Was just thinking this earlier, Is filming complete?.
If not they would have to re-shoot the whole film?

Dark Knight is in post production and set for release in the summer. I'm just wondering how Warner Bros are going to handle the marketing now. Are they going to pull all the ad's/trailers? Stick with the original release date?

I feel awfully sad thinking about his little girl growing up without her father...

On a happier note: Colin Farrell's new film was opening the Sundance Festival. I watched the trailer and it looks pretty good. "In Bruges" it's called, check it out.

On the Oliver Reed thing, I was of the understanding that they had to change the ending somewhat because of his death as apparently his character was meant to survive to the end of the film.

Not quite.

Reed was meant to have some exit dialogue during the escape scene which was originally to feature about 3/4 way through the finished movie. This dialogue would intimate that he was going to high tail it out of there, look after himself, and that Maximus was on his own, as Reed's character wasn't going to stick around for the carnage to follow.

After Reed's death, Scott couldn't film the scene despite the advances in technology available to him, and as he said himself , it worked out better using the near-silent CG footage , as the dimly lit reaction shots gave the Proximo character a more noble end, in light of Reed's tragic passing, but aside from some that slight restructuring (using already-shot footage and manipulated CG shots) no further adjustment to the script was required.

Don't know if anyone mentioned Remember the Titans, He got Game or the Hurricane(kinda a sports movie but more a story)
3 great movies from one of my fave all time actors denzel washington.... Man on Fire and malcolm X 2 other mentions for him also amongst others

Has to be the greatest actor in the world right now IMO(would have been Tom Hanks until he dissappeared of the radar...well until recently anyway).
You know your going to see a cracker when his names on the list!.

Three of the best films ive seen in the past year were ''Deja Vu'', ''American Gangster'' and his newest film ''The Great Debaters''. I dont think the last one is getting a cinematic release here as i watched it online a number of weeks ago and still havent seen any sign of it since.

Also all the films you mentioned are amazing although i have'nt seen ''Man on Fire'' ive heard good things about it

Really looking forward to watching ''Cloverfield'', anyone who went to the Transformers would have seen the 3/4 minute clip, That left you on the edge of your seat wondering ''What the hell just happened''. Amazing form of advertisment, not even a name was given to the film until recently!!

Daniel Day Lewis for me. Incredible actor. Everything I've seen him in he's completely different. You wouldn't think it was the same person in My Left Foot and Gangs of New York for instance.

I only just noticed this thread!
I didn't mean it as in why didn't you see that it has been mentioned before.
Its a multi page thread so some films will get mentioned multi times

I watched half of 2 days in Paris last night and I am not so inspired to watch the second half, is it worth the effort?
So far the 3 best scenes have been the ones with the taxi drivers, about 20 seconds each.

Yeah.

Im not great at maths, but I'd go with the guy who said 7. Because he can count. And he counted that one correctly. You said 3. You were wrong.

Counting Denzel's movies from Jan 2007 to Jan 2008 I get ...Errrmmm...American Gangster. (That's "1" )

He's been quiet this last few months.

(The Great Debaters , good as it is, will be straight to DVD Spring 2008. ) Wrong there too. Unlucky , dude.

Bearing in mind that it has only been out in the last 3 months in the U.S. , a limited release in the UK or Ireland would be the best we could expect in the next few months.

EDIT :CORRECTING 2007 TO 2008 An incorrect year error - and obviously so. Nonetheless, subject to selective quoting.

I know there was 7, i was only counting decent/motion/heard off pictures. i.e ''Catch me if you can'' ''DaVinci Code'' and ''Charlie Wilsons War''

Would hardly class the two animated films, and never heard of the other two, so stand by the ''disapeared off the radar''comment. Has'nt appeared in enough motion pictures the past few years to hold the best actor award.

So just stick the word decent before the 3 so

Stephen Spielberg's' $100m grossing The Terminal with Catherine Zeta Jones,

The Oscar Nominated 'Cars' with Paul Newman, for which Hanks took centre stage in all the European press conferences for, despite the fact he had just a cameo role, and

The Polar Express, Robert Zemeckis triple oscar nominated (in the Movie categories, not "animated") Christmas film, which, again, Hanks took pole position in promoting...

And finally, Award winning "American Beauty" director Sam Mendes' Oscar winning 'Road to Perdition' , again , with the Oscar Winning Paul Newman (which had another 6 oscar nominations, a Bafta & Golden Globe win, as well as an Empire award Nom for Hanks as best Actor)

Watched "The Miracle of Berne" last night on RTE2.It was a light hearted look at the 1954 WC victory by the Germans who beat the then wizards of world football Hungary in the final.Good wee film which apparantly won a few awards. It recreated a real sense of time and place which imo a lot of films struggle to do.Switched over from Remember the titans starring our mate Denzel which was looking way too predictable.
BTW re:Tom Hanks I thought Catch me if you can was very enetertaining and a little underestimated.

I'd say a lot more people would have trouble associating him with those two MOTION films aswell, I go the cinema a good bit and watch a lot of films, and wouldnt have been able to name him in them.
As for the animated films, i'd hardly still call him on top of his game for that.

