I know that because I attended a first division game almost every week and spoke to most of the clubs' mentors. It is not a sweeping statement. It is a known fact.
There is a huge difference between club mentors expressing concerns about whether they could survive in the Premier League and teams deliberately not doing their best in games to avoid winning (i.e. cheating). I don't know what you are suggesting. If it is the latter produce some evidence i.e. results from the First Division over the past season that would be considered 'surprises/upsets'.

Will the management at Borris take the club down the same road it has done previously with other clubs ie Kilkenny,Cashel, Villa, success will come but at what long term price to the club? Will many local players make the cut, as the team that won the 1st division will not win the premier league, so new faces are a certainty. Should be interesting tug of war for players from Villa and Cashel. If Celtic make a few key signings I believe they can at last win the league. Michaels inability to win the league over the past years must hurt.... I would like to wish them the best of luck in FAI final, I hope they grab the opportunity with both hands.

[QUOTE=the wombat;1487428]maybe it will be but at least they will try. believe me their manager has no intention of making up the numbers and i expect quite a few new faces out there for pre season[/QUO
Well it would be great for the league if they do assemble a strong squad, more competition the better the games

well for all those celtic fans like roberto and ponyobrien and also townfan who never had the experience of tryin to gather lads from a rural area to play on a sunday morning i think you should try it sometime, not everyone has and should have aspirations to get the premier league, some lads are out for the enjoyment and that is st nicholas level. its very easy speak like that when you have the pick of clonmel to choose from and also with the luxury of b teams and youth teams to fall back on, come to the rural area and find out whats its like to run a team!

Its not as easy as you think in Clonmel. There are 7 junior teams in the town.

Have a look at the results yourself - they are all on the tsdl website. Take particular note of the results in the second-half of the season.

Well said again sgtbilko. There is a huge difference between running a club in a densely populated area compared to running a club in a rural parish. St.Nicholas operate from the small parish of Solohead. They have a base - a local identity. Their motto is to keep the club community based - a club from the parish for the parish. The first division is their comfort zone. Other posters have said Borris will now strengthened their team to compete in the Premier division. That means they have to go outside their community. Fine if that is their club policy - local players will have to make way for these new signings. Some clubs just do not want to operate like that and quite a few of those clubs are in the first division where they are happiest.

Willie Mulcaire and Tommy Gaynor will have notions of coming up and signing 7 or 8 players to try and win the league,i do not think it will happen though,i think that day is gone where they will have that kind of pull, the players are not out there,Villa are in a lot of trouble but if Donal Duggan,Alan Leahy,Jody O Grady,David Maher,Aaron Ryan all stay then i think Villa will still be the stronger side

Ok this debate about St Nicks could go on and on.... So they should head to the premier league with no pressure other than to compete and enjoy the season and see where it will take them, and learn from the experience. Has Mick Ryan left Villa as I notice you did'nt include him in
your list Mega Tots????

Wasn't impressed with St.Nicholas past few games and I do think they did "throw" the games. They only needed a point for promotion in their last 3 or 4 games and went to Old Bridge with 10 players, no goalkeeper and were just messing through the whole game. They finished with 9 men and lost 5-0. The players did say before hand to some Old Bridge lads that they had no intentions on going up. I must say fair play to Old Bridge for going out against Moyglass last week and going to win the game to make sure St.Nicholas go up even though they didn't want to. Bridge could have easily gave the game to Moyglass and let them try win their last game and go up.
Old Bridge would have no problem going up but had a bad start to year but great 2nd half taking 19pts form 24. Bridge don't have the facilities but still would have gone up as they have the ambition to play in the top league. Nicholas have all the facilities and support so why wouldn't they want to go play against the better teams. Think it was bad form.

Well said greenlane to be fair the Bridge have been up and down a lot of times and still have the desire to go play in the premier league more teams should follow their act...and enough about this its harder to run a team because they are a small community its equally as hard in populated areas.

And nononsense has no problem with the way St Nicholas 'behaved' against Old Bridge?? More carry on like that will ruin the game. And if they are so parochial why don't they take up hurling or football. Fair play to the Bridge, not afraid of going up or down and always give a good honest account of themselves.

I'm not connected with St.Nicholas so not concerned about the game against Old Bridge. Simply saying it as it is in the First division. I think a previous poster has said this debate has gone on long enough so I will make no further comment on it.

