Such admirable knowledge of the acting Gleeson clan for one from so far away.

what i find admirable is that most of your irish worldwide known actors had a huge crush and lifelong romance with this game, the beutiful game!!! , this gleeson family, the liam neeson, gabriel byrne, matthew broderick, colin farrell who usually comes down here, the guy from star trek and the van they all wanted to be football players , and many more, dont know about pierce brosnam though....and the cillian murphy fellow doesnt strike as someone who plays football he is a bookish, dont know about peter otoole but richard harris was a rugby man who did a movie about a footballer !!!

we dont have that in Argentina from our so called "serious actors" only from our comedians

the thing with this fellow is that he looks like the Brendan Gleeson kid, that is not very menacing at all, if he looks like father Brendan thats a goalkeeper then

Someone's taken Studs (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452866/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2) a little too literally...

Starts today against Shrewsbury. Not expecting a busy day for him, but it does mean that he's not absent through covid and should be in line to play Arsenal in midweek

Shay Given and John Hartson both of the opinion he should be knocking Klopps door down for a loan move. Strong defensive lineup from Liverpool but very inexperienced elsewhere so he might end up a bit busier than expected.

Not much he could do about the goal. Maybe a tiny bit flat footed if being hyper critical? But it was a good cross and finish. Cross came in too easily and it was the second time in a few minutes the same player was allowed to put in a great ball so full back maybe most at fault.

Bradley and Konate on the right side of the Liverpool defence look very vulnerable. Immediately after Bradley has the assist for the Liverpool equaliser Shrewsbury get another cross in from that side and it’s ruled out for a tight offside call. Wasn’t a lot Kelleher could have done again in fairness.

Unconvincing punch from a long throw and almost gets caught out with it coming back in, recovers quickly to make the save. Hasn’t really had a shot to save but Liverpool look very shaky defending crosses.

I don't know about the forum politics, but I can see Biesla's point. Don't get me wrong, he looks like a great prospect and it's brilliant to have an Irish player at a top club (like the old days) but it looks to me like Kelleher could do with being more aggressive/assertive. He could also tone down the acrobatics a bit and keep it simple. The level he is playing at, it's OK to subject him to criticism, especially if you want him to succeed in the long term, especially for Ireland.

Interesting that the stats from the game - 83% possession for Liverpool; 8 shots v 2 - don't really tie in with passinginterest's posts. Football is a strange game at times; is there any other sport really where you could see so little of the ball and yet be creating problems all the same? A rugby game with those possession stats would be an easy win for example.

It’s a strange game. Liverpool have their usual mad high line and they’re owning the ball but creating little. Shrewsbury have only had the ball in the Liverpool box maybe five or six times from crosses, but it looks dangerous every time. Kelleher has dealt well with a cross and a short back pass so far in the second half.

Usual assuredness on the ball in this half and he’s had to deal with at least one more dangerous cross. Game is still in the balance, he might have a big moment or two before the end the way it’s going.

It's because football is low scoring. You can have lots of possession and lots of chances, but don't score and the other crowd do from a corner and you're losing 0-1 all the same. Same surprise score by the weaker team in rugby just means it's now 21-7 or whatever.

Heart in mouth moment as he stood on the ball under a bit of pressure near his own 6 yard line. Wouldn’t have made much difference though as Liverpool had already got a third.

For sure. (I think it's also much easier to set up a quick counter-attack than in rugby too) And it's interesting that what's supposedly football's weakness (in America in particular) is really its strength.

Anyways, 4-1 now, and still 80%+ possession for Liverpool. That's not a strong Liverpool team - Morton, Dixon-Bonner, Gordon and Woltman all started, whoever they are; they're not even in the first-team squad listing on wikipedia - and it does highlight the gap between League One and the top of the Premier. Shrewsbury are only 8 points behind Portsmouth. I think in terms of right now, Kelleher is our top-ranking keeper, but he does need more game time, and of course Bazunu has three years on him.

Anyways, on to Arsenal on Thursday hopefully.

Yes was lucky. Overall he did fine. If only he played more games, then he wouldn’t be under the microscope so much with everyone nitpicking at everything! The concerning thing is that it would only take a couple of clangers like the one he almost had to end his Anfield career as he doesn’t exactly have much currency built up. Thats the life of a goalkeeper. That’s why I would much prefer him to be playing first team football anywhere for the rest of the season

That’s true alright, it would only take a couple of mistakes ( maybe even only one big one ) and the Liverpool “ “ faithful “ “ would soon be deciding that they had another Karius on their hands ! ! Maybe thats why it is very hard for goalkeepers or any young home grown players to make it at these clubs. And of course a goalkeeper, because of the position he plays is in that extra bit of danger.

He's played 3 of the last 4 Liverpool first team games, and impressed to such an extent, that they're now nitpicking over mistakes "nearly" made.