What differs the likes of himself and a few others from the bunch is the performance he gives through visual impact. That isnt visable is an animated film so i wouldnt count them!.
Can you class the actress who does Marge Simpsons voice a great actor?, after all i think she is the one who has never done any work bar voice acting. All in all its an art in its own but would'nt let someone hold the greatest actor accolade as there not actually featuring!!

Road to Perdition is a great flick, Newman was fantastic in it. I liked the terminal too, suprising too because i usually dont like that kind of movie!
De Niro and Pacino are simply greats. I really enjoyed "this boys life", not that well known but great performances from de niro,di caprio and ellen barkin!Once upon a time in america, raging bull and taxi driver were excellent also. Wasnt impressed with hide n seek though.

Julie Kavner?

Me personally, no I just think she's 'alright'.

But the people who nominated her for 10 acting Emmys and 4 Golden Globes throughout the 70's 80's and 90's do. And so Does Woody Allen. He's cast her in most of his New York movies. I dont personally consider myself a fan of Allen, but it's generally accepted that he knows good actors.

I made enough drunken errors in my posts for you to gain the upper hand without having to say mad, groundless things. You should look out for those opportunities in the future. It'll save you being embarrassed when one unneccesary piece of rhetoric turns out to be shaky, as the example above proves.

Fin.
_________________

Regarding Pacino, one that tends to be forgotten is "And Justice For all" , a tight little courtroom drama co-starring John Forsythe ( Blake Carrington out of "Dynasty" and the voice of the eponymous Charlie from "Charlie's angels")

Very 70's in tone (and synthy soundrack) focussing on a Lawyer (Pacino) & his personal dilemma when appointed to defend a corrupt Judge (Forsythe) in a Rape trial. The Judge may be innocent of THIS crime, but will Pacino's knowledge of the Judges previous actions affect his duty to the truth or his perception of the law?

While the movie itself is largely (sadly) neglected (it's one of Director Norman Jewison's best) , most film fans are at least aware of Pacino's performance in the key "Contempt" scene where an outraged Pacino prowls the court, having been told by the presiding judge that his comments were out of order, he rants "YOU'RE out of order! YOU'RE out of order! This whole damn TRIAL is out of order!" (They're aware of it primarily for it being a Joey Tribiani audition scene in "Friends".... Still, C'est la vie...)

I disagree with that. The guy hasn't cast a decent female lead in a couple of decades (who here rates Scarlett Johansson for her 'acting'?), and thinks Johnaton Rhys Meyer is quality.

Bondvillain
24/01/2008, 1:46 PM
I see your point, especially on Myers and Johannsen , but in general the "female lead" comment is a little harsh - See:

Chloe Sevigny in Melinda and Melinda
Christina Ricci in Anything Else
Helen Hunt in The Jade Scorpion
Elaine Stritch, Tracey Ullman & Elaine May in Small time Crooks
Samantha Morton in Sweet and lowdown
Judy Davis in Deconstructing Harry
Natasha Lyonne in Everyone says I love you
Mira Sorvino in Mighty Aphrodite
Diane Weist in Bullets over Broadway.

All decent actresses, and for Woody, who has tended to write more detailed male characters since the Annie Hall era, the majority are fleshy female roles (in some very dodgy movies in some cases, but fleshy & female nonetheless...)

Hunt, Morton and Davis I give you, but the rest are average actresses in average roles, the three I mentioned are good actresses in average roles.

Sevigny is the most over-rated actress of this era, famous for her dress sense and giving her boyfriend a real blowjob in a film

Bondvillain
24/01/2008, 5:09 PM
Different strokes I suppose.

I thought that Weist and Sorvino have never been better than in their Oscar winning roles, and having seen Elaine Strich perform in the flesh, I was left with the impression that she single handedly disproved the "women cant be funny" argument. Sevigney is , admittedly, useless to humanity, but using her as a self-obsessed porcelain waif with ideas above her station in a movie shows that Allen's casting instincts are pretty much on the money...

And Christina Ricci has capital knockers. Not a word against her will be heard. :D

I'm Not There based on part of Bob Dylan's life with him being played by a nr. of actors plus Cate Blanchett.
Some parts were very good, especially the depiction of Dylan as a teenager being played by a 12 year old precocious cocky black kid.
Overall the film focuses on a few areas of his life, much of it around Dylan's time in England in the mid sixties. The Pennebeker documentary "Don't Look Back" has already done that and much better. AFAIR the real Dylan in that Documentary (the light bulb press conference) was funnier and more coherent than Cate Blanchett's portrayal.
I wouldn´t not recommend it.
For me it doesn´t stand beside the real footage in the Scorcese /Pennebaker/Newport documentaries, even Renaldo and Clara.

Moody, dark and tense - my kind of film. The first 90 minutes are outstanding but after that it goes in a reflective direction that kind of threw me. The ending especially so. Well worth a watch. Next up for me is Cloverfield and the Valley of Elah.

Buffalo Soldiers is a good one. Some excellent black humour. Very much recommended.

Hoping to see Cloverfield myself over the weekend. Haven't been to see anything in ages.
