you've got to be careful hanging around all these playgrounds Stutts.as they say in gladstone park 'no adults unaccompanied by kids'

rathfarnham is far from a GAA stronghold.more so soccer way more so rugby so that has to be a good thing.I brought my own kids Paul, just to clarify :)

Just 'cos Ros lost their crown doesn't mean you have to be narky 3 days on.

Connor Smith and Joseph Shaughnessy on for Conor Murphy and Derrick Williams now. Just over five minutes to go.

3-1 to the Czechs in the other game. Goal from Vojtěch Hadaščok. Romania haven't been great at the back.

With 3 players in the book now for Ireland (Doherty, Carruthers, Hendrick), what are the rules for this tournament? Two yellows in the group stages and you miss the next game?

According to the official regulations (http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/Regulations/competitions/Regulations/01/50/66/89/1506689_DOWNLOAD.pdf):

Yellow and red cards

20.03 A player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next match in the same category of competition, unless there is evidence of an obvious mistake by the referee. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment.

20.04 In the case of repeated cautions in different matches, the offending player is suspended for one match in the same competition after the second and fourth caution, as well as after any subsequent cautions.

20.05 Single yellow cards that have not resulted in a suspension expire on completion of the elite round and are not carried forward to the final round.

20.06 In the final round, single yellow cards that have not resulted in a suspension expire on completion of the group phase and are not carried forward to the semi-finals.

20.07 Cautions and pending yellow-card suspensions expire on completion of the competition.

Looks like single cards won't be carried over although a suspension will if, say, a player was to receive a second card in the final group game.

Short corner crossed in according to our man :D

UEFA updates... :(

Kane Ferdinand on now, although I see he's become simply Kane McGovern on the UEFA site now.

That 3rd Czech goal was desperate. How could they not see the last striker. Brutal.
Upstairs sorting out new music, will ye give me a heads up if our game has highlights on Eurosport.

Someone said there are to be highlights after the Romania-Czech game, although I dunno if they'll be on Eurosport 1 or 2. That game was on 2 and just finished 3-1.

Our game has finally finished 2-1 after five minutes of stoppage time. Great start to the tournament.

Romania were very poor at the back against the Czechs. Would be hopeful of something against them and you'd have to be confident of getting out of the group after a victorious start.

So where does Anthony O'Connor play position wise? He's a defender at Blackburn right? Was he playing in defense tonight?

Plays at centre-back. Was playing there this evening. Just up for the corners.

Edit: Interestingly, he mightn't have been playing had Shane Duffy or Sean McGinty been in the squad.

Right, so if Doherty, Carruthers or Hendrick get booked in the second or third game, they will miss the next game. But all yellows expire after the third game.

Right, so if Doherty, Carruthers or Hendrick get booked in the second or third game, they will miss the next game. But all yellows expire after the third game.

Seems to be it, by my reckoning.

Just looking at the stats, we did commit quite a lot of fouls. We committed 22 to Greece's 11. Romania have three players on yellows as well from their game against the Czechs. They'll miss their game against us if they happen to pick up a second against Greece on Saturday.

Edit: Just to clarify, single yellows expire after the third game. If a player picks up a second yellow in the third game, for example, it seems to be that a one-game suspension will carry through to the semi-final.

Sometimes I think my cup is permanently half empty but.......

by the sound of things (on the text commentary) we were giving it our all in the physical sense while the Greeks had the technical advantage in the game?

As glad as I am that we've won, it is hard to escape the fact that those lads will grow up to be physical players rather than ones who can retain the ball and create opportunities (which as we all know is what's missing from Trap's senior team).

Is that a fair assessment? Maybe someone who saw the game could elaborate?

faigirl

I saw the game and that is not a fair assessment, Ireland were the better team, physically and technically, apart from the last 15 minutes Ireland dominated.

UEFA match report here: http://www.uefa.com/under19/matches/season=2011/round=2000078/match=2008063/postmatch/report/index.html#oconnor+double+earns+ireland+against+gr eece

The Republic of Ireland opened their UEFA European Under-19 Championship Group A campaign with a 2-1 victory against Greece.

Ireland reached the finals thanks to an elite-round win against Italy and they were celebrating again after just two minutes had elapsed in Buftea, Anthony O'Connor smartly volleying in Sean Murray's corner from the right. Giorgos Katidis drew Greece level three minutes later, but O'Connor struck again early in the second half to wrap up maximum points.

