Any news on where Connolly will be next year?
I was disappointed that he wasn't given a chance this year. I thought he was their best player when they were in the championship last year.
Hello matey,
I offer you a big welcome to this site and specifically this thread :D
I agree he was the best player in the Championship last year (hell, I believe he was the best player this year he just didn't get a chance ;)). He recently had surgery on his hip and will not be even training until September so he probably will be loaned out when he returns to fitness. By the way, expect a backlash for bumping this thread ;)

Thanks :) I was kinding of expecting it... but I think more people should stand up for him, I think he's really talented... He really seemed to link Sunderland's midfield with their strikers last year... I think they missed that a lot this year. I hope he gets back his fitness soon and gets a good opportunity to show what he can do somewhere else.

I agree with you...the problem is everyone else in Ireland and this board :);)
If we had a most disliked Irish international poll on this board I'd say he'd be 2nd to Stephen Ireland :(

I thought there was a rule against one person having two user accounts? Surely there cannot be two David Connolly fans in this universe?
Must be really slow in the Ireland section of foot.ie when Ian Harte and David Connolly threads start rearing their ugly heads again.

I'm a big fan of Connolly too... He always seemed to get a hard time from the crowd and put himself under too much pressure when he played for Ireland. Can't understand how he didnt' get more of a run in the Sunderland team last year... he was awesome for them in their promotion push.

There is a reason a player gets a "hard time" usually because they're not very good. Both he and Stephen Elliott are cut from the same mould. To survive as a midget striker you have to have that extra ability. Alas neither has it and while both would be reasonable Championship players, they certainly aren't international class unfortunately. Connolly has had some awful games for Ireland I am afraid.

You must have been ****ing yourself when he was linked with Wednesday last season (assuming the owls part of your name is for them)

Oh no, I've been caught red-handed! Lord knows the first thing I'd do if I created a second account is make it obvious its me by going straight for the Connolly thread. Have dahamsta check the IPs if you don't believe me

It's like heroin to you Worm. You couldn't stay away from the Connolly thread with your new account. You are using rolling IPs.
Needless to say David Connolly is sh*t. I do admire your unflinching loyalty though.

The problem is, musicinmouth and I posted within an hour of each other and rolling IPs (to my knowledge) change only after 24 hours or so. Maybe I used Anonymouse or something and all of that heroin made me forget

as weird as it may be to you, i think david connolly is very skilful and the most underrated of our players... i know he has had some very bad games for us and missed some sitters... but i have seen him play amazingly at club level.
and no i didn't open up a second account.

oh dear ... "I thought there was a rule against one person having two user accounts? Surely there cannot be two David Connolly fans in this universe?"
I was quite obviously .. at least I thought it was obvious.... JOKING!!! Boom boom!
and then another new poster appears ... so I made a joke (okay, this time it was not so obvious) that it was either you or one of your pals in Chicago .. (why am I even explaining this) .. posing as the third DC fan in the DC fan club. No conspiracy theory .. no reporting to dahamsta .. just bouncing the ball and having cheap laugh. Sorry. Nothing malicious either ... actually rated Connolly in his prime and if only he had stuck that chance in against Spain in the World Cup Second round game against Spain .. he might of become a folk hero... and the David Connolly fan club might have a few more members.
and why would have i (or anyone) anything against Chicago (or any city for that matter)... ridiculous. I don't hate Connolly or Chicago or even Bohs or Rovers.
note to self: never post on the david connolly thread again.

Surely this thread is nearly at an end as it's about a player that's international career is over, and one who never achieved anything major during his career. It just seems pointless that people are still discussing him, although I do feel that he was given a raw deal by some on this forum:eek:
That is not a hint to keep the thread going;)

I like Pardew but I feel he is punching below his weight, plus Southampton already have 3 strikers who can score in League 1 (Saganowski, Lambert, Waigo)

You think Connolly is punching below his weight? He hasn't played regular football for years, 2006-7 the only season in the last 4 that he's played more than 20 games, and he hasn't scored since then either.
Lucky anyone's taken a punt on him.
it was a good 14 months while it lasted... ;)

This kid could be a star for the future.....................
Feel a bit sorry for him, he never really got his career kick started, in and out of the Irish squad etc. Then in and mostly out at sunderland.

Connolly would have done well in Scotland where they like midget forwards (e.g. Celtic's McDonald and Maloney).

Huh? I live in Canada but I'm not Canadian. I'm from Kildare. I don't get your point. I realize this guy is your favourite player but move on, he'll never play for Ireland again. You don't see me bringing up threads on guys that have nothing to do with the current Irish set up. Do you think Trap even knows who this guy is?

Well **** I sure hope so because he was in his first 40 man squad. By the way I meant to put a ;) by the Canadian comment, I edited it. I have nothing against Canadians, I have many Canadian second cousins, a good friend who is Canadian, two of my great-grandparents were Canadian, and I love hockey...I just like to give them crap
Also I just remembered Adam Lallana too being another striker Southampton have who will score goals in League One (indeed he scored two today)

He deserves a bit more respect than a statement like that.Hes not gonna challenge for a place in the international team again but as an Irish player alot of people will still keep an eye on his career and hope things go well for him.

I had to post this because I have a feeling some of you will have a laugh over it but I believe it :)
The Irish striker, who has been a prolific marksman during his career, is a big time player with a down to earth attitude.
There is not a hint of pretentiousness about Connolly, or any notion of him being ‘a big time Charlie’ having dropped down to League One after so long playing at the highest levels in the game.

The "angry ant" (as christened by Glenn Roeder at West Ham) came off the bench for Southampton today and scored an injury time goal in a 3-1 win.
Not looking for him to be recalled but good to see him getting a few goals after a horrendous run of injuries.

Scored two against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup earlier with two clinical finishes, which makes it 4 goals in 4 games playing for Southampton (remarkably 3 of those appearances were from the bench, so his goal scored per minute played ratio must be quite high).
This is not an appeal for him to be called up to the squad, but it's nice to see him doing well.

First time getting to watch him since very early 2007-08 and what a first game. Nearly hit my head on the ceiling both times he scored then did a merry jig :D
