In Aalborg? He played the full game but wasn't involved in the goal.

Cillian Sheridan scored APOELs 4th goal in their 4-0 win over Aalborg tonight to send them into the group stages.

Worth a spot in the Irish team at the moment. We really cannot afford to turn away any attacking talent, and he is quite decent

What a laid back chap. He was asked some career-oriented questions some to which he replied "it's not something I've thought about." Cool dude.

Got this from OptaJoe via Balls.ie; if Sheridan plays in the 2014-15 Champions League proper, he'll become the fifth Irish player to play in the competition (post-1992) with a non-UK team. Who were the four others?
tetsujin1979
28/08/2014, 7:39 AM
At a guess, Alan Mahon, Phil Babb, David Connolly, and Aiden McGeady

All correct. Just out of curiosity... who were the guesses? Mahon anyway I suppose, he played the first half of a 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid apparently.

Sporting Lisbon x2, Feyenoord & Spartak Moscow respectively.

Just saw the follow up tweet from OptaJoe with the answers, so I'm proud of that!

Well done Tets, impressive.

I saw the answers along with the question. Otherwise, I would have known McGeady & Babb... I suspect I would have thought of Connolly after a while but not been fully sure if he played in the CL or not. Not a chance in hell would I have got Mahon.

Tets, another one to rack your brains. Nine Irish (republic of Ireland) players to have won the European Cup/CL?
Stuttgart88

Irwin, Keane*, Whelan, Finnan. Shay Brennan in 1968.
Heighway in 77? Potter in 2005? He was there alright.
John O'Shea in Moscow.
*Does Keane count?
DannyInvincible
28/08/2014, 6:24 PM
Lawrenson, Beglin, Aldridge?...
Stuttgart88
28/08/2014, 6:42 PM
They lost in 1985 and didn't win again until 2005.
Lawrenson in 1984 of course, duh. I think that predates Beglin and certainly Aldo. Was Michael Robinson in the 1984 team?
DannyInvincible
28/08/2014, 6:50 PM
Ha, aye, I was getting a bit ahead of myself with Aldridge.
Beglin joined Liverpool in May of 1983 but didn't participate in 1984. He played in the 1985 final though.
Robinson was another winner.

Actually it was 10, I missed Finnan:o, or 11 if including Potter, but did he get a medal!

There was another 1968. I cheated and looked on wiki.

Tony Dunne was in the Man U 1968 cup winning team.
Shame that you'd need to cheat to get that one.

I was one at the time. You were probably doing your Inter.
geysir
28/08/2014, 8:24 PM
I did my inter in '71 or was it '72.
It is indeed tragic that you grew up without an acute awareness of your football/culture tradition.

I did my best despite a strict rugby upbringing. I wasn't dragged to Lansdowne Road, Dalymount and Milltown. I demanded it.

Keane didn't win it due to his suspension for the final but he did get one of the club's medal allocation. The nine winners who played or were on the bench (JOSh) were
Tony Dunne & Shay Brennan (1968)
Steve Heighway (1977 & 1978)
Whelan, Lawrenson and Robinson (1984)
Irwin (1999)
Finnan (2005) and
John O'Shea (as an unused sub but he did get a medal)
These days UEFA gives 40 winners' medals to the winning club so people like Charlie Gallacher (in Celtic's 1967 squad) and Eamon Deacy (Villa 1982) would have got a medal by today's standards.

"The match in Turners Cross last night between Cork City and Shamrock Rovers featured a player who (if my sources are correct) has more European appearances than all of the starting 11 for Ireland last Wednesday night, bar Given, combined. Dan Murray, captain of league winning teams at Cork in 2005 and Shamrock Rovers in 2010 and 2011, played over 35 times (he, himself, does not know the exact number) in European club competitions."

A little piece about Sheridan's GAA background. They overstate the importance of last night's game somewhat.

Useless, he was not much better for the second, half asleep slow uncoordinated the reactions of a sloth.
Can't see him saving anything unless the ball actually hits him.
