very well-documented that Newcastle were interested. If he hadn't been able to get a move before the deadline (due to nothing else but Wigan's high valuation of him), he'd have made his move in January.

A trip to the Emirates is much more favourable, at least, as it will be only a couple if days before Arsenal's return leg in Munich and a subsequent run of very difficult fixtures for the Gunners. Still a big ask but if they could bring them back to Goodison I'd nearly fancy them.

Fairly robbed there. McCarthy excellent defensively. Really kept Hazard out of the game. McGeady came on with over ten minutes left and was very good. Some great work defensively, including one really excellent tackle. Took a ball out of the sky at one stage with a lovely touch. Used the ball well and put in one really dangerous ball with his left foot from the right hand side. Coleman was sound defensively but unusually poor in possession, a couple of very sloppy passes and lost possession four or five times under no huge pressure.
