What's a placid casual anyway? Someone who's prepared to spend €500 on a manky Stone Island top but doesn't want to risk ruining it by fighting in it?

I am going to dress up in my Leprechaun suit with giant inflatable yellow banana in tow and head straight down to my local to watch the matches. Barstool is the new cool.

Bozo? I know the record label, the name of which in itself is a play on the late 80' term Acid Casual (coined around the time of some elements of the Casual movement and Acid House interlinking and which also happens to be the name of an act who've released on the label). Quite like the Super Furries myself. And I would have thought that it was obvious that I understand what placid means by reading the original post.

Nice to see your humour by pass has taken sucessfully.

From Don Howe's column in the telegraph on Capello's appointment as England manager: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/mai.../sfntac113.xml
Capello will need to hit the ground running and I hope he makes Terry Venables his assistant. He has the knowledge of the English game missing from Capello's otherwise impressive CV
On the one hand - whu-hooooo!! He wants Venables to assist England. Again.
On the other hand - d'oh! He definitely rates Venables as a coach.

    Don Howe's comment on Venables

Dont know if anyone read Don Howe's article in yesterday's Daily Telegraph about the appointment of Capello here but the last paragraph is strange given his involvement in the gang of three:

Capello will need to hit the ground running and I hope he makes Terry Venables his assistant. He has the knowledge of the English game missing from Capello's otherwise impressive CV.

    I hope he's right

Interesting comments from England fans below the article about Howe's suggestion. Seems they don't want TV either!

It is strange that since Vegetables is such a "great coach" that England decided they didn't want to rehire him for the vacant English position I think there is a lesson there for us all. The English, with their far greater resources than us, didn't want the man. Why should we?

how can don howe comment in the press about the english appointment when he is curretnly employed by the FAI and venables is a candidate for the FAI post ??

thsi is ridiculous , the committee has already proved itself to be a sham.

Although he has obviously given away that Venables is not in the running , lay lay lay
Was he crazy!! Yeah , in a very special way , an Irishman.

    Thumbs up

    I love such things as:

"he didn't have to qualify for euro96 as England were the hosts. Glorified for the 4-1 against Holland but achieved little else"

"a good article until the last bit, venables as an assistant"

I very much doubt Capello would want TV any where near his set up which should be our attitude as well.

The fact that Howe is suggesting TV would suggest that either

    a. he is out of the running for the Ireland job
    b. he is a good coach and he should go to England before Ireland
    c. Howe is completely out of touch with the modern game

    Take your pick

Agree. Don't want Venables anywhere near the Irish team. He seems like a well dodgy person and I seriously think we would be selling ourselves well short if we opted for him. Hodgson or Houiller are fine with me but obviously that's for bigger and more important people to decide

Does anyone know what the story is with the 2 friendlies v Brazil and Serbia - persume they will be sold as one package to maximise attendance???

I think most but not all on foot.ie are extremely concerned about the prospect of Venables becoming next manager of Ireland.

However, is it "no at all costs", or "no, but maybe if we can't get anyone better"?

My personal opinion is that on all objective counts Venables would probably have the best CV and track record of any manager we've ever had - and that's even after conceding that I think his record doesn't stand up to proper scrutiny. On that basis I think he could do a decent job.

However, against that, I'm disgusted by the way the media has set him up as the dream candidate, as if he's the answer to all our problems, and also the way they portray inane comments from past or present internationals as ringing endorsements. His track record is patchy and this was only publicised belatedly by the emergence of an anti-Venables camp. I think he'd be the choice of people who don't really care and who wouldn't give it much more than a minute's thought - mainly only because he's famous. There are better candidates out there. Not a huge amount if we're to be realistic, but maybe 4-5.

If I was to be objective I'd have to admit that he should be a "maybe, if we can't find anyone better" but in light of what's gone on since Staunton was appointed I really feel that it's "no, at all costs" for me.

no i'm not over-reacting , he is in the FAI's employ and shouldnt be giving an opinion on something which directly impinges on his task for them!
