When will the draw take place for the 2012 EA Sports Cup and is there any word on what teams will be involved?

Last year it was made on 3rd March with ties to be played by Monday 28th.

This year ties are to be played by Monday 26th, so I'd imagine it'll be the first week in March again for the draw.

I would again assume that the earlier rounds would be regionalised like in previous yrs..

Was it regionalised last year? http://extratime.ie/fixtures/played/102/2011/

Yes, both rounds before the QFs, so Waterford and Limerick defeated Tralee and Kerry respectively, before then playing each other. Similarly, Galway lost in round one, and Sligo defeated their conquerors in round two.

So what you're saying is that Sligo conquered Cockhill?

Yeah but how hard was it really? Word has it, when they leave the comfort of familiar surroundings Cockhill become a bit of a soft touch.

"Soft Cocks come up short in Sligo" I can see that headline alright.

Going by the rumours on the Paul Cook thread, we could be seeing headlines like 'Dicks inpires Sligo to take out Plucky Cocks'

I hope the rejected A Championship clubs take part. Cobh, Tralee, Carlow, Gust, Fanad. Makes the tournament more intresting. How i remember Tralee away on a Tuesday night lol.

Mr A

I'm not sure what they would add, considering some of them don't have senior sides at the moment. Would there really be any point in GUST U19s entering for instance?

GUST won't be entering a team in the EA Sports Cup

I'd imagine Cobh and Tralee at least, perhaps Fanad and Carlow also, would welcome the extra competition, and there's been a long tradition of non-League involvement in the League Cup.

Mr A

Maybe they would- certainly Fanad would have no problem entering. But I wondering what level the others have been left playing at and whether brief the step up to senior level would be useful or indeed welcome.

Fanad will be in either way as the Ulster Senior League champions.

Does anyone know how the new format for the FAI Cup will work - the League teams are starting in the Second Round, but will the ex-A Championship teams still be included in this season's First Round.

Does not compute.

I don't like the League Cup. It seems so superfluous in this day and age.

So, at a guess, the draw for this on MNS by any chance?

The Lilywhites
04/03/2012, 6:26 PM
Don't think they showed this early of a round on MNS before. Draw should be on this week though.

FAI Cup draw is on 6th March (Tuesday). Maybe both cups drawn in one night?

Deleting this - information now on FAI Cup thread.

I haven't heard any suggestion that the League Cup would be drawn tomorrow - I'd be very surprised.

I think I saw a date mentioned somewhere, but I can't find it and I can't remember where.

6 games tonight....

Cork City - Wexford Youths 7:45 p.m.
Waterford United - U.C.D 7:45 p.m.
Monaghan United - Fanad United 7:45 p.m.
Athlone Town - Drogheda United 7:45 p.m.
Finn Harps - Mayo League 7:45 p.m.
Shelbourne - Mervue United 8 p.m.

I'm tempted to have a punt on Monaghan as their odds are rising hugely from 2/5 opening odds to 4/6 and better now.
Roddy has said he will make changes but surely they can account for an out of season Fanad?
Any team news on either team hugely appreciated!

Mr A

Strange that that has moved so much.. but then LOI markets don't take a lot of money to influence. Monaghan look very good value at that price.

When does Fanad's season start?

I believe it starts April the 8th with the Ulster Senior League, League cup first round.

Roddy on tonight's game:
Monday’s game against Fanad United will give us a rest from the pressures of the Premier. Fanad are an excellent Intermediate side and are the dominant force in the Ulster Senior League. There is a magic to cup ties and are famous shocks, I don’t want to be included in such statistics and for that reason I will not be underestimating Fanad. However I hope to take the opportunity of giving some of the players who haven’t featured for us so far this season a chance. It would be nice to progress in the Cup but or main priority this season is to maintain our hard earned Premier Division status.

Fanad lost 2-0 to Salthill last season at same stage.

Have no idea to be honest. Supposedly Harps are wasting a lot of chances. Couldn't make the game tonight, but from reports it's a walk in the park really.
Convey was taken off in the 78th minute.

In other news, Cork just scored their 5th.
