The "correct" version of Das Boot has always been a source of confusion. Here's the clearest explanation I can put together. The film is the original version, is 150 minutes long and was nominated for six Oscars. It was edited, under the supervision of Petersen, into a 209 minute director's cut and released in 1997.

Between the two of these, in 1985, the uncut miniseries version, which is 293 minutes long, was released. In short there are two or three "proper" versions but the film came first.

On the BBC2 thing, they didn't show it in one week when they showed it over the course of a few weeks. You might be confusing it with the reshowing of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy a couple of years earlier which was done in a single week.

I've a copy of the 'Directors Cut' which I bought about a year ago which is 200 minutes long. Assumed it was the 'full' version.

Both are equally as valid , you dont have to write great songs to recognize great songs :)

Although I haven't yet seen all of the fancied films yet, I doubt if they can touch
"The Lives of Others" about the Stasi imposed control on East German society. Gerd, the Stasi agent, reminded me a bit of David Kelly (weapons inspector), a true believer in the system.
It's long, it's slow, it's absolutly soaked in desolute East German stalanist empty brown athmosphere, it's subtitled and it's just brilliant.
Hollywood has commisioned another version :eek:

Next most enjoyable was "Darjeeling Limited" which I thought might have been about a train journey in India.
"Eastern Promise" worth it for Viggo Mortenson.

My worst, irredeemably lost 90 minutes, "Death Sentence" with Kevin Bacon

Same here, I enjoyed it but I was expecting better from the trailers and the story they had to work with. No fault of Smiths to be honest, my main issues were with the unneccessary, and horrible looking, CGI and the weak ending. It looks like a movie that could get a good DVD makeover with a directors cut, ala Bladerunner and Kingdom of God.


I've seen it in HMV up until recently so I think it's readily available. Easily the best movie of last year too

Love it.

Has "Atonement" been released yet? from a book by Ian McEwan It's a cinematic must, rather than dvd. It's a female romantic mood enhancer.
Every scene is lavishly directed to a photographic perfection. Personally I wasn't so much into the story but i'd watch it again for the photography pleasure alone.
Almost every photograph I take ends up looking like anti art.

Great film. Had it on dvd, got it for €10 in HMV a few years ago. DVD gone missing and price up to €30 or something like that.

Disappointed with the ending in I am Legend. Smith excellent though.
BTW it said the movie was 120mins long. In the cinema the programme started at 1.50 and was finished before 3.30.

Saw "We Own the Night" on Friday last expecting it to be just another cop thriller but it was actually really, really good. Well paced, intriguing and totally nerve-wracking at times. Should definately see it if you get the chance.

Think I remember reading somewhere that the release of this was delayed (In Europe at least) because of the Madeline McCann incident - apparently the plot concerns a missing child.

BTW - Mystic River is an excellent film, and an even better book. Denis Lehane is the author (He also scripts some episodes of The Wire - which I've resolved to mention on here at every possible opportunity ;)

I always though that was universally accepted as being utter crap? Possibly the worst ending to a film ever. One of the few films I ever considered walking out of, the others including Jeepers Creepers 2 and The Grudge. I have issues with crap horror.

Everyone I talked to in person said good things about the village.

I enjoyed it (went to see it at cinema). I have to admit one scene made me jump (camera spins round really fast if I remember quickly and someone is just standing there) and the missus has took mick out of me ever since. The guy who jumped at a 12 certificate!!!!

Has anybody seen M Night's last film? The bad reviews put me right off from seeing it - something to do with a mermaid I think.

After 10 minutes you´ll wonder why everything is so quiet in the film :)
I don´t really enjoy such films but it catches your attention.
I looked at it as more as a study of an evil psychopath in the absence of the usual cinematic tricks used to create suspense or fear and a sherrif trying to come to terms with the existance/ever presence of cold evil in the society.
Some welcome deadpan funny moments.
The Texas accent is too well done. I didn´t understand the half of what Tommy Lee Jones was saying. I think I´ll have to download the the subtitles.
Overall worth the effort.

Saw Charlie Wilson's War yesterday, it's funny and dark at the same time. Dialogue is fast and had a bit of trouble understanding the Texan accent but other than that no complaints.

Went to the cinema in Bangkok on Christmas Eve and saw I Am Legend, made me jump a couple of times. Have yet to see the original that someone mentioned earlier in the thread, Omega Man with C.Heston?

Also went to see Mr. Woodcock with Billy Bob Thornton. Not sure if that's out here yet but I thought it was pretty good. Bit of simple slap stick humour and some funny one liners/future quotes to use. Susan Sarandon looks good in it for anyone who has a thing for older women.;)

I watched this last nite. Wasnt too impressed. hard to feel any sympathy for any of the characters in it. wouldnt recommend it. didnt seem to have much of a point...as homer would say...it was just a bunch of stuff that happened.

Watched charlie wilsons war as well.. this was ok in a breezy lighthearted way. worth a look.

Got Pan's labyrinth on DVD ages ago (didn't realise it was subtitled) I hate watching subtitled movies as I alway's seem to find myself reading them instead of watching them. was watching Aeon Flux the other night the english sub's were on and I couldn't find the remote, ended up turning it off after about fifteen mins cause I realised I was reading the sub's before the characters spoke, don't know if it's just me I just don't seem to be able to ignore subtitles even if the film is in english

Not too sure about Pan's Labyrinth. I thought it was ok but it wasn't something I'd recommend.
I enjoyed it, though the pantomime villain is a bit much.
