Yeah I was definitely grinning on your behalf when he scored the first one. I actually made a bet with my brother that he'd give me X amount per Connolly goal, and I'd give him X amount per Lambert goal.
Needless to say, it was a good game for me too...I had also bet on a Southampton win!

Always liked Connolly. Always seemed genuine. He'd have been important for us if Robbie hadn't wandered onto the scene. Glad to see him playing and scoring.

As a Southampton fan, I have to say Connolly has been a fantastic signing. I wasn't too sure what to expect as I haven't seen him play for a good few years, but so far he has shown himself to be well above the quality for League One.

Always liked Conners so I stuck a couple of euro on him becoming Southampton's top-scorer this season in Paddy Power. 50/1 odds I got.
Now that my friends is a great bet!!!! check it out, it may have changed but possibly not...

Of course I'd say its a good bet, but watch out, because Lambert and Lallana are tearing it up for Soton as much as Connolly.

still, with odds like that ya'd be mad not to throw a couple of euro on it. i remember him a couple of times scoring 4 goals in matches (wolves and wimbledon) in a higher league....he's a goalscorer and in League one he'll continue banging them in....ya'll especially be cursing yourselves for not throwing money on him if Lambert and/or Lallana get injured :)

David Connolly, mere moments after coming off the bench, making his first appearance since recovering from a abdominal injury that kept him out for months, fires an injury time winner for Southampton in the FA Cup to break Shrewsbury hearts. What a legend. :highfive::worship::cool:

I've been a fan so long I don't remember the exact details, something to the effect of when I started supporting Ireland he was a regular in the team and a good player so I liked him. I support all Irish players but nowadays I have to admit there are some I don't like as much others but I like all of the players from when I started supporting the team though unfortunately many have retired. The amount of flak he gets may have strengthened my resolve to see him succeed as well...its the same with Kilbane.
Honestly though, what is there not to like? (thats a rhetorical question for all of you wise asses :))

Yeah I always defended him when it always seemed popular to give out yards about him
He has nearly exactly the same record as Doyle in a green jersey and yet Doyle never seems to get flak (not that he deserves it either).
Was I the only one that thought he had a poor game against France in Paris??
In fact he probably has a better record considering the minutes played (hom many times did Connolly play the last 5 minutes of games?)

3 times, started 24 matches and came on 17 times.
Fun fact, in the 9 matches he played 90 minutes for Ireland he scored 5 goals and he didn't play 90 against Liechtenstein.

I think Connolly was done for once Keane came on the scene - they're similar players and neither compliments the other. Connolly always looked good alongside Quinn, but I don't think Mick ever really trusted him after the stamp against Belgium.

They did complement each other when Keane scored against Turkey in the play off. I can't recall any other time they were paired in a competitive match after that.

Yeah I remember him coming off the bench against Turkey and doing well, playing part in the goal if i remember.
And yes he was certainly done for when Keane came on the scene.
I particularly remember him being taken off after 25 minutes against Andorra when it was Keane who was playing awful and should've been taken off.
One of his best games in a green jersey for me was against Iran away.
Couldn't have asked for more out of him

For sheer novelty value I'd bloody LOVE to see Connolly playing for Ireland in a friendly sometime. I can't think of a player like him for us in that most fans seem to despise him even though he's played in the world cup for us and scored a hat-trick in a competitive game for us and much else besides. I think he's hilarious. "I should be Ireland's number one striker", "the angry ant" etc.
(Funny thing is, there's lads today who don't give a hoot about playing for us who are forgiven but Connolly at least always wanted to play (except for Don Givens of course) and he's still hated...... I'm rambling now, I know, it's late...)

Irish people don't like arrogance, which is why Connolly is despised. Of course, if you drape it in a flag, they love you, hence the adulation of Roy Keane.

Why was he on the bench in the first place? Doing well mind you for a 34 year old but his international days are behind him unless we have a game against Liechtenstein who are his bunnies.

Connolly was always "game as a pebble" as Johnny Giles might say, tried hard etc etc but I developed a grudging and irrational dislike of him since his sending off against Belgium in '97. Just sayin, like.

I hold a greater grudge against the Austrian referee that night, who gave what was a blatant Irish throw in to the Belgians. Whilst the Irish remonstrated, the Belgians took the throw quickly and caught us cold, leading to the Luc Nilis goal that ended our hopes of a third world cup in a row.

I know you will all be interested to know that since Southampton lost Connolly to a groin injury they have two wins, two losses (both of which they failed to score in), and a draw. Keep in mind that prior to his injury they had only lost two matches all season and had scored in every match. They had also won every home match when he was fit and their draw came today at home.

A fallout with David Villa in camp nou and Connolly is excluded "injured" a couple of weeks before the transfer window opens? Hardly all a coincidence!

Goal Connolly!!!! Very much deserved, whipped cross comes in from the right, takes a touch off a Soton player in the box, Connolly quickest to react as he pounces and provides the finish from 6 yards out. 2-0.
Also had a large hand in the first goal, nice run down the right from Martin(?)*** pulls its back, finds Connolly who smashes is goalwards , saved by the keeper's foot (really probably should've scored), Guly pounces on the rebound to put Southampton 1-0
Oh yes, and a funny little bit about the game that I think sums up Connolly's career. Forest fans have started booing Connolly whenever he touches it (before his goal). You may be thinking, oh he played for Notts County? No. He wound them up? No. His only crime was getting clattered in the side of the head with a flying elbow from Luke Chambers who was then red carded...Connolly didn't even pull a Ronaldo or anything.
