See everyone, its not my fault this thread keeps coming back.

If he scores against Liverpool (2nd best team in Europe, probably in the world, if you go by last year) or Man U (best team in (debatably) the best league in the world, as of last year) in the next two weeks (not to mention Birmingham) he should be in the squad for Denmark. Same with Murphy and Stokes, though I expect they will be anyway. And no, everyone, I don't care what you think...if you haven't noticed, you can't change my mind :o

David Connolly has scored as many important goals for Ireland as Lee Trundle has. None. 40 games and 9 goals. 4 competitive = hat trick vs Lichestenstein and one against Cyprus.

The much loved Connolly thread is back and heading for 10,000 views! The thread reflects Connolly - you just can't get rid of him.

Not far off the full set - David Connolly, Ian Harte, Is Robbie Keane any good?.

What we need is a Saipan debate.

I clearly stated that is was not me who brought it back, blame danonion or whoever it was. We'll have to wait and see how the next 2 weeks unfold though before I argue for him to be back in the squad though

I'd take SAFC's word over theirs, plus if you scroll down they have a little bit on Connolly and how he needs 1 goal to make it 100 in League football.
I'll make everyone here a deal. If Connolly starts 3 games and plays at least 70 minutes in each (this is between now and the 2 qualifiers) and doesn't score or get an assist, I will never post in this thread again, if he scored one against Birmingham, nothing happens, if he scores one against Man U or Liverpool (and not just a tap-in) you must say maybe you were wrong, and if he scores 2 or more, you must admit you were likely wrong and he should be in the squad for the 2 qualifiers...everyone, how does that sound?

Also, the match will not be shown on Setanta until 1 in the morning (your time) so I won't be around to argue until about 3 (when it ends)

Where do you think they got their information from? Every club issues a press release before each game. O'Donovan was on all the other releases, not Connolly.

Jesus, everyone here shies away from the main picture of the post and takes the small details. Does it really matter? It seems a good few people might be worried they were wrong after all.

If the deals unfair, at least you could tell me how so

By the way, Connolly is starting up front with Chopra, so I won't be around for awhile as I'll watch the match on delay

Well you can hardly blame Connolly for not scoring tonight, he never had a chance, he played fine, but the midfield was utter ****, and I turned it off when Keane took Connolly off in the 60th minute. Even I can admit its not the worst thing Keane has ever done, but thats for another thread and another time.

Connolly is utter pants. He's preventing a number of younger, infintely more talented Irish strikers from getting the games they require at Sunderland to aide their development and for that I hate the imp even more. Rubbish last night again. Too weak and slow and not clinical enough for the Premiership. NEXT.

I guess when you go into matches expecting to see something you somehow manage to see it. How was he dreadful? He was certainly better than Michael Chopra in the time that he was on (Chopra must have done well after, no big surprise as he was playing with someone who was 6 feet tall), he should've won a penalty, he never had any help from the midfield (Edwards and Etuhu were at the worst I have ever seen them), and he even won headers against guy half a foot taller than him. Next time try going in with a clear mind.
For example, if I think livehead1 is a dumbass, everytime I see he has posted I will assume it is bad and when I read it will likely think it is bad. Same as you.

6 out of 10. My math skills aren't great, but, according to my calculations, 5 would be half on that scale, and thus average...doesn't that mean...again, my math skills aren't great...that he played above average? 6 is more than 5, correct? 4 is what Colin Doyle got last Saturday, that would be dreadful, I suppose. Surely 6 is at least average. Again, my math could be wrong, if so, please educate me.

http://sports.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Football/2007/08/15/Prem-Birmingham-v-Sunderland-ratings--stats/
Here too, slightly worse than Sky's, but, unless the .5 means minus 5, I'm pretty sure thats still above average. If not, what does that make McShane? Man, all of this math is making my head hurt

Mate. Sorry, but just shush talking about David Connolly. Why do you like him so much? Spend time focusing your energy on something beneficial like knitting or something.

Everyone knows them Sky ratins are uselss, all Steven Gerrard has to do is play and he gets a minimum of a 7!

Cheick Oumar Dabo, David Connolly, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Shay Given, Robbie Keane, George Ndah (retired, hard to rank)

Again No.

And don't try use the Premiership Player argument that I sometimes read. Connolly has had two Premiersip seasons. This season he's made 3 appearances with 0 goals. With Wigan in 05/06 he played 17 games and scored 1 Premiership goal. Not Premiership standard. I'm not saying his International Career is over, but at the moment he shouldn't be considered.

I don't think we're in a position to rule out someone because they're not Premiership standard.

He's not the person to lead us into a Golden Era. But I think he is (or was; haven't paid much attention the last while) good enough to be a squad player.

micls
08/04/2008, 8:33 PM
So if you can name 5 "premiership strikers" who've scored at least 4 goals this year then I'll accept your argument. Otherwise CONNOLLY IN.

I'd take Keane, Doyle, Murphy, Connolly and Morrison as our strikers.

Hardly the same as leading us into a golden era though....

Keane, Doyle and even Long have all scored more goals than him in the Premiership.

So I dont think he'l be leading us anywhere

Diarmo
08/04/2008, 8:40 PM
So good Championship players are acceptable now? I have always believed so, and it annoys me when I read people saying we should only pick Prem players a la Connolly.
For me, again, not in this squad - He's played barely 120 minutes of competitive football this season. On top of that we have good Championship strikers who are currently playing well AND crucially offer us something different. Lee (11 goals), and Folan 8 goals in 14 starts are better options for now. If Connolly regains form then sure. Call him up.
But I'd consider:

Keane
Doyle
Morrisson
Long
Murphy
Lee
Folan

all ahead of him at the moment.

Without A Doubt My Friend...what a perfect place for my 1,000th post. You people just wait and see. Unfortunately no one else will agree. Without a doubt should be in over Long, maybe Morrison too. If Murphy is to be played on the wing above him too. This thread comes at the most unopportune time though, Ciaran, you have to pick your spots. Connolly is hurt right now and hasn't played since January. He still hasn't been given a decent chance in the EPL though

GOOD GOD I'VE JUST SEEN THAT HE IS IN TRAP'S FIRST SQUAD, WHERE THE **** IS MY WALLET I NEED TO GET TO DUBLIN :D:D

This does befuddle me though

A preliminary squad of 40 players has been selected with the the help of Don Givens for the training camp in May and the two Internationals against Serbia and Columbia on May 24 and May 29.

I don't have a club to support really (I do support Wolves but they're never on TV and to be honest I've kind of fallen off in the past few years, though I still do like them) so its all about DC and Cheick Oumar Dabo for me right now, especially when Ireland have 3 months between matches. I was disappointed that he wasn't given a chance this year. I thought he was their best player when they were in the championship last year.