He got the ball, slipped, and still cleared it away. No massive issue to talk about. Compare him to his rival at Portsmouth, who when he loses possession, it's in the net. Proper mistakes that lose his team matches. Such are the "benefits" of playing every week.

Edit - mypost deleted his comment complaining that people are commenting on a mistake Kelleher made, comparing it to Bazunu whose mistakes regularly (very regularly?) cost his club games. Something not grounded in fact and totally petty.

General consensus is that both are playing very well.

Every goalkeeper makes mistakes, and are often highlighted by the result of a game. Bazunu's kept clean sheets in five of his last eight games. Can you provide evidence of what led to the goals in the other three?

Yeah, I think the main problem is the lack of any engagement with the discussion. So "When he loses possession, it's in the net" simply isn't true, as has already been pointed out. But it gets regurgitated here again.

I think most of us, even when our views differ on players (and they will differ of course) at least engage with the points made by others and that's what leads to interesting discussion. But mypost bypasses all that and lives in his own little world of half-truths and dodgy facts

We in Southamerica are old school about football, that means we like rough looking players in certain positions. Happens everywhere actually the trash talk, the KIRICOCHO myth for bad luck. This isnt a joke. For instance, England had a tough defender named Butcher, he was a nasty dirty player. It is the psicological path of football in our zone. Check Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay they are warriors at the back. This point of view comes from the underage teams. Is not just a coincidence that Messi made the grade in football in Barcelona after being rejected by at least 10 important teams. If Messi was made we owe it to luck, his mother and dad and Messi but he is not there because of Argentina system, at the time he was considered too nice, too fragile, too middle class to be a footballer. We are still having players because of the competition in underage levels but not for structure.

I am gonna give you an old true situación 40 years ago in Japan about wc winner Cesar Menotti and the underage team vs Germany in wc under20 with Maradona in Japan in 1979

The gish of Biesla’s posts about presence have merit; Kelleher doesn’t “fill out” the goals as well as Bazunu and Travers. That however wouldn’t be the main concern with Kelleher for me, I think he has difficulties dealing with balls above shoulder height and especially balls that are moving across his body. As good as he was against Chelsea, yesterday was disappointing as it wasn’t a performance to challenge Allison’s status as first choice.

Kelleher looks bigger that Bazuna to me ~ ~ Ok, he could Schmeichel out (fill out ) a bit. Jeez when ya look back Schmeichel used to get away with a fair bit of physical like intimidation back in the day ~ entertaining though ~ would ya get away with that stuff today ?

Every goalkeeper makes mistakes here and there. But when you are established and have a catalogue of good saves behind you, you can get away with these mistakes and call them once off mishaps. Kelleher doesn’t have that standing yet and hence the current scrutiny/ nit-picking of everything he does. From an Irish perspective, it would be preferable for Kelleher to play week in, week out. If he is going to do that at Liverpool, he’ll need to produce near faultless performances when given the chance to challenge Allison standing as first choice. He didn’t do that yesterday.

My online research reveals that Bazunu (note correct spellling) is 1cm taller (189 vs 188 cm), but then again Christy Pym had various different heights attributed to him online.

Bazunu looks like he's of a bigger build. He's got really big shoulders on him.

Context was "filling the goal" though. Bazunu has made some big 1-on-1 saves for us. Travers made a good one in Belgrade. I haven't really seen what Kelleher is capable of here. The goal he conceded at Chelsea was in a situation that very much favoured the attacker.

ifk101
10/01/2022, 12:49 PM
Just on that Chelsea goal, and not saying he should be doing better, but his stance is narrow - knees locked together, hands low down - giving the attacker more of the goals to shoot at. I think Bazunu and Travers would have a different body shape, fill out the goals more :-), in the same situation.

Edit. Bazunu had a somewhat similar one on one situation to Kelleher in the home game against Azerbaijan to stop them going 2 up. Bazunu makes himself bigger compared to Kelleher - his legs are spread (save ultimately made with his foot) and his anticipation stance is more bulked.

If Kelleher races out of the goal, he gets lobbed. If he doesn't lock his knees, the shot goes through his legs. Either way, it's still a goal. It was a quality goal by a quality player at the highest level of club football in England. There was little Kelleher could have done to prevent it, so other more experienced teammates were largely held responsible.

We all did. Most of us said he was at risk of being dropped for club and country level if he didn't bounce back quickly and raise his game. A quick glance over any of the multiple threads we have on both players would show you that. Since then he's been superb and leads the division in clean sheets having only played 21 of the 24 games so far so the questions we were asking have been answered.

Those two games were in October, he's played 13 games since then (2 for Ireland, 11 for Portsmouth), keeping nine clean sheets (v Bolton, Harrow, Lincoln, Gillingham, Sheffield Wednesday, Morecambe, and Cambridge for Portsmouth, V Portugal and Luxembourg for Ireland), and hasn't conceded more than once in a game since Accrington scored twice on Saturday, 23rd October.

Anyone who's watched him since then would say he's improved since those two games against Rotherham and Ipswich in October.
