It was in Tallaght. Why would it have been in Tolka?
Think about it.

Thought rovers were, surprisingly, very naive, wrt the conditions, at the start of the second half. Felt that if Derry could get a second then a proper hammering would be on.
Took them 20 mins, and were already 2-0 down, before they copped on. Ironic then that the third came just as they looked like they might claw their way back into it.
On the peno I think refjohn has called it right, unfortunately he's probably in the minority that would see it as only a yellow.

What because one team arent interested it's dead. Thats their loss. THink its a great wee competition meself.
The competition died when they started changing the format years ago. After that, you couldn't keep up with all the changes year after year, and then interest is lost.
It's a competition run mainly for the benefit of the NI teams, but they can't compete. While the LOI clubs often field reserve teams, and with the expense involved, the crowds don't want to know.

How so? While I would be in favour of an all island league I think the Setanta Cup is a pain in the ass.

This hasnt been raised in a while!!! Yes i agree with a all island league too but another option is merge the LOI league cup and the IL league cup so that the final 8 is all island and up till that stage is regionalised. I don't think there is much interest in the league cup in either country anyway so by merging all these competitions it may help a little, i don't expect miracles.

While the constant changes haven't been helpful, I think this year's iteration is by far the best format. Like the competition and would love it to keep going in it's current less obtrusive, more meaningful guise.

Two legged format is a load of pox. They should switch to a single leg format, have the games on weekends, or just scrap the competition altogether.

Don't have a problem with two legs personally, but even if I did it's a mere drop in the gripe ocean compared to the round robin group format.
A (mostly) open draw cup knockout, even over two legs, is far more preferable and enjoyable imo.

Honestly, to make this a little more successful, I think this competition needs to be opened up to Wales, Scotland and England. Home Nations Cup sort of idea.
If the likes of Sky Sports picked up on it, with the League winners and 2 cup winners from each nation Scotland, Rep. Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland with something like Championship winners and League cup and FA Cup winners from England, there would be huge interest in such a competition.
It's not working as it is, and needs to be changed.

:o republic of Ireland!
You seriously think that this would happen? Apart from the EPL teams (which only want lucrative Asian friendlies these days), Bangor and Kilmarnock and the rest are not really going to add thousands to the gate

Great idea but it will never happen, clubs complain about travel costs as it is
Scrap both league cups, have an all Ireland league cup, have early rounds in late Aug, Sept & Oct. have later rounds in March, April & have Final in May

No, I don't think it would happen, nor would it even be suggested at the right levels, all I'm saying is, if this competition is to go forward, then it's the only way it will go forward.

No, because overall the attendances for the competition are terrible. Besides the Linfield/Derry games, I can't think of another match that was up around a League attedance level.
I'm a big fan of the competition, but it seems the general LOI attending fan is not... Monday night fixtures may be a contributing factor as well.
Either way, unless attendances improve. I can't see a long-term future for the Competition.

Even Linfield - Derry had awfully disappointing attendances ger121. The only club coming out of this competition with reasonable attendances is Sligo.
Crowds have always been poor in this competition, have they not?
Attendances couldn't be the main driving force behind why they bother with it year after year.

Not sure what you meant there Nigel?
Our away game at Windsor had just short of 2,000 and our home game was around the 4,000.
I'm estimating our game V rvrs next week will have well above 2,000 maybe even reaching the 3,000 and if it's a Derry V Crues final I think that Windsor will be at almost capacity IE:14,000
So as for Derry fans....no the comp aint dead.
Strange though that it's only after last night that rvrs fans think it's dead. They didn't think that last season! lol

The timing was changed to suit the NI season initially. Then the group phase was abandoned altogether so the NI teams might win a knockout tie. When that failed, they were guaranteed the final up there if one of them made it. None of the "travelling to Ireland" lark to put up with.
Even after those concessions, they're still uncompetitive.

Thats what i am saying too. Regionalise early rounds to cut down on costs.
Ten men or not Rovers were played off the pitch by a very young Derry City team. Unfortunately nowadays players and supporters find it very difficult to accept defeat gracefully. As for no interest in the competition, if Shamrock Rovers reach the final Tallaght will be packed.

And yet and all the average age of the side would compare favourably with the 'young and inexperienced' team harps put out at the weekend :p

But we're not claiming to have a young team now ;P A young backline yes, whole team, no. For once we have a bit of experience.

So if you have a young back line and, despite the experience you listed above, the average age of the (Derry and Harps) teams from the preceding matches was comparable. Then it must follow that we had some young players too.
And when you consider that some of the players missing (Grecean, Higgins, Morrison and Patterson) are similarly 'experienced' then you must concede that it was a 'very young' Derry team is perfectly cromulent conclusion. Even if you must qualify it with a relatively. :p

I personally think if Linfield put their mind to it, they'd prove a match for the best you have to offer, dont think any other IL side have anything like the resources to be competitive though.
As for not "travelling to Ireland", IL teams have reached 3 of the 6 finals so far, one of those was in Belfast, one in Dublin and one in Cork....

The current system is grand, no reason to change it. With the only other two-legged games coming in European qualifiers, it's not bad to play the games over that format.

Ya man, they do.
... ... he was disappointed they didn’t notch another goal or two but said it was more important for Richard Brush to keep a clean sheet as away goals count for double in the cup.
