Dropped for today after all that. I wonder is it because Wigan's training mid-week was based on Sammon being missing and so getting Rodallega and Moses working together?

I guess the situation could arise in a game during a substitution where it was "Ledger in for Sammon."

He was due to be dropped anyways, his performances haven't impressed Wigan supporters. Rodallega is still the main man in their eyes.

Who cares about what Wigan supporters think? They've got more points in the 5 or 6 games he's played than the rest of the games combined.

Sammon's goal or Rodallega's? I'd be inclined to give it to Sammon. He appears to stick a leg out intentionally as Rodallega's shot comes through. Even so, it's the deflection that takes it past the goalkeeper. I see the BBC have awarded it to Rodallega though.

I don't think intent matters, if you get the last touch its your goal. I don't know who the official scorers are but theres always the dubious goals committee if all else fails.

They've made mugs of us, in fact we've been stitched up like a kipper.

I don't know about that, but I think he is doing very well, but it's a big leap from Kilmarnock to Wigan.:D

Sammon linked with a season long loan move to Derby this morning.

Possible good news as Rodallego has moved to Fulham on a free, meaning Wigan's strike options will be limited next season.

edit: in fact Sammon has joined Derby on a six-month loan

He'll get heckled for that headline by Derby fans if he does move, even though that's not really what he said (was just a bland "Taking it one day at a time, doing my best for the team, focused on that" comment). Ah, football writers. Idiots.

It's blatantly obvious to anyone whose ever watched him that he won't cut it in the premiership, admire his determination to prove himself but I can't see Wigan continuing to give him chances.

Would explain why he wasn't even on the bench yesterday.

Another nice sign-on fee too, though presumably a pay-cut to counter that.

Steve Davies has left Derby for Bristol, so hopefully there wont be too much competition for him, he'll be a bigger fish in a smaller pond than during his time at Wigan.

UCD and Cherry Orchard should make a few quid out of this. For UCD I think he was there for two seasons so they'd get 1% of the fee- £12000. Wellvan (one of the old versions of Derry City) would be due a few quid too which would pass to any remaining creditors via the liquidator. Cherry Orchard will have done rather well out of it- a good example of a non senior club having their player go to LOI and ultimately doing very nicely out of it.

Lost 2-0, but sounds like he made a promising start. From the Derby site's match report -

And in the opening few minutes the Irish striker looked like he had been in the Rams’ side for months, as he teed up Craig Bryson, who could only stab an effort wide of goal, before having a chance of his own – all inside the opening four minutes.

The 25-year-old bustled past Matt Mills through on goal, however the Leicester City loanee did well to keep up with Sammon, and did just enough to put the Irishman off who fired straight at Adam Bogdan from close-range.

Only a relatively short report, and that's all the mention he gets. Was still 0-0 when he was substituted after 70 minutes.

Goal Sammon. Michael Jacobs cuts in from the left, fires in a low shot which Butland dives and pushes on to the post. The ball pops up in the air, Sammon heads in to the open goal from about eight yards out. Definitely a question of offsides there. 1-0.

Just bagged a second. Long ball comes in to the box, headed down by Jake Buxton. Sammon takes one touch on his left foot about eighteen yards out, next touch fires a low left footed shot which bounces past Jack Butland and in to the far corner.

A yard offside for the first and scuffs the second! How bad, great to see him doing well. He was buzzing in his interview after the game but he spoke well. Got motm as well. The Derby fans have had a bit of mixed reaction to him so far so that will go some way towards winning them over.

I think you'd find very few people who'd agree that. Even fans of the clubs he played for - who seemed to be his biggest critics - merely argued that he was over-rated (and opposition fans almost always rated him very highly).

The thick plottens. Trap reckons Sammon is better than Norwich's Grant Holt For England, and is looking to pair him up with Hoolahan.

"I actually think that Hoolahan and Sammon, without any disrespect to Grant Holt, Sammon is better. He has more technical characteristics. He's quicker and more agile and I think the link play between the two could be better and more exciting than what you see in the existing set-up at Norwich.

"We'll see. But I think Sammon and Hoolahan could offer a very interesting combination."

He also said once that he saw Robbie in the Totti role and the next day he still put out a flat 4-4-2. This is defelctionisim we will al be so relieved that he didn't do this Sammon thing that we won't complain that he is still sticking to the same old tactics.

74--------70
Holt-----Sammon

58 PAC 80 PAC (pace) +22
72 SHO 61 SHO (shooting) -11
59 PAS 49 PAS (passing) -10
60 DRI 71 DRI (dribbling) +11
54 DEF 42 DEF (defending) (-12 but ignored)
84 HE 72 HEA (heading) -12

So a +33 and a -33 leaves them level ignoring defending.

That's the stat's, Sammon is quicker and a better dribbler but loses out in the other 4 areas. I think Trap makes some good points, you can ignore the defending stat somewhat on the grounds they won't be doing much of that.

He misses a header here but I think maker of that video was somewhat biased in his opinions.

'Trapattoni - Sammon remains good option for Sweden match': http://www.extratime.ie/newsdesk/articles/9546/trapattoni---sammon-remains-good-option-for-sweden/

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has said that Conor Sammon remains a good option for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Sweden next month.

The former League of Ireland striker was handed his debut by Trapattoni last night and played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win.

“I think he’s a good option for Sweden because, like Poland, there is technical football and also strong football. For example in the past you saw Walters, physically in football is also important. So Sammon is a good option for this next game.”

Trapattoni was also fielded question about Wes Hoolahan, who came on as a substitute and got Ireland’s second goal. Hoolahan may continue to miss out on a starting place as the Italian looks to continue with two strikers.

“[He did well], not only the goal. In the past with many questions about Hoolahan I said we know very well about Hoolahan. We need two strikers with our team because with one striker all of the team play for the one striker.

“Hoolahan we know many times. With Marco I repeat, maybe we have overlooked him because in this club he play well in this position but his club is no Manchester or Arsenal but he is a good tactical option. In the future we will consider it.

"Two strikers with one (dropping) in midfield is not easy. In his club he play with one in this position. International football is not the club football.”

Trapattoni spoke about the three objectives that he had for his side and that he was please at how his side had played.

“We had three objective for this match - Evaluate the performance of the new players. We wanted to see their quality, personality, their attitude and also their commitment for the 90 minutes. And the last, which is usually the first objective; the end result. It was very important.

“In life, not only in football, it gives trust and confidence. Particularly with the new players we need confidence because we can grow more with the players, new and the ones coming back, McCarthy continue to grow.

“We won but in the first half Poland were superior. We were a little bit tense and missing many easy passes. After the goal, we were more confident and in the second half we played better and we deserved to win.”
