I'm watching this while trying to entertain my 8 month old daughter, which is distracting my attention somewhat, but I haven't even been able to work out what formation this is

It is Stan like disorganised stuff. Cox switched swings when he was just starting to make some good play on the left.

Whelan - rubbish defending. Under most managers that would be his final, final strike. Nailed on to start against Germany...

Agree with you Colbert, McGeady's the only one on the team that looks like he can play football.

Relax, they scored from a set piece, it happens!

Mr Trapattoni knows what he's doing, so get off his back.

In Trapp we trust!
Get back on the pitch, Sean.

Anyone who defends this rubbish is mentally unstable. Change the players and the system, at least have an alternative. But hey he got us to euros and should only be judged on results.

I'll support anyone in a green shirt but Ward is so limited it's unreal. He genuinely seems frightened to have the ball. All he's done is hoof. What is it with Trap's insistance in playing strikers on the wing? Cox has barely seen the ball and when he has, has not been able to do anything with it.

Well this is it. It was glaringly obvious I'm the Euros how culpable he was but this is a scandal of a performance.

In fairness to Irish football this clueless old buffer should stop swindling the FAI out of a fortune and get his coat now.

IN fairness to Trap, we are working on the "law of average" now - great

There were shades of Roy Keane v Cyprus as McCarthy burst into the box there, but then he tripped over his own feet.

McGeady did very well there to beat his man and get the cross in down the left wing. I'm not sure why McClean hasn't been put on the other wing yet. We need to get the ball into the box.

Colbert Report

Robbie Keane has only touched the ball once in the entire match according to the GOL TV commentator here in Canada.

McGeady by far our livliest player today.

McGeady has the defenders in knots.

Another good cross from McGeady. Just a matter of time now before someone gets on the end of it. Terrible crossing from Ward, God he's woeful.

Another wonderful cross from McGeady. We could have had a penalty there.

Need to keep feeding McGeady the ball. He has the defender in bits.

Diarmo
07/09/2012, 5:21 PM
These guys have done their homework on us, make no mistake. They've dealt with out crosses so far, knowing full well there's not a chance anything's going to come through the centre.

Colbert Report
07/09/2012, 5:22 PM
Walters is a good player but he's not a right winger. This is very frustrating to watch. I love Trap but surely McClean would do a better job running at the full back and taking a defender or two to that side of the pitch, allowing McGeady to have a bit more time on the ball before he gets closed down on the opposite flank?

Would not be hard tbh. We are so bloody predictable in every match we play

Ward should be subbed off for a real professional footballer. Look at that one-two he just tried to play with McGeady. Hit it in the air straight to the Kazakh defender.

Can't understand the hysteria about all of this. According to the Irish "meeja" Kazakhstan are no-hopers, yet they don't know anything about the players, team etc. Pete Mahon spoke well of the league and players, even the US commentator is more clued in than the Irish journos. Can't help but feel this is playing into the hands of the anti-O'Brien group who are loving Ireland not winning. Kazakhstan are playing their first match in qualifying, so they're up for it, Ireland are in transition and without some players, and playing away from home. Yet still we're told to expect a walk over.

In fairness Spud, have a look at Kazakhstans results. Those on their own are enough to suggest an irish victory was the likely result tonight. And I don't think anyone who knows anything (about this Irish team) was expecting a walkover.

It's not just that we should win, it's just the manner of our potential defeat is quite embarrassing. There's not even the rotten luck of the Kerr displays (Israel etc.) We've barely created any clear-cut chances. It's just "bang it into the box" and hope something happens.

Bookies regularly make mistakes. If Ireland were as hot for the win as all that it would have been far shorter. Lots of hopeful punters sticking money lowered the odds. Watched N. Ireland lash into Russia and deserved a point, Russians were not bad but took the win for granted. Can't do it ever.

Long is coming on now, presumably for Walters.

edit: as Ronnie Whelan points out, that's three centre forwards we've had on the wing.

Colbert Report
07/09/2012, 5:35 PM
There's no breaking these guys down, not with nine men across the box like that. Twenty minutes to go in the match and we all know that we won't score. Even Keane isn't protesting that much after being locked in a bear-hug by the Kazakh defender.

Spudulika

SkStu - the Kazakhs are building for the future, have a very good national youth development program and facilities, we don't, we use facilities in the UK and it's sub-standard coaching. Agree that anyone who knows about football didn't expect a walkover, but the meeja portrayal (with their complete ignorance of the opposition) is letting down the public. In regards to those who don't follow football - read eekers above :-)

Diarmo - it's like some of the back Jack displays, against Israel there was the cheating scum keeper, and it's sickening to see the players not perform as they should. But the skill base for the Irish players is so low compared to the opposition it's frightening.

Actually go back further its W3 D1 L17
The 3 wins are Andorra home and away, and Azerbaijan (http://www.soccerway.com/teams/azerbaijan/azerbaijan/). The Draw was a 0-0 at home to an Austrian team that mathematically couldn't qualify for the Euros on the last round of the qualifiers.
