Interesting line about the lack of support from the National League. How many clubs is that Roddy has gotton rid of? Sad day for the Mons fans. Being there know the feeling!

That's awful news. They seemed to be one of the best run clubs around for so long, always living within their means despite the obvious lack of supporters, they were developing excellent young players too. Did Roddy play a role in leading them into an unsustainable state? Another sad day for the League of Ireland.

Can't believe things were that bad up there.

Not many people have a bad word to say about the club.

Sad day for Mons and the League

This is nothing to do with Roddy or the squad.

A wage increase would have happened when we went into the premier regardless of who was manager. Again it is not Roddy or the Squad that are at fault and they have been very supportive and understanding throughout our recent difficult times.

Timing is something i was looking at too....FAI have a word so that it would be the same day as the Ireland game i wonder.

Not that it would get much coverage anyway but will get even less now with people writing about the "Best fans in the world" and the pointless match.

I must say its not that surprising, we had all wondered how they were surviving on the crowds they were getting, even when they were relatively successful over the past few seasons, with high first division finishes and a couple of decent cup runs under Mick Cooke (semi of FAI cup and League cup final I believe?) their crowds were still poor even by LOI standards.

Credit to them for keeping the show on the road as long as they did, and my heart goes out to those fans they did have, I can't imagine what they are feeling now.

Of course John Delaney will trumpet Carlsbergs "Probably the Best Fans in the World"™ tonight while our football clubs are dying a slow death as he takes more money out of Irish football than the National Champions and his Senior Manager takes something like 20 times what our Champions get (is he still on 2m?)

Is that the confirmed protocol then? All of their previous results are nullified? I mean, I presume that would be the case. And what about the relegation structure? And will the FAI now promote an extra team from below?

Very saddened to hear the news, housemate from Monaghan is pretty down (though not suprised).

Relegation/Promotion could just stay the same its just whoever wins the first will not be replaced by someone coming down.

Surely it will be time to put the league together now or it will be a 7 team First Division next season......Unless Cobh or someone are around.

Ah crap.

Always terrible news to hear of something like this. I know that a lack of support was a big part of their problem, but there are a number of people feeling really shattered right now. There are few clubs that haven't been perilously close to this situation themselves.

How fitting that at the same time the FAI are on the pi$$ in Poland, a member club of the league they've failed to nurture has died of starvation.

Disappointed to hear this news as I always loved by trips to Monaghan. Always wondered how they survived though and it's a shame the people of Monaghan couldn't support them.

Hard to know what the FAI do now (from start of next season). We now only have 19 senior clubs in the country. Is it time to look at a 16 or 18 team LOI which would mean letting at least one more LOI club disappear. Might be the only way forward.

Are Monaghan the only one likely to disappear between now and the start of next season. Very worrying news coming from the likes of Dundalk as well.

Wouldn't be surprised if we took on one or two of their players. We're considering bringing in a couple in the window I believe. Sincere sympathies to all Mons fans though, we've sailed close to the wind ourselves in previous years.

Ah come on now - no budget increases are forced. Not necessarily blaming shoddy or the squad, but it's completely ridiculous to pull out mid season, based on budget issues (which it appears to be). So sympathy for the fans, but got to say I'm also pretty angry at the moment as well.

Of course, shows the complete shambles that is licencing yet again. How can a club run out of money mid season, after having passed the financial criteria? Complete joke. But still, once Delaney gets the pints in/ losses his shoes, isn't he great altogether.

Great people trying to spend their lives doing something constructive for their sport and region. Sadly they come from a Country of event junkies and bandwagon jumpers. When England play there next match there will be a nearby pub with locals booing England, but wearing a Chelsea, Man U , Liverpool top- and not caring that their local club has gone from the league . Why do we bother! Not sure I can listen to the fields of Athenry if it starts up tonight.

Last time this happened mid-season was Dublin City in '06. All results were expunged: http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5281

I remember well cos it cost us points on Shels and Derry I think that year.
