Not questioning his ability at all, but as you alluded to above his injuries have hampered his progression, and I don't think we'll be in a position next season to carry any passengers. We had Keith Foy and Marc Kenny in the Prem two years ago, talented but unfit. Once bitten etc
We have signed Mick O'Donnell from UCD also...not sure what to make of that yet.

Eamonn Seydak has left Finn Harps and has joined Irish League side Institute.
Meanwhile, Stephen Capper and Martin Lauchlan have both been released by the club

Wouldn't be surprised if we're taking a look at him as well.

I hear Dundalk are favourites to sign him
Not too sure how reliable my source is but he's normally fairly accurate...

Would be a good signing for them, he could certainly still do the business in the 1st Division.

There's not a chance craptown will be able to afford his wages (unless they're lucky enough to have some secret sugardaddy involved in the club - which i doubt they do :) ) . Sure would be a good laugh if tehy signed him and they didnt go up again (is this 5 consecutive seasons down in the graveyard now :D )
Maynard, wasn't really taking a pop - genuinely think you'll stay up. Some decent signings!!

UCD are looking for an experienced striker, though I'd imagine his wages would be a bit above our level. That said, if Dublin City can link themselves with him...

Aye, but the fact that Arkins is being released, means that he has to be careful with what he demands in wages - otherwise he'll price himself in such a way that nobody will touch him. I'd imagine, IF he's looking for the same wages he received at Portadown, that figure might drop as the offers wane.

According to FM 104 Pat Fenlon is interested in Arkins!!
Guaranteed scorer I guess, but we'd have to be off our rockers!! That said, we do need a third striker.

It's all in Arkins hands I guess as to what he wants money wise, and what kind of things he wants to achieve/compete for in his final couple of years...not a bad position for a 35 year old footballer to find himself in.

Paddy McLaughlin. Really rate Paddy but centre defence is our strongest position and with the signing of Ken Oman he wouldn't get much playing time.

According to an interview on local radio with Alan Mathews, LTFC have signed 4 players already but he's not mentioning any names yet. Vinny Arkins deal might be complete?
Apparently UCD have re-signed Alan Cawley on a free, two years after getting E24k for him. :D
Did Ollie ever cough up that cash ? Great bit of business by UCD if he did.

We took a relaxed approach to the discussions. Because the initial FAI Tribunal ruled in our favour, we were always guaranteed the money(ies).

Thought he had done ok for himself with you so was kinda excited when was told he had signed. Also looking forward to checking out Andrew Cousins coz heard some good stuff bout him last year.
It was a relief to see we had signed some players....was so worried bout the situation had a weird dream last nite that we were playing a pre-season friendly against Dublin City and the only player we had was David Lee! I think David is great but even he cant be the whole team!

The FAI paid us the money and stopped it from Shels' prize money this season. Ollie still didn't have the manners to pay us directly even after we were proved to be correct.

You have to say that transfer was a utter waste of big money in eL terms. I've still at this point to see any confirmation he has signed for us.

02/01/2006, 7:36 PM
True about the confirmation, though I'm happy taking the word on our forum about it. I think he signed at a bad time - they bought a couple of big name midfielders at the same time (Ndo and Moore), and he never really broke through in the end.

What was the story? Did Shels sign him under the assumption they would pay nothing and hence take a risk on seeing if he'd turn out to be more than a squad player? Surely he is one of the most expensive flops in eL history. Don't mean to lay into him (given he could well be ours again) but €24k for a player who did next to nothing is the type of expensive luxury an eL club cannot afford. I perfectly understand given Shels signed other players and had a strong squad means it's not an indictment of the player's quality or performances that much but what a waste of money.

02/01/2006, 7:51 PM
Nah, even they wouldn't take such a risk. When they signed him - or approached us to sign him - we told them compensation would be due. If they took the risk, they're idiots, pure and simple. He has quality, though, that's undoubted - maybe they didn't plan for his temperament...

That's how it looks to me.
If they took the risk, they're idiots, pure and simple. More likely arrogant I'd say. Ollie expected to get his way as usual.

I didn't see anything wrong with his temperment, he was usually one of the most committed players and apparently one of the most approachable. He just wasn't good enough though he has great technique, he has a few problems. He isn't strong enough and doesn't assert himself on the game enough to be a central mid fielder and hasn't the pace or movement to be a winger, so despite his good technique it's difficult to ever see him being an effective player.

You mustn't have seen that much of him so! ;) He has a tendency to play well when he feels like it, which he did a fair bit under Doolin for us (though not at all under Mahon).
Approachable yes...unless he's drunk and singing...

Pat Scully's bid to sign the entire Kildare and Kilkenny squads is continuing. Rovers have signed Gareth Cooney from Kildare and Jamie Duffy from Kilkenny.

I admit I don't know much about the players Rovers have signed but Kilkenny without Scully's loan signings and Kildare were hardly anything to speak of last season. When you take their players do you not become only as good as those two clubs?

pity we couldnt of get Cawley, he is a class player. Rovers have only got 2 in so far but have lost bout 10-15 including Tim McCann whose gone to Linfield. Heres hopin Sean Connors is just takin his time lookin for decent players who will be an addition to rovers and the league and not just signing Dublin rejects like most clubs seem to be doing.
