Robbie had scored three times as many goals at club level by age 21 though (53 v 17)

If he scores as many international goals, he can go void of clubs goals for the rest of his career as far as I'm concerned.

So u want him to be David Healy basically :)

True. Though I find there tends to be a correlation between decent club career and improved national career...

If the international success matches then yes!

Tongue firmly in cheek, but in an ideal world he'd do both.

True, although 29 of Robbie's goals were for a second-tier team, in a less competitive era. That said, he did carry that form to the next level, with 34 in three seasons at Coventry, Inter and Leeds. In fairness, I don't yet see Ferguson coming near to Robbie's final international figure, but I can see him becoming our second highest scorer, by some margin - I still think we could be looking at the 40-50 range for him.

Meanwhile, Parrott and Idah are both on track to surpass Niall Quinn's total - so if we can sort out our midfield, perhaps there's still hope for the future

Let's not go down the embarrassment of the embarrassment of riches thread again...

Let's be honest, if we're too come close to qualifying for anything again, the likes of Idah need to get phased out for someone else. (But who that man could be I just don't know)

Not even brought on when Dovbyk was subbed off today.

Will be interesting to see if he even gets a few minutes near the end.

Update - he didn't.

I will repeat my previously voiced assessment that I think Brighton badly managed his ankle injury a couple of years ago. Hopefully this is not a reoccurance and it is something minor - because this kid still has the potential to be the best ever to play for Ireland.

Serie A teams are allowed to have 15 subs named, so you might as well just name everyone in case...

Doesn't start for Roma tonight even though Dovbyk isn't starting either. Will be interesting to see which of them is the manager's pick to come in off the bench. A bit concerning if he's now down to third choice at centre forward.

In a difficult position now, falling down the pecking order. Needs a goal or two to get back in the mix, but isn't getting enough minutes to have a realistic chance of scoring the goals he needs.

Not surprised Gasperini picked a more experience forward in Dybla for such a big game. I think Evan will be grand, new league, doesn't speak the language, he'll need time to settle. With Eurpe and the cup, they'll be playing 2 games a week for most of the season so should get his opportunity. Hopefully he'll start against Pizen thurs and open his account.

Something to note. Evan had his 21st birthday yesterday. Already has the same amount of International goals as Damien Duff, and has dealt with a serious injury that ruined a season and a half for him. Roma fans online love him from what I can see, he's doing fine

He got kicked in the ankle in 1st minute and he has to come off already. Hes been carrying that ankle all season, I wonder will it lead to being out for a while now to fix it properly. So annoying

Eirambler

That may well be that for him at Roma. There were already reports before the game that they were looking to send him back to Brighton at the earliest opportunity, he really needed a goal last night which might have seen things start to turn around for him there. Instead he got injured right at the start of the game.

Interesting that he was starting last night after the comments from manager. Disaster that he got injured almost immediately. Wonder if same ankle. Hes as likely to get game time at Roma as anywhere else at moment so hopefully back soon.

The problem is that it is the same ankle that caused problems at Brighton - and Brighton did not manage the injury properly. A loan club is not going to give him the time to heal properly and his contract with Brighton runs to 2029 so he is badly caught between a rock and a hard place at the moment.

He was great in preseason, but it is possible to re aggravate an old injury. Its starting to get worrying now though that its dragging on this long.Does he need another surgery to fix it at the cost of another season out? That would be disastrous

Off the bench against Cremonese and he finally breaks his Serie A duck with a simple finish.

First Irish scorer in Serie A since Brady or has anyone else scored there?

Undoes some of his good work by getting easily beaten in the air for a Cremonese consolation goal. He was miles off with the timing of his jump there.

So many people convinced that Roma want rid of him in January.. unless Roma have an injury crisis, the fact he's playing in a game that sends Roma to the top of Serie A, means he must have some trust of the manager..

Ferguson has injury issues, we all know that... but the young lad is still growing ffs.. he's got undoubted quality, but he's also 20..

Remember.. we'd Parrot written off at 20.. strikers could be mid 20s before they really mature.. hopefully the manager will give him time to mature, because he's potentially a serious striker..

At International level.. we've a top class keeper.. a defence that's finally maturing, and two of the best young strikers in Europe.. we're not far off a really decent International team

Eirambler
23/11/2025, 4:11 PM
They have a shortage of strikers which is contributing to him getting minutes.

The current view coming from Italy seems to be that, unless he turns it around in the next month he'll be going back to Brighton, that's coming from media outlets who seem to have a lot of info on what is going on at Roma. But there is time for him to turn things around and hopefully today might be a starting point.

In terms of where Ireland are at, midfield remains the big gap in the team. Cullen can do a bit protecting the defence, Azaz when played centrally looks more than good enough as a 10. But we need at least one of not two more midfielders in between them to step up. That said, Scotland have just qualified for a World Cup with a squad that I would say lacks any top class goalkeepers, centre backs or centre forwards. So, it is possible to hide weaknesses if the rest of the team plays to their best and - like Scotland did - you get a string of lucky breaks just when you need them.

It seemed when he went off after a few mins a month ago that he might be out for months so great to see him back. Good to get the goal. Roma don't create alot so chances are at a premium. Him and Troy as a 2 might have something.

Possibly our two best outfield players - scored 8 of our 9 goals in qualifying. We probably need to find a way to accommodate both.

It's a nice composed finish. I wouldn't call it simple exactly. I'll give him credit where it's due. He also more or less made the third with a couple of great involvements in the build up. Its good to see. I will hold my hands up and say I've been leaning towards the idea that he might not turn out as we hoped. But recent events have only reminded us all that there are a lot of twists and turns in football and general life and we shouldn't be too hasty to write young lads off.

Disappointed to hear he was easily beaten in the air for a goal, I didn't see it. But it's something I noticed an awful lot of in recent Ireland games. I would hope it's lack of match sharpness and not something innate. I know I was hopeless under a high ball and just couldn't judge the flight correctly.

Eirambler
23/11/2025, 4:57 PM
Simple in the sense that he had plenty of time and space to pick his spot. I'd be disappointed if he didn't score from there.

I wouldn't be rushing to jump on the bandwagon in terms of finding a way to start both Parrott and Ferguson as things stand. It's a squad game. Start Parrott, Ogbene and Azaz and have Ferguson on the bench in reserve because I'd be a lot happier seeing Ferguson coming on after an hour rather than Adam Idah.

Trequartista20
23/11/2025, 5:07 PM
Roma have only scored 12 goals in their last 11 league fixtures btw. So not a prolific team that serves up lots of chances. Ferguson gets nothing like the space that Parrott enjoys in the Eredivisie.

As an aside, that white Roma away shirt is lovely.

Didn't England likely weaken themselves with this mentality that Gerrard and Lampard had to be accommodated in the starting XI?

I think both should be played together again sometime just because I'd like to see what Ogbene could offer at RWB because Festy is absolutely woeful. God help us whenever Coleman decides to retire.

But I'd be trying that out in friendlies not competitive games. Unfortunately for Ferguson he just needs to be patient and take his chance when it next arrives like Parrott took his this November with Ferguson injured.

That's exactly what I was thinking. We don't need to accommodate them both. If one comes on after an hour for the other then that's fine - bit like Cascarino and Quinn back in the day.

Great to see Ferguson off the mark, though he's a long way to go yet to come close to challenging Parrott for the starting spot for me.
