Scored a fine goal today for Wolves. Not sure what he did to offend O'Neill. The goal was a fine finish on his left leg, just to remind us he can play left back also.

I don't think it's necessarily that O'Neill has anything against him, just that Cyrus Christie's career was in the ascendancy when O'Neill was looking for a back-up for Coleman, while Doherty was not yet established. And as Christie has done well for us (and is still playing at the same level as Doherty), O'Neill's been reluctant to change mid-stream. However, I think at this point that Doherty deserves a shot to prove himself over the next twelve months.

Do you think Christie has done well for us? Overall, I don't. Any home match he's played he has worried me (Serbia, Austria, Wales when he came in, Denmark).
I'm also referring to Doherty's exlusion from competitive squads (up until Denmark) and his lack of a friendly cap.

Overall I don’t think Christie has done too bad for us . Doherty deserved some chances and it is a bit of a mystery why he never got them .

Don't think Doherty has really done anything to annoy O'Neill. He was never going to replace Coleman when he was available. When Coleman was injured against Wales, Christie had established himself in the squad, had already scored (I know, it was Gibraltar, but still a goal) and scored again against Uruguay in June when Doherty was unavailable. There was no friendly for the management to give Doherty a chance in August, and he was never going to be thrown in at the deep end in any of the games at the end of year, except maybe Moldova. It's just unfortunate timing really.

Got the only goal against Ipswich today - with Wolves looking on course for promotion, Doherty must surely be given the opportunity to impress in March

Particularly with Christie not featuring as regularly at Boro under Pulis. Doherty really can't be over-looked anymore.

Why would you think that? A player at the top of his game who is on an upward curve towards the Premier League and who can play a bit of football. Has all the ingredients to make Martin look elsewhere. No, in all honesty, he should get a shout for the March friendly along with Declan Rice.

Would be nice to see Doherty, Rice and Cunningham blooded in defence. Throw them in alongside Duffy and you have a back 4 aged 26, 19, 27 and 26.

I think we should be more adventurous and have a good look at Rice in mid field, we have a full premier league back 4 already.

There might well be value in that now we have another long term McCarthy shaped gap to fill in there particularly.

"It's your dream to play for your country. I want to be in every squad I possibly can be.".
He doesn't even say "my" country. And he wants to be in every squad. What a self-absorbed mercenary.
Or maybe I just need counselling.

Sorry lads, I was joking. TOWK used to call Richard Keogh for saying similar, citing wanting to play all the time as evidence of entitlement. In my mind it was more like evidence of delusion :)

It's very silly. He's only playing in the PL a wet week. Christie has earned a lot of goodwill with MON. We all know how good Coleman is.
Personally, I'd fancy us playing 3-5-2 with Doherty at wing back and Coleman in beside Duffy and Clark/Long. But this won't do him any favours.

I think too much is being read into what he said. Doherty should be in the team, his face fits how I think we could be playing. The fact that our players play worse for us than they do at a (higher) club level reflects on the management of the team. I'd more suspect that players in the team are being asked to play a game that they are not being coached properly to play and therefore they look worse when it looks shapeless.

The Sunday Indo framed the Doherty interview as a story on the basis that he could claim for the Netherlands as his mother is Dutch and he hasnt okayed competitively for us. Christ.

Special attention on MOTD2 tonight for his performance.
Nice problem for MON to have. He’s not short of problems, not many nice ones though

Matt Doherty is playing too well . He needs to slip in to mediocrity or below . Roy can indulge himself and Martin can recount the long ago good old days without the inconvenience of Irish Players playing well .

I understand his frustration completely, he should have been given a lot more game time by now, but performances like yesterday is the way to heap pressure on O'Neill to pick him, not little digs via the media.

I never knew Matt Doherty was eligible for Holland (Dutch mum). Looking at their current squad - he'd probably get a game if he keeps going the way he is.

17/09/2018, 2:17 PM
Now that would be funny, if Doherty went off and played for Holland. He dismissed it previously as being if i cant get into ireland whats the point in trying holland as though they are better.
Interesting to see what oneill would do , he would probably do his softly softly approach like in the media. It would be very funny actually. "we cant guarantee players playing time, they have to want to play for us", "we'll have a word with Matt and find out his intentions" "but as i say the player has to want to play for us".
Stuttgart88
17/09/2018, 5:17 PM
This would be a simple one. He'll be in the next squad as he's a fixture now and MON just needs to cap him for a few mins without losing face. I'd attribute zero chance to Matt going Dutch.

Another goal today and Man of the Match performance according to the BBC. Involved in 3 goals now in the last 4 games, with two previous assists.
Has come on leaps and bounds under Nuno, voted for this month’s fans player of the month and recognised widely by fans as one of the Players of the Season so far.
Absolute travesty that he has been denied by O’Neill to date. Heard his reasoning was that he wants Doherty to run in straight lines, rather than cut inside and one-two. Playing more as a winger in a 3-4-3 (a system that would suit our current personnel with an abundance of centre halves and more wingers than strikers playing off the lone front man). Would love to see him as a winger working in tandem with Coleman if we are going to persist with a 4-4-2. Think they’d overlap brilliantly.

Two good articles here on Doherty’s rise this season. Has to play based upon form - tragic waste of a very good player to date.

Matt Doherty's goal is the fifth Premier League goal scored by an Irish player this season, more than scored at this point in the last two seasons - four in 2016/17 and three in 2017/18

Something wrong if he doesn't start against Denmark.
He has the ability to run at a defence and he can defend a bit also.
Has a bit more about him that does Christie.

Christie actually put in some of Fulham’s most dangerous crosses and was involved in some of their better periods of play. Just for the sake of balance. I’d pick Doherty first myself.

Dancing with Wolves and their three unheralded heroes (https://www.football365.com/news/dancing-with-wolves-and-their-three-unheralded-heroes)
And then there’s Matt Doherty, whose previous top-flight experience consisted of 44 minutes for Wolves in 2011/12 and 13 Scottish Premier League appearances on loan at Hibs in the same season. Supporters at Molineux would happily have taken ten minutes of your summer to wax lyrical about their wonderful attacking right wing-back, but few of them predicted this impact. No defender in the league has had more touches in the opposition penalty area. Doherty beat Eden Hazard to be named the PFA’s Premier League Player of the Month for September.

Doherty should start on the right in this game. But in the event of both Doherty and Coleman being fit, then I'd see one of them (either Doherty or Coleman) as being a suitable shoe in for the left back position.
DeLorean

Doherty played plenty of games on the left, although left wing back mostly I think. I'm not sure Coleman would be suited to playing there.