...

Having enjoyed a lightning start to the opening period, Paul Doolin's team hit the front six minutes after the interval. Murray's quick corner to Samir Carruthers allowed the Aston Villa FC player to hit a cross to the far post where O'Connor was again well-placed to knock in.

First goal wasn't a header at all, it seems. Maybe not even the second, depending on what it means to "knock" it in.

Cup half full is now a serious problem for most Ireland fans, we have just beaten Greece and given ourselves a good chance of making the semi finals and all the focus on here is on the fouls that were committed.

The number of fouls committed was just one of the many things I was focusing on. It's a side-issue considering we won, but still not one worth sweeping under the carpet completely if suspensions come back to haunt us. As for the victory, I'm delighted with it. :)

Match stats from UEFA (http://www.uefa.com/under19/matches/season=2011/round=2000078/match=2008063/postmatch/statistics/index.html), although no possession stat:

Greece Republic of Ireland
1 Goals scored 2
4 Attempts on target 5
9 Attempts off target 3
5 Corners 6
11 Fouls committed 22
3 Yellow cards 3
0 Red cards 0

Greece had a lot of attempts off-target. Were they resorting to shooting from long range?

33 fouls in a match isn't much. 22 fouls conceded is relatively normal, no?

I suppose it's not wildly unusual or anything, although we are the worst offenders after the first round of games. I guess someone has to be. There were 26 fouls in each of the other two games.

For what it's worth, the number of fouls (and bookings) per team so far:

Ireland: 22 (3 bookings)
Serbia: 15 (2 bookings)
Czech Republic: 14 (2 bookings)
Romania: 12 (3 bookings)
Greece: 11 (3 bookings)
Turkey: 11 (1 booking)

Hadn't seen this before hand, by the way, but there are squad profiles on the FAI site: http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=101917&catid=4&Itemid=12

Sean McDermott, the sub goalie, was born in Norway to a Donegal father. The whole country is well represented with players from Monaghan, Dublin, Waterford, Kerry, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Westmeath all included. That's pretty good going considering the FAI have that Dublin bias Roy Keane and Stephen Ireland always go on about...

Great result and sets them up nicely for the rest of the group. Avoid defeat on Sat and they would almost be go through. Good to see the result getting some press on the sports bulletins. Of course no chance RTE will show any of the tournament unless they get to the final.

Goals from the Romania-Czech Republic game and the Spain-Belgium one that was postponed: http://www.101greatgoals.com/euro-u19s-spain-belgium-called-off-czech-republic-beat-romania/99507/

Can't see the goals from our game online anywhere. Has anyone seen them?

A victory over the Czechs would secure qualification for the semi-finals, although not necessarily top-spot if Romania were to beat both ourselves and Greece. If Romania slip up in either game though, we'd finish top. I'd consider it unlikely that Romania will do much though. You'll see how poor they are at the back from the goals they conceded last night. Plenty of weakness to exploit from set-pieces, which we've obviously worked on. Their goal against the Czechs was also a bit of a fluke.

Romania looked shocking at the back. Czechs played some really lovely passing football and look very dangerous.

Ridiculous we can't see the goals from last night anywhere. Didn't show them on Eurosport news. Maybe the 6.01 on RTE? I mean, they practically had round the clock reports from the U-17 girls tournament in Trinidad. Not that I'm saying they shouldn't have but an U-19 team in a major tournament should be a big deal. Considering most of us are gasping for live soccer at this time of year, I'm surprised it wasn't worth their while showing the games live really...

DannyInvincible
21/07/2011, 1:51 PM
I watched the 9 o'clock news last night expecting some highlights, or at least a report, but they didn't even have a sports round-up. Do they drop the sports round-up for the Summer or do they just not bother with a sports round-up any longer?

I saw that, the point as I should have realised you wouldn't get is, does he turn into another Jonathan Douglas.....;) Get with it, keep the focus, I won't put a question mark beside the "get with it" either to confuse the situation further :D

When else have we worn all-green? Iran away in 2001? We actually lost that game 1-0, even though we qualified for the World Cup finals on aggregate. And Slovakia away last year? I was disappointed we hadn't taken all three points after that game. I don't think I share the same fondness for the all-green.
