so what poor souls are on their way to the Flansiro ?
Looking at the list of released players from other clubs, there are one or two handy players about.
Should we look for solid first division players, experienced and that can kick their way out of the divison, hoof ball all the way or look for younger less tested players and see if they can survive in the first ?
Or forget about promotion baton down the hatches, play locals and hope to survive for a few years ?

It all depends on who the manager is, first and foremost.
If it's Mathews, he might be able to convince a few of the lads to stay on, but his record of blooding locals isn't inspiring.
Vinny, apparently, has a lot of groundwork done in terms of looking at players, maybe he'd favour a Stephen Kenny approach of building a squad of talented unknowns.
How much, or even if, we can afford to pay them is crucual. Maybe Daisy went to Shels cos he thought there was a better chance of getting his money every week?

personally speaking i would look for solid experienced performers as the longer you stay in the first division the harder it is to get out of the division. it took us 16 years to get out of the first division last time around!
Would prefer younger, hungry players rather than the okay 1st division journey men. We got out last time with a team that hadn't been around multiple League of Ireland clubs and had something to prove.
It'll depend on the manager as to what way we'll go. Matthews obviously has a track record of going with more experienced players. A new manager may well have new ideas.

On the manager situation I would like Matthews to either go or commit now because the longer it goes without us knowing who will take charge the worse for us. If they dont any decent players out there will be snapped up. From the current squad I cant see too many like Daisy for example waiting around a month or two to find whetehr Alan is staying or not. Its a bit of a mess really!!:(

Mooney has turned down Cyrstal Palace becuase of money, so now he's mulling over moves to Drogs, Bohs and Norwich.
If he stays in the League, do we get compenstaion given his age does anyone know?
Also, I work with a Drogheda fan and he reckons Garto is on his way to Leicester — I wonder if we'll get a slice of that.

Ive a mate of mine over here who's a Palace fan. He though he'd never live to see the day that a Longford Town player turns down a move to Palace! Personally I'd have liked to have seen him play there. Him alongside Clinton would be great.

Well it's a turn up for the books at least. He earns more now as an electrician and part-time footballer than Palce were willing to pay. A bit cheeky on their part I think.

Looking at that list, the two I'd fancy are Williams and Alan Murphy. Doubt we'd stand a realistic chance with either though.
We really need the manager situation sorted out ASAP.

What age is he and how long have you had him?
Rocky77

We've had him for about 2 and half years and he's 22, as far as I know.

Unless he's not been paid wages, which Longford had a problem with earlier in the year (was it Paisley who moved to Pat's on a free?)

It's possible, but I'd imagine Mooney was the first guy getting paid every week for exactly that reason.

It's not impossible I suppose, but he could have buggered off in the August window when Stoke were in for him if it a) was the case or b) he was prepared to draw attention to it.
I never met the guy but he doesn't seem like that judas Paiso. He was desperate to get out but had a year on his contract. Mooney's going anyway and it shouldn't affect him whether his new employers have to pay us a few bob. It won't come out of his paycheque.

Paiso never seemed like that either whenever i talked to him.

I remember talking to board members when they signed mooney before he arrived, they we chuffed and Alan felt he was an amazing prospect. Good judgement on his part.

He wasn't in a worse position to any of the guys who weren't getting paid and they weren't falling over themselves to get out. To the best of my knowledge — and I'm open to contradiction — he had been paid up in full by the time of the farsical tribunal.
In the time he was with us he was well looked after for the all the injuries he had.

Rumour we are signing Robbie Martin from you. He any good? what position does he play?
It seems like your being screwed for players as you dont have a manager in place to sign anyone.
Rocky77
11/12/2007, 11:10 AM
Ha ha, Drogs get Barrett, you get the yellow pack Barrett!
I've heard this rumour alright. Robbie's a good player. Started off a striker but usually plays in midfield now - out wide or in the middle. Had a few injuries this season so always seemed a bit behind fitness-wise. Works hard [summed up by having his knee cartilage popped back in in the cup final to play on] and he can be a very good player for you next season.
The reference at the top relates to the fact that we spent a few bob to get him from UCD to replace Shane Barrett, who went you your great friends down the road. So in those terms he never really hit the heights we expected.

He was immense for us last season. A fantastic player in the centre of midfield.

Fantastic player. Will work his nads off every game. 100% commitment. And he's only 20 so he'll be getting even better and better. Apart from Prunty, he's the one player i'd really love to keep.
Apart from that, i don't rate the guy ;)

I think Longford might struggle, as sad as it might be - I’d be surprised if three or four players from last year are still there. I think it’s a club which is trying to get its structure right. Maybe they can compete this year, hopefully, please God, because I had a lot of time for the people that were running the club - hopefully they’ll get it back in shape. It might be a case of taking local lads next year and building themselves back up
Just read his interview. He's not very optimistic. The Daily Mail today reckons us, Athlone and Limerick 37 may not even get licences next season

So long as finances are in order by 6th Jan everything should be Ok.
Our budget is gonna be considerably lower than last year and it
should be stuck to, so hopefully we wont have financial woes!

Inevitable really. But best of luck to Sean, a great servant and player. And a token local lad.

yet another one that bites the dust..... robbie will be remembered for his crackin goal against ucd but im afraid for nothing else on top of that...
four ex town players with dundalk next season...

We have to be consistent. We haven't got a licence yet first time of asking (iirc).
And a token local lad.
That's a little harsh Pauro.... He's as much a local lad as many. It's a sad day... But LTFC after 8 seasons in the top flight never had another local regular. It was always great to see Sean and Alan around the town... It's time Gary Murphy and Adrian Murphy and the like were looked up....

Mooney's on trial with Birmingham City according to todays paper. David Beckham and Michael Owen's agent arranged it apparently.

Sorry, I meant 'token local lad' as Sean being one of the few locals in the squad. It did sound bad though, I agree. Mooney on trial at Birmingham. That's an interesting one, I can see why he turned down Palace now. Agree there should be a few more locals in the squad though.

it all depends on who becomes manager, i think things needed to be sorted out manager wise before christmas, and the right man put in place. God knows january will be tough trying to put a squad together, and then start pre-season training

Aside from the obvious need to keep bodies, I'd quite like John Reilly to stay anyway.
Demspey could be a solid Div 1 keeper but I doubt Wexler will have too many offers

Dempsey retired from football at the end of the season.
This thread is getting to be a bit of a joke. Its named transfer rumours and all we have heard about is players leaving! Sort out a manager and quick for goodness sake.

He's 23 so no compensation.
Incorrect. If he signs for an Irish club we get money. Not sure how much but it could be up to 60k. He was always paid in full, but you have to miss three consecutive weeks as far as I know anyhow to lose your rights. Probably irrelevant since he looks to be going to Birmingham after impressing on trial according to today's Times
