Just scored the winner for Derby in the last minute, firing past Shay Given at Pride Park.

did he mean it?
From the linked article

As the game has finished I’ve just gone up to him and he has said the same thing to me: ‘How has that gone in?” Sammon told the club afterwards.
“It’s crazy the way it did go in and it was very unlucky for the Middlesbrough left-back who made a great challenge.
I’ll take any goal like that in the dying stages of the game where we’re neck-and-neck and pushing for a goal.”

shame on me for even asking the question.

Of course he meant it, he was in the perfect position to receive the ball and whack it into the net, just the LB got in the way and disturbed the flow of the ball.
Whether he would have managed it without the LB, is another matter :)

Bit difficult to see what went on there on the gif, looks like it took a deflection or two, or was a bit of a miss-hit
but it ended up in the back of the net and that is all that matters.

Classy bit of play to put Craig Bryson in for Derby's second on Saturday.

Think the stick Sammon gets is a bit unfair. He's as good an option as Walters and Cox.

What attributes do Cox and Walters have that Sammon doesn't? Goalscoring? No. Crossing? No. Hold up play? No. Heading? No. Link up play? No.

Walters runs around like a headless chicken more, does he?

I remember Ireland losing to Kazakhstan until Long and Doyle came on for Cox and Walters, ironically enough. And Walters being at fault for the Alaba goal in Dublin too. And being completely ineffective while keeping better players like Brady, Long and McClean out of the team. But he seems to be immune from any kind of criticism?

Sammon has played a combined total of about 240 minutes for Ireland. It's not really enough time to make a definitive judgment on his abilities. He even got a couple of assists, almost scored against Spain and showed signs of decent link up with Keane.

If Cox or Walters were setting the world on fire I would understand but they have played over 60 games for Ireland between them and have been pretty poor and they became regulars around the time the malaise in the Trap era set in.

Sitting on the fence there I see ;)

Derby are certainly steamrollering up the Championship 6 straight wins on the trot, could well be Premiership next season, about 2-1 at the bookies.

Has anybody here watched a full Derby game since McLaren took over? I haven't, but from watching Middlesbrough he always seemed like a manager who could set up a team to play decent football, which I think would suit the likes of Hendrick and Keogh. Sammon probably won't ever be a Premier League striker, but he has some utility in a lower-PL club, as his spell at Wigan showed.

I think his spell at Wigan showed he is not a PL striker full stop, although he seems a decent bloke and Wigan fans liked him. I saw Derby at Wigan a few weeks back, very impressed with them. Keogh had a decent game.

I saw their game against a fairly makeshift Blackpool the other week. They won 5-1 having trailed 0-1 at half time. To be honest, they should have been well ahead, even by the break, but it took a very dubious penalty to prise the floodgates open. In fairness to Nigel Clough, he had them playing some very decent passing football this season but they just couldn't really defend and, inevitably, struggled for consistency. McClaren seems to have introduced an improved defensive structure without limiting their attacking prowess. Coincidentally, Danny Mills was talking about playing under McClaren at Middlesbrough on MOTD the other night, saying that each player knew their basic defensive roles inside out. He can't believe some of the goals that are being conceded in the PL at the moment, given it would only take a small bit of video analysis and a half hour on the training ground to get it right.

They were also struggling to win games at home under Clough, but I was at their game in Yeovil (and friendly v Bohs) earlier in the season and they gave a bit of an exhibition. Granted there is very little pressure on the ball from the Yeovil players, but this is one of their goals from that game: (Only heard it on the radio as we only made it in for second half )

I'd agree that Sammon isn't a PL striker, or anywhere near it really. He's very much a Derby sub these times barring injuries, but good to see him contribution when he gets a chance. I'd wouldn't be as dismissive as botn in relation to his Ireland prospects though, he wouldn't be anywhere near my first choice but I really don't see anything substantially better about Simon Cox I don't think, and is possibly on a par with Kevin Doyle right now.

McClaren is enjoying his honeymoon period at Derby at the moment, he didn't really have one at Forest, it pretty much started in divorce.
Remains to be seen how long it will last, but they are the form team in the division at the moment.
Funny how the fortunes of a manager change he looked like a complete idiot at Forest!

7 Irish players in action at Pride Park. Keogh, Hendrick and Sammon for Derby. Forde, Dunne, Williams and Garvan for Millwall.

Sammon makes his second start this season. The 27 other appearances have all came from the bench.

Forde is being linked with Celtic as a replacement for Forster as it's looking more and more likely that the latter will leave this summer to boost his International aspirations.

Doesn't sound like he'll figure much in the first team plans this season.

Thought he might move over the summer actually. Did he get something like two starts last season?

Sammon was a decent foil for Keane in the limited game time he got for Ireland. He even got a couple of assists, didn't he?

I wouldn't have him in the team by any means but I think his uselessness is greatly exaggerated.

He was awful against Austria and I really hold it against Trap for persisting with him, but he laid two on a plate for Keane against Faroes I think.

Funnily, he came in for a little bit of criticism for celebrating his goal against a former team, which Mick McCarthy quickly shot down.

I think that’s the biggest load of nonsense ever. Are you ever going to go back and play for that club?I’ve had a few clubs and my club is now Ipswich. I’m not bothered who we’re playing against.
If we win I’m giving it large. That’s where my loyalties lie, with Ipswich.

If people still don't understand what managers see in Conor, then look at the build up to his goal. He mightn't have a great goal ratio but he opens up space for other players.

Olé Olé
23/09/2014, 5:25 PM
In fairness to him, his first touch for that goal was spot on too. The through ball wasn't exactly a great one and, although he was fortunate that the keeper gave him a second change, he had a fair deal of work to do to convert that.

He did well in that instance, but let's not get carried away here. He did take his goal very well, good determination and deserved the luck he got.
