Nothing on the Bazunu thread and he conceded 3...

Probably because he's been playing well all season? Or as they put in on the Southampton forum - "I think Baz has enough credit in the bank via his previous saves to be cut some slack about yesterday's non saves."

Hopefully Kelleher keeps playing well and we have two keepers playing regularly and don't need to analyze everything to death. Alisson will be back soon though?

Kelleher makes BBC team of the week

Chosen by Garth crooks. Here's his rationale (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/68277073):

Caoimhin Kelleher (Liverpool): Alisson was out of action due to illness and so Kelleher made a rare appearance for Liverpool and played particularly well. The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper made two excellent saves against Burnley and in Alisson fashion stayed on his feet both times and forced the striker to make a poor decision.

First he denied Zeki Amdouni, who was clean through on goal, and later David Datro Fofana. Both Burnley's strikers should have scored and would have done had it not been for Kelleher's reading of the situations. Burnley had enough chances to get something out of this game but blew it.

Probably. I saw the goals and none of them stood out as being as a result of errors. Two were deflected and another was a good shot. One of the deflected ones took a crazy loop up into the air and dropped into the net but was impossible read.

Some people spend time in his thread making out every goal he concedes is an error and a travesty to goalkeeping as a profession. Nice that he conceded 3 and the world didn't end.

There's no deflection on the first one in fairness? Looks like he was fairly weak for that one; went in under his arm. Others were a rocket and a horrible deflection alright.

Yep. I think we are at the stage where GK just isn't a huge worry anymore so people don't need to get too bothered by a bad game or over excited by a good one. Bazunu has had a few rocky patches and bounced back. He's still so young that I'm sure he will have a few more tough runs. Kelleher still needs to play regularly so we can see how he deals with the ups and downs a but more, but I doubt anyone would have an issue with him starting for Ireland in a game at this point.

It's not "an embarrassment of riches" situation but it's not "an embarrassment" either. We have good options. One or two of them may still turn out to be world class options. But they are solid already.

Enough to be worrying about everywhere else though!

i found it interesting in the analysis that Damien Delaney said he should stay at Liverpool for another few seasons. Basically a why would you want to leave. Kenny Cunningham on the other hand said he was 'good enough to start for the majority of the top half teams in the league and it would soon reach the point where he'd need to leave'

Getting on the Team of the week is good for his profile. Forest bidding 15 Million for him at the end of January sounds about the correct valuation for him at this stage but I can see why Liverpool wouldnt want to sell him. I think that is the 1st bid that we've really seen publicly for him so hopefully its a sign that come the summer there may be more.

He'll never really prove it until he does it though, will he?

I'll take Cunningham's side of that argument all day long

Delaneys argument for him to stay another few years would be fine if he was 20. At some point a footballer has to prove hes a footballer

I wonder will Allison move on this summer with kloop.moving and salah going, it does feel like it might be a time for a big pay move

Wouldn’t be sure that Salah or Alisson are off. Despite the Saudi money on offer, I think it’s probably less than 50-50.

I think I’m staying around for one more season if I’m Kelleher. He probably ends up playing 20-30 games this season. Allison is into his 30s - the injuries unlikely to get less as he gets older.

Also I’d want to play for Xabi Alonso for a season if he’s the new manager

he was poor v west ham in the league but he has been much better in the next 2 league apps. that save today in added time was outstanding.

Good, confidence building performances. Fifteen games this season and it's starting to show, although I think he should have flung himself to the left for Toney's follow-up as that was the part of the goal that was wide open

Sounds like Alisson is out for another month. Huge opportunity for Kelleher in a massive run of games for Liverpool.

What's the odds he gets injured himself now...

fantastic opportunity indeed. The only thing that is missing, in terms of the argument to dislodge Baz, is a body of evidence that he can produce the goods over a reasonably meaningful timeline. If he is doing well for Liverpool over the 6 weeks that Alison is out and Baz continues to perform as well as he has for Southampton, it is a pretty nice headache for Gus Poyet to have in his first few games.

Didnt think he was great for Luton's goal this evening, seemed to kinda dive the wrong way and it went off his leg and straight on Ogbene's head, think is distribution is fine but he'll have a run of games to fully show what he's made of....

Was at the game tonight. The goal was a bit of a weird one, he goes at it with his feet and i guess if it misses everyone, it's considered a good if somewhat unorthodox save. but considering what happened, i think kelleher would be a little disappointed.

thought it was a weaker day for his long distance distribution but he's still excellent with his feet.

he had two very good moments, one where he pounced at the feet of the attacker and another where he came and cleared up way off his line.

he did also have one where he was rounded, he came out and realised he wouldn't get there and then stopped but liverpool defenders did enough to cover and stop a shot getting. probably would have been considered an error if Luton had scored...

still, another 3 points with him starting (5 wins from 5 in the league this season) and another decent performance under his beltWhen it doesn't cost points this sort of stuff is judged a lot differently to when it does cost points.

It would have been a good one to save, but it didn't cost Liverpool. We will learn more from every game he plays.

At least 7 more games for Kelleher with Allison not expected back until after the international break in March ……

Chance to be a hero. Anyone remember Alex Manninger at Arsenal? He played a key role in Arsenal's title run-in in the late 90s when David Seaman was injured. 6 clean sheets in a row including in the title-clinching 1-0 win at Old Trafford. Career slid into obscurity afterwards though!

Hell of a save, possibly a double-save by Kelleher to stop what looked a sure goal from close range. Distribution and decision-making otherwise good as the two teams go into halftime scoreless.

Well fair play to him. A very, very good performance under real pressure. And a contender for man of the match, even if it goes to someone else — he probably was the main reason Liverpool won today.

Incredible from Kelleher. You’d have to imagine that’s the type of performance that opens eyes across England. After Van Dijk, you’d think man of the match. Probably made half a dozen good saves.

I think this run of games largely justifies Liverpool’s decision to keep Kelleher. They’ve won 5 of 5 with him in the league, they’re top of the league and he’s got a 6 pointer against Man City and a Merseyside Derby in the league coming up.

It’s also essentially the argument that some of us made for him staying. He was bound to eventually get these opportunities and games like the cup final today and the big league games are what could elevate him to genuine elite level.

Two years ago he won the League Cup and I don't think he played another game for Liverpool that season. This time he has another month coming up now to really build his reputation. March will be the biggest month of his career by a distance.

But he'll be dropped for Allison....

Clubs will definitely be taking him more seriously now which is brilliant but it's not like he wouldn't have had options before.

If anything, the good performances back up the argument that he should have moved on ages ago and shown what he can do.

Either way, it's great for Ireland to see him performing.

In fairness if he moved on he wouldn't have won 2 league Cup Medals at Wembley or ever got the chance to play games for a team at the top of the Premier league. Their is plenty of time to be a top flight keeper at an average top flight club
