I used to be like you and needed to see "evidence" of Paul's premonitions. You'll learn not to doubt in future.

Sods law says if he had been defending a similar ball he would have put it in the back of the net. :)

Coleman and McCarthy both came off the bench last night. McCarthy could have been braver for De Bruyne's cross that set up the winner. He did a bit of a John O'Shea and turned his arse on it, making himself as small as possible. I'd happily take a smack of a ball in the face to have a cup final at Wembley to look forward to.
Edit- I just seen it again and it's even worse than I remember (https://youtu.be/G-ydOnna12k?t=3m24s), he practically got out of the way of it. He also did that silly 'hands behind his back' thing, which was even more unnecessary than usual as he wasn't even in the penalty box.

Not very impressive really, you should really be trying to charge down the ball.
Mind you, that is less than half the story, what about £30 million pound defender John Stones?
Free header for Aguero, surely he can't let him get in front of him like that? He is not much use
standing behind him there, might as well not be on the pitch.
Indeed he is worth £50 million now apparently!!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3419972/All-eyes-Everton-s-John-Stones-tricky-weeks-50m-rated-man-Blues-just-defend.htmlHe
He has done McCarthy a favour actually as he is not even mentioned in the article.
Complimentary of Coleman though!!
This was a horrible night for Everton's defenders, brutally exposed by one of the most feared strikers in world football when Sergio Aguero lost John Stones in the 76th minute. He is still looking for him.
The Everton defender, shuffled out to right back to accommodate captain Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori, was caught napping when Aguero scored City's third with his head.
'They've got a problem with John Stones at right back,' claimed Sky analyst Jamie Redknapp. 'He's not a right back.
You've got Seamus Coleman who's a better right back than him and Stones has got to go and play centre back.' Aguero put this tie to bed and the countless replays will be a reminder that Stones, right back or centre back, must put his nut in where it hurts to keep the ball out of that net.Martinez responded by substituting him, sending for Coleman in a desperate attempt to take this tie into extra-time. It was never going to happen.

Aguero tends to lose a lot better and more experienced defenders than Stones. He's getting a hard time lately but that just goes with poor results. He's still only a kid, learning to swim at the deep end, build them up to knock them down is the English way.
Yeah I'm glad McCarthy is getting a bit of a free ride but it was disappointing to see from our point of view, not his usual style to be fair. This (https://youtu.be/G-ydOnna12k?t=4m48s) was much higher on the commitment scale from himself and Baines a short time later.

Well Obviously Man City paid big buck for Aguero for a reason one being his ability to lose defenders.
Actually you only just see it at the start of the clips where Aguero nips inside him, would need to
seem from a bit earlier though.
Maybe he could say in his defence he was expecting McCarty to block the cross!
I do think he was built up too much though I have not see too much too impress me although I don't particularly look out for him.
Pretty much all I can remember is errors!
But anyway it was a great cross and a great header and not too impressive defending on that occasion.
DeLorean

I think Stones is a big talent to be honest. It probably doesn't help him that he's playing for a manager who focusses on the other side of the game more, and that Jagielka has been injured so much. Very little continuity. Perhaps he should be used more sparingly anyway? Obviously the price tag is insane but that's not his fault/problem. It usually takes centre backs until their mid-20's at the earliest to really find their feet and establish themselves. Chris Smalling, for example, has been around a long time at this stage but is only now he's really starting to look the part.

Our contingent will have a new manager (http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/36273695) this summer. It will be interesting to see who they appoint. Probably best to spare Martinez a hostile send off at Goodison on Sunday.
Three years left on his £4m a year contract... he'll be okay. :)

Wonder what the outlook will be for the Irish lads?
Depends who they get in I guess.
Frank de Boer is about evens fav
Then Ronald Koeman at about 2-1
Martin O Neill 25-1 ish :)
Roy Keane 66-1
Chris Hughton 66-1 :ball:

It will be interesting for McCarthy in particular I think. He's known nothing but Martinez since leaving Hamilton really at club level, bar a couple of weeks at Wigan. He's been a bit of a manager's pet under Martinez so might have to come out of his comfort zone a bit. Could be a good thing. A potential lifeline for Gibson, in particular, and maybe even McGeady too, doubtful though.

All papers saying Koeman top target this morning. A shame because (a) Long will continue to flourish under Koeman and (b) I want Koeman to take over at Arsenal!

Well let's face it the players, like Everton were going nowhere under Martinez so hopefully a chance for the better,
unless they will be going to different club!
I must say Martinez always seemed rather uninspiring in his TV interviews.

Go back to his thread or Wigan when I pointed out Derby defeats and massive problems with his defensive structure.he took a really sound defensive unit and completely ruined them. If he'd only listened or read his forum back then he mightn't be in the position he is :D
It was the same rhetoric over and over and it became a bit hollow after a while from him. I feel a bit sorry for him cos he seems like a nice guy.

Paul, you do realise the whole world knows that he's a very attack minded manager and therefore his Achille's Heel has generally been his team's defensive problems. He had a brilliant first season at Everton, of course he was going to be given credit for that at the time. I'm all for you arrogantly patting yourself on the back if you make some shrude observation that was a long way short of common knowledge, but come on....:)

I can honestly say I heard Paul discuss this at a public Q&A forum with some well known football figures and the consensus was that Paul's question was the best. Not only that but it was the most articulately presented question of the day.
McCarthys goal was a peach.

Great strike by McCarthy but he was allowed to waltz forward and nobody really picked him up.
The Norwich defence seems to be all over the place, nobody marked up, no surprise they are going down.
Great strike, but it was basically a free hit, doubt he will get too many of those in the Euro's

Google search does kinda work, this isnt the post i was looking for as its only from 3/4 years ago. There was one from around 2011 I think where i went through about spurs and chelsea hammering them but i can't find it, and went through all martinez stats and how poor they were defensively.
I think Martinez got them playing the way he wanted(and has done the same at Everton but inherited a better Defence), but a poor defensive record created mixed results, he lacked 1 or 2 players that perhaps would have given them a defensive solidity that seemed to be lacking, I do remember some big drubbings at Chelsea and spurs, i also think they condeded nearly 80 goals one season and something like 70 another. I remember Martinez complaining about defenders all getting injured around the same time especially the season they got relegated. I reckon had they a solid Defence they would always have acheived around mid to mid-lower table, perhaps that was Martinez' flaw, he was more focused on the playing side of the game, than being solid defensively.

...and a fairly regular goal scorer also. Will hopefully get a contract extension this summer and the opportunity to prove himself in first team football next season either for Everton or on in a loan move. Also congrats to U-21 International Courtney Duffus who was also a regular in the team, albeit often off the bench, and pitched in with a few goals and to potential international Mateusz Hewelt

I believe Tyrone Duffus (Courtney's younger brother) was also called into the squad a few times although didn't make any appearances. Sam Byrne, who recently made his comeback from that awful leg break, also is listed in the squad with a few appearances. Will be very interesting to see if Byrne comes back the same as he was before.
When I was reviewing the squad yesterday, it was interesting in that Courtney had a Jamaican and English flag beside his name and Tyrone had an Irish and English flag beside his (on the site I was referring to - transfermarkt I think - every other source I have checked since has him down with an Irish flag). I knew there was a Duffus at Everton that played for us but thought that it must have just been Tyrone and chuckled at the coincidence of two people with the Duffus surname being on the same youth team and not related. Doh! Turns out I'm the bigger Doofus.
