Just a quick question. McGeady hit the post today with an overhead kick. The ball fell to Miller who scored. Would that count as an "assist" for McGeady?
No, has to be a direct pass

Irish sendings off: Alan McCormack(58)
Alan's disciplinary record makes interesting reading:
03/04: 4 yellow 1 red (16 games)
04/05: 2 yellow (12 games)
05/06: 11 yellow 1 red (28 games)
06/07: 12 yellow (29 games)
07/08: 1 yellow 1 red (1 game)
Total: 30 yellow and 4 red in 86 games:eek:

Given could have saved all three in my opinion (well a lot of goalies could've).
And Doyle nearly had the nightmare of all nightmares when he nearly left the country to clear a ball and Drogba was unlucky that he wasn't a bit more accurate with the following lob from the half-way line.

If he continues to perform like he did on Saturday Im sure Stan will call him up. James Simmonds is on trial at QPR, turned down England to get an call up for the Irish U19s a while back.
We have Leyton Orient tomorrow night in the cup and they will have a couple of Irish players. Sean Thornton scored a decent free kick at the weekend.

From football365's review of the weekend's debutants: http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8750_2658931,00.html
PAUL McSHANE (SUNDERLAND)
Michael Chopra might have got all the headlines but his was a cameo performance, while the real plaudits should go to the character actors in Sunderland's defence. Nyron Nosworthy was a revelation last season but on Saturday he was joined by Paul McShane - part of the same FA Youth Cup-winning side as Kieran Richardson but discarded by the Reds long before his teammate - and he was magnificent. Remember, he was up against the best Premier League strikeforce of last season...and they did absolutely nothing. If Spurs or Villa spend a fortune on Curtis Davies, they will have bought the wrong Baggies defender.

well lads
early season at leicester has seen Jonathan Hayes come on on the left for half an hour against blackpool at home, and he did very well, his first time on the ball saw him beat one man, then make a yard and put in a beautifull cross which dropped at the feet of his striker on the 6 yard line, who duly took a fresh air swipe at it. fine cross though.
his second contribution was to win a corner from absolutely nothing and his third was to cut inside and drift skillfully along the edge of the area before having a penalty claim turned down.
not overawed or shy either, i saw him approach experienced club captain Steven Clemence during a break in play, and tell him how and where he wanted it played. good stuff. he did pick up an injury which kept him out of the midweek cup game.
no Logan or Maybury on show.
for balackpool, Hoolahan was central to everything they did which threatened the leicester goal, always involved and wanting it, he came inside a lot and didnt at any time make a touchline run. he once beat 3 players with superb skill before shooting narrowly wide across the face of goal. he also played a key pass in the build up to his sides winner to open up the play.was replaced with 10 to go.
Ben Burgess was on the bench for them. big lad, looked lean too, but didnt feature.
also in midweek, Alan Sheehan, played the 90 at left back v accrington stanley but will have to fight with another Irishman in Clive Clark to keep the spot, Clarke arrived on an initial 3 month loan yesterday.

Jesus, thats terrible. I think he scored one goal his whole time and surely didn't start more than 3 times (I'm not 100% sure). I figure this is because of Hasselbaink and Fowler's arrival. So do you think he'll go back to Ireland or stay in England?

He'll come back here I reckon. i'm pretty sure the reason he got no chances was due to the fact he's lazy. All the talent in the world but never willing to give 100%. And he was found out. Cork should be looking to pick him up. Pats will probably attempt to get him as well. And Drogs possibly

from the Independent's review of Crystal Palace VS Leicester City at the weekend: http://sport.independent.co.uk/football/news/article2878725.ece
Clinton Morrison is a surly character at the best of times – haranguing referees for what he sees as bad decisions, castigating team-mates for stray passes and doing as much as possible to make opposition supporters dislike him.
But not this season. The Crystal Palace striker, who scored his side's late equaliser against Leicester City, insists that he is now a reformed character and, he hopes, a more accomplished footballer.
"My kids have made me change, I have grown up," the south London-born Morrison said. "When you are young, you are immature, you say things and fly off the handle. It is not totally going to stop, that is just the way that I am.
"But I sat down with my family and talked over things. They have said that I need to stop moaning because I lose my focus, and I have thought about that."
Morrison has scored two goals in as many league games this season, leaving him on 99 goals for the club. "I did have a message on a T-shirt planned for when I reached the 100 goals but it is not happening because you get booked for that sort of thing," he added, showing evidence of his new maturity.
To be honest, I would like to see Clinton back in the squad, I've stated before that I felt it was weakened without him, but I don't know who I would drop for him.
If anything, it's a good sign of the strength we're starting to build up front that he can't get into the squad.

We don't have strength in the forwards department, Stan just doesn't like Morrison. Long, Murphy and Stokes have proven nothing and Morrison should be ahead of them if the Association had any loyalty

palace v leicester 2-2-
Clarke and Sheehan both started for leicester with the latter withdrawn just before the hour mark, he had moved into left midfield with Clarkes arrival. Amazingly, Sheehan didnt make a matchday 16 all last season, despite several academy lads being thrown in due mainly to the poverty stricken state of the club, also the left side generally was a problem all season, with countless combinations tried and failed, but no Alan Sheehan.
But now, remarkably, post takeover, with plenty pennies about and players in the reserves who came on good money, he finds himself involved.
funny old game:)
Kennedy and Morrison for the home side with Clinton rescuing an injury time point for his side.
Kennedy, has been good in the middle when ive seen him the last couple of times, he really impressed me last season when his side came to leicester, and with Doyle of coventry being a key player for them,(they claimed he turned down prem offers to sign a new improved deal at cov in the close season) as with Whelan and Garvan, it leaves me shaking my head to hear of Norris of plymouth maybe climbing on board the green boat, surely Staunton is ignoring players doing the same job at the same level, players who are actually Irish.

Completely agree. I can't for the life of me understand why Garvan is nowhere near any Irish team. If he was English, I genuinely believe he would make their u21 team, let alone their squad. Whelan has been linked with a few premiership clubs like Wigan, Fulham and Middlesboro so it would have been a great opportunity to see what he's got.

Is anyone else worried by the fact that 0 Irish strikers have scored in the EPL and Hunt's goal is the only goal at all?
Jonathan Macken - Hasn't played/will likely be loaned or sold
Kevin Doyle - I don't know whats wrong here, haven't watched Reading
Shane Long - haven't watched Reading
David Connolly - hasn't gotten enough time
Daryl Murphy - don't know whats wrong here either
Anthony Stokes - hasn't gotten enough time up front (maybe)
Roy O'Donovan - hasn't gotten enough time
Robbie Keane - I believe has been playing behind 2 strikers though today was/is up front I think
Terry Dixon -
Caleb Folan - Hasn't gotten enough time
Obviously it is very early, but there have been 4 matches and you'd expect at least 1 or 2 of the above to have scored. Has anyone noticed if they have they been playing well? I bet the first goal will go to someone unexpected like Macken or O'Donovan. I know from experience (it happened to me a few years back) that if you don't score for the first few games that the pressure starts to rise and it is definitely harder when your feeling the pressure.

Sunderland have also been linked with a loan move for Londonderry-born Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson, who made his debut for the Republic of Ireland last week. Having refused to allow Jonny Evans and Danny Simpson to join Keane again on loan because of concerns over how it might weaken his squad, Sir Alex Ferguson may be reluctant to sanction such a move. Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy has also been mentioned as a potential recruit.
