Anyone jumped in and booked yet.

I'm really tempted to get in and get booking, as there are not many flights to Bari.

Yah but I also booked Milan back in September.

Got Ryanair via Frankfurt Hahn from Dublin for €40 total one way incl taxes and charges. €30 if you have visa electron. That is out Tuesday March 31st.

Please make your own judgements on the reports before booking though. I've limited time to do the trip so have to gamble. The 2nd one I referenced looks pretty official but I've never heard of the news agency before.

Bari is ok for those travelling to Milan, Easy Jet fly 3 times daily to Bari and Ryanair once a day.

Likewise Easyjet fly 3 times a day to Naples from Milan.

while there is a change of airport it's not as bad as could be!

Find it strange that two World Cup games on the trot are played in what is a backwater of southern Italy.

Claimed in the Bari site it was in La Gazzetta dello sport, but nothing about it on their website. As for the TV station, the Evening Herald was claiming it was Naples last week.

Some of the comments in that thread about the relationship between Lippi and Cassano makes Givens and Ireland look like best buddies.

Mattarese, "the old bloke", looks as if he indeed is the John Delaney of Italian football.

Bari is 558 miles away from Milan so doable my train I suppose.

Stadium holds 58k so should be good from the point of view of getting tickets.

Interestingly they played the Scots in Bari in the last campaign and got the result they wanted.

Be wary about the airports. There are to airports recognised servicing Milano. Linate (LIN) and Malpensa (MXP) the hub aeroport near the Alps.

Easyjet use Linate and Malpensa but according to their website Ryanair are flying passengers to an airport servicing Bergamo, Orio al Serio (BGY) and calling it Milan.
You are right there are return services from this airport to Bari (BRI).

I have no idea where the game will take place I am lead to believe there may be an announcement two months before the date of the game.
http://www.bookryanair.com/skysales/FRSelect.aspx

It's better to keep with the three-letter code that way service-providers like Ryanair can call a destination what they like but it's understood by the passenger what and where it is.

Anybody know much about Bari? Never ventured that far south when in Italia. I'll try and merge this trip into a holiday and go see Florence and maybe Naples.

For those flying Ryanair they will already be in Bergamo

For those flying Aer Lingus on the morning flight they will be in Linate

Linate to Malpensa 42 miles, Linate to Bergamo 33 miles

Bergamo to Malpensa is 58 miles.

Linate is only 6 miles from Milan, while Malpensa is next nearest at 31 and Bergamo is 35 miles.

Bergamo is a major Ryanair hub with daily flights to 6 other Italian cities. Likewise Easyjet fly into 6 different cities from Malpensa.

Unfortunately for us booked into Linate, which is like London City, there are no internal Italian flights with low fare airlines from here.

Was'nt it the same with the German FA when Stuttgart got the game ? the head of the German FA was from Stuttgart ?

I wish they would just put us out of our misery and confirm it as I am peed off doing the various permutations !

Have been to Bari a few times, it's a fairly nice place. There isn't a huge amount to do there but it's got an old castle if you're into that and there are some decent beaches nearby. Lecce (about 90mins to the south) is a nicer town to look at. Also there is a big port there where you can get boats to Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and some Greek Island, also Turkey too. Avoid driving there if you can, traffic is a total nightmare and there are tonnes of lorries from Turkey, Iran, Egypt when some of the cargo ferries come in - it's not unusual to be stuck in traffic near the port for hours...

You can do it on the train from Naples, Rome (just), Pescara or Lecce... Milan would be an expensive and long train ride.

The stadium is actually pretty decent, it was used in the World Cup and also for the Red Star - Marseille European Cup final in the early 1990s.

Still no confirmation anywhere but surely Today Fm wouldnt announce unless they were sure, would be very embarassing otherwise. They couldnt have picked a more awkward venue for us really. Think the numbers travelling will be alot less now, wont have so many one trippers interested in a wed night in Bari.

Naples is 200 miles from Bari, Rome 209, so train is an option from either of these cities. Easy jet fly to Naples from London. Id imagine Aer Lingus or maybe Ryanair will organise a charter and charge a ridiculous price per seat.

Neither Ryanair or Aer Lingus do Charters, Ryanair fly from Stanstead to Bari out Monday back Friday about £150 return, most who have booked Milan will have no problems getting cheap flights with Easy Jet from Malpensa. Linate to Malpensa €10 pp bus transfer.

FKK it, loss my nerve

Because of Today FM going into a bit of detail and not just a one liner, the above references, the Bari connection to the personnel in Italian FA, the difficulty in getting to Bari, difficulty for good good hotels and the fact I will only be doing a tue-thur and so cant swan around Italy all week i have booked one way flights (E75) and hotels - not a great choice for hotels and Italy can be very hit and miss but at least you can cancel hotel

After I booked I see the FAI are urging fans not to make travel arrangement until offical confirmation although they have informal confirmation? Today FM reports now carry the FAI advice

http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2008/1231/ireland.html

it may have been better if they posted it on their web site - Awe well I took the chance, may be able to sort something out if its not Bari. Will wait for offical confirmation until i book the return

They really are determined to make us sweat on the venue, and wait as long as possible. The Germans told us we'd be playing in Stuttgart within a month of the date being announced.

Interesting to see if the tour companies charge €800 for this trip, when the demand falls.

Surprise to who??

They put the Scots in Bari, so it was always a possibility.

Decent stadium afaik, athletic track, good location weatherwise, so not bad. Poor though for the travel agents and press corps, who banked on Milan/Rome, and hiked their prices as a result. €800 - WTF????:eek:

Looking at various clips on utube, the Scots really seemed to enjoy Bari.Given the time of year and southerly location, beers on the beach look a distinct possibility. Also the stadium looks class, and the locals generated a real football atmosphere. The Scots end wasn't full, but other sides were packed.Try, italia v Scozia a Bari ,on utube.