Lads is there any truth that Kevin Waters is signing for Celtic, heard that this evening,Celtic might be a force next season if that is true
dont think he is with limerick or waterford at present so it could be a possibility. what a signing he would be for celtic, with him and few other new signings they would give league a fair rattle next season

He will not be signing for Clonmel Town, His brother Brian already plays with Celtic and i'm sure that would have an influence in his decision. Clonmel Celtic will not be that far away next season, they only lost one game last season.

danny graham did his best and would know his stuff. the problem is not the manager but the club. they dont care about senior football and are trying to concentrate on schoolboys. villa are in big trouble, believe it.

in fairness, dalglish and danny are very similar, both only after takin up new jobs and did well. both good for a goal in there playin days ;)
I wouldnt be so sure, i think borris will give it a good rattle next year and finish above villa on the league. I think borris will be 4th or 5th and i for one would think that would be a great achievment. maybe a good run in a cup and that would be a good year back in the top flight i think.
ya balls, it will be good to have it back, its one of them games you would miss when its gone.

Ah villa will be strong again next year i reckon, i think theres a few lads here tryin to fool us and sayin they are finished. Dont be suprised to see a big villa backlash next season.

Good to see Daily Stars man of the match last Sunday was Paul Breen. when one remembers he was very sick all week up to half an hour before the game his display got 9/10. How they chose Keith Hartnett, the Pike Rovers captain, baffled everyone, even Pike. Paul Breen is now recognised as the best junior/amateur player in the country and his performances over the years are consistent and top class. Isn't it baffling to note he has NEVER received even a NOMINATION from the TSDL Referees.

agree totally with you nononense, breen is a collosus, michaels missed his aerial doominance at set pieces in the final as he stayed back for everyone of them, he is the best centre half the league has seen in a long time, on your point about the referees awards, they sure have come up with some red herrings over the years, does not surprise me he is never picked! hartnett was very poor last sunday, thought wayne colbert or colm enright was man of the match
Thought paul breen was definatly best st michaels player on the day. Also thought pa quin was leading line very well and unlucky to be taken off.

Fully agree with you there. Have seen Pa Quinn taken off several times this season when playing well. He was doing fine last Sunday. The same has happened with Padraic Fogarty - he never plays a full game. Always a certainty to be taken off if he starts. Anyway its over and done with now.

I would go as far to say that not starting foggy cost Saints the Fai,that is just my opinion although i know it was shared by several others at the game,he scored 2 against Pike in the Munster semi,he is a big game player and a major handful,Cremins always looks to be negative first but once you have reached a final take the shackles off,Saints had the better team but never went and tried to win the game
pa quinn should have been left up front, the substitution should have been bring on jossi guerin instead of thomas fahey who never got going in 2nd half and drop richie ryan back midfield. if this had been done at 1-1 saints could have nicked it. buts its always what ifs etc after a defeat. foggy should have started too , top class player. pity davey ryan is retired for saints he would have won it for saints in my opinion if on the field trevor cosgrave played well but is not a major threat going forward just felt saints were lacking that on the day

Paul Breen has been a top player for years and the only reason he doesn't win player of year is because he may be a bit vocal in games to the refs... they will not vote for you if they don't like you???? One of the players who got a nomination this year had 7 yellows and a red. Another had 6 yellows etc, certainly more than Paul Breen. I don't know what system the Referees use but it certainly doesn't include disciplinary record or consistent good performances. To think Paul Breen has never received even a nomination takes a lot of gloss off these awards. Absolute farce.

Well i think the red card debate is irrelevant as we saw in cooke park in the league decider Breen will not be sent off regardless of the tackle,it certainly was a beauty, personally i believe the refs look at certain guys getting international recognition and focus on the guys who get ignored, how many times has Tony Scully been the tsdl player of the year and his brother Paul, prime example

Ya i i agree ... I personally think players who have enough recognition are ignored. Kind of a case of share the wealth i suppose and give other lads the lime light for a night. So more often than not the "real player of the year" is not even nominated.

No chance of any of them signing for Borris,Foggy is going to Thurles Town and Mick may go with him but i think he will stay at Villa and Alan Leahy is a definite to stay with Villa and Barry will stay with Town, from what i have heard Borris are chasing Michael Rafter and a couple from Borrisoleigh
michael rafter could be available , has not started with waterford of late plus there signing a class act in adam mcsherry so he could fall down the pecking order at the RSC. hope the tsdl dont lose 2 class players in foggy and mick ryan to thurles town in north tipp league be a shame to lose 2 of our better performers

Borris were being compared to Man City at the start of the season, rumours of players getting money and all sorts of signings yet none of that really materialised,a reasonably local side won the first division,Foggy is not going to walk away from winning a munster to play north tipp,Barry Ryan is not going to leave a club like Town for Borris,i think Borris will need to sign at least 4 though,i saw Cashel beat them 5-0 in the fai and they were definitely carrying a few weak links
