After this season I think Garvan needs to start playing Premiership football to keep his progress vertical. It would be great to see Ipswich go on a run but I thought with their new investor they would sign more players this transfer window. With Neil Alexander gone to Rangers, hopefully a chance for Supple.

From SSN:
Sunderland have agreed a £4million fee with Charlton for winger Andy Reid.

The Republic of Ireland international is now holding talks with Roy Keane's side over a switch to the Stadium of Light.

Reid started his career with Nottingham Forest before joining Tottenham for £4million in January 2005 and then moving on to The Valley for £3million in August 2006.

Black Cats defender Greg Halford may go in the opposite direction with a loan move to The Valley.

Addicks manager Alan Pardew told the club's official website: "A fee has been agreed and Andy Reid is talking to Sunderland.

"It was a difficult decision, but we have to look at ourselves and say 'are we going to let this affect us or will this make us stronger?' Hopefully, the latter will happen."

Check out his profile - http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=41447&seasonID=137 - he was coming off the bench more often than not, only 2 starts in the last two months and he hasn't scored at all this season.
Falkirk is a good club for him, they play decent football, and with any luck they'll play him as an out and out striker.

Incidentally, all of Leicester's Irish players (Conrad Logan, Alan Maybury, Alan Sheenan and Jonathan Hayes) are now out on loan, the only senior Irish player at the Walker's Stadium is loanee Clive Clarke!
Jim O'Brien (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=47373) on loan to Dundee United (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/teamDetails.xquery?teamID=740&seasonID=137)
Gary Dempsey (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=31878) to St Pat's

Statistics for January 2008: http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/january.xquery
Senior squad omittance Noel Hunt (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=34469) won more games than any other player in the squad
Damien Duff (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=10515) was substituted more than any other midfielder, and only Sean Scannell (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=48096) was substituted the same number of times
Robbie Keane (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=11957) did not complete 90 minutes at home in January
Considering John O'Shea (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=18121) was the most introduced substitute up until the end of December, he wasn't introduced from the bench once in January. However, he did remain on the bench more than any other defender
Only one defender scored in January - Gary Doherty (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=12910). He was also booked more than any other defender
From the strikers in the Brazil squad, only Robbie Keane and Daryl Murphy scored
Andy Keogh (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=39039) scored as many goals in January as he did in the whole of the rest of the season
No Irish player scored a penalty in January
Lee Carsley (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=1329) was booked more than any other player, which is strange considering he had not been booked in the season prior to that
Robbie Keane's goals led to the most wins (three), but Noel Hunt and Andy Keogh were more likely to end on the winning side. Both Hunt and Keogh won the 2 games they scored in, whereas Keane lost once in the four games in which he scored

Strange move this. The season doesn't start until April so he'll be waiting a while for competitive football. Standard of football in Superettan isn't great either - comparably to our own first division IMO.

Scotland Need To Get Stars Younger, Says Dutch Rookie Barry Maguire
Feb 8 2008

SCOTLAND'S Under-19 kids were taught a lesson on Wednesday night by a Dutch kid called Barry Maguire.

Holland ran out 2-1 winners in a friendly win at Broadwood and the FC Den Bosch midfielder's name shouldn't lead to confusion over his nationality. The playmaker, born in Holland to a Dutch mother and Irish father, warned that unless Scottish clubs start blooding players at a younger age we'll always come up short when matched against Europe's elite.

Maguire said: "I think we're stronger and more physical than the Scots. That comes from playing a lot of first-team football. I'm 18 but I've been playing first-team football for two years

"Most of the guys in the Holland side are playing first-team football and that was definitely the difference. If the Scottish guys can get more experience then I'm sure all that will come."

30 seconds into Reid's Sunderland debut and he passed for Murphy's goal. :)From the Sunday Telegraph online:

Andy Reid becomes instant Sunderland hero
By James Mossopp at The Stadium of Light

Sunderland (1) 2 Wigan (0) 0

They applauded when he warmed up, they cheered when he came on and they roared him to the echo when he created the goal that killed off Wigan. Andy Reid is the new star who dazzled at the Stadium of Light.

It was his debut, a £4 million signing from Charlton Athletic as the January transfer window was closing. He looked a shade tubby in his No 20 shirt but within seconds of being sent on by manager Roy Keane he brought the touch of class that had been missing.

Bundling his way past three challengers wide on the half-way line, he set off on a run and pinged the ball with perfect accuracy to the feet of Daryl Murphy who cut in and struck a 20-yarder no goalkeeper would have saved.

Irish Abroad for Saturday, 9th February 2008: http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/dateDetails.xquery?date=2008-02-09
There were more Irish goalscorers today than any other day this season, with no less than 17 Irish players finding the back of the net!
Roy O'Donovan (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=47075) made his first start in the League since 21st October 2007 (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/dateDetails.xquery?date=2007-10-21), and unfortunately had to go off early in the first half with an injury
Robbie Keane (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=11957) has now scored three goals in his last four away games
Despite Jonathan Walters (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=32939) scoring his ninth goal at home, Ipswich (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/teamDetails.xquery?teamID=1372) lost their first home game of the season
Sean St Ledger (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=34723) scored his first goal of the season
Andy Keogh (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=39039) has scored four goals in his last four games, before that he only had three goals all season
Glenn Whelan (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=26767) marked his first start for Stoke (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/teamDetails.xquery?teamID=2477) by picking up his ninth booking of the season
Lewis Emanuel (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=20948) also opened his account for the first time this season
Alan Sheehan (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=41226) completed 90 minutes for Leeds (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/teamDetails.xquery?teamID=1524) for the first time since his loan move
Darren Randolph (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=41744) and Adam Rooney (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=43228) both played their first games on loan at Bury (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/teamDetails.xquery?teamID=394)
Noel Hunt (http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=34469) scored his first goal in four games. The longest he had gone without scoring since October

Half an hour gone in the Celtic match. McGeady set up first with a low cross for Naka. And just scored there with typical McGeady goal from outside the box. His 8th goal and 10th assist of the season. He also laid on 2 fabulous crosses for Brown and Vennegoor. Free headers but both missed. I actually think he must put a lot of spin on his crosses because plenty of his crosses have led to free headers this season that failed to hit the target.
