Doesn't mean much, but two Irish players, Morrisson and Lawrence, got the nod in football365.com's Championship team of the season (http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8750_3068044,00.html).

I would say it means a lot both should IMO be in the next squad.

You can possibly add David Norris from that list too. Has he declared or been approached by Ireland yet?
If so and he joins Ipswich they could field a whole Irish midfield now that Quinn, Garvan and Walters are there and George O'Callaghan is still on their books although it looks like he's on his way out of the club.

I heard Burnley have put in a few bids for Glenn Whelan.

He was approached, and as interested in declaring for Ireland. But was never called into a squad. Not even the B team :(

id say thats just on hold tbh tets, id say we will see him sooner or later. is he any better than, Doyle or Quinn though. didnt Doyle turn down prem interest to sign a new deal a cov in the summer, nearly sure i read he did. and didnt he put in an incredible peformance in the arena when we beat the dutch in that friendly when Keane scored?

it would be harsh on him if he were passed over for another cap in favour of Norris after that, in my opinion.

Alan Maybury has left leicester to train with hearts for now, having been told he wont be featuring here, by the new manager.

when he came here, in a jan transfer window, he came a close second for player of the season that season. but in that summer, promoted sunderland displayed an interest and leicester blocked it and he never seemed as motivated again.

he was linked with several sides, mostly SPL ones, but always elected to stay on a contract which was using the last of leicesters parachute money from their last spell uptop. this has fostered a bit of resentment here, but i guess Maybury would have a different view on it.

No apparently, he is really from Kerry and is a 19 year old defender on loan to Chesterfield from Notts Forest

how sad am I ???

I watched the game yesterday as I thought Adam Rooney might play, and this Moloney lad had an absolute stormer at right back, he is a tall pacey player who can also play centre back, he was always getting involved, made quite a few darting runs down the wing, linked up especially well with Chesterfields forward players, and scored an unbelievable goal, which is bound to be shown time and time again on Sky, he picked the ball up in his own half, made another darting run, this time cutting into the middle of the park, then suddenly let fly with his left foot from 25 yards, and bingo....
He is currently on loan from Notts Forest, and I am really excited thet we may have unearthed a relatively unknown player....i know i am going a little over the top, but this lad really does look a player.....

His interview after the match wasn't a typical cliched filled one anyway.

"My deal is up in the summer and I don't know if I will be here next season.

"We were negotiating up until last month and I don't know if that is their final offer.

"If they are not going to pay me what I deserve, I will look elsewhere."

"I am a boyhood Celtic fan and my ambition is to play for them.

"I don't have a problem with John Hughes. I would not say a bad word about him - he is a great manager and a great man - it is the club."

Hughes:

"Patrick is one that I want to keep at the club.

"I want to build my team around him, but money does not grow on trees.

"The best thing for Patrick Cregg is to stay here for another season, get the headlines and, you never know, Celtic might come in for him."

Was really impressed with Cregg, great performance.

Worked really hard, but he's not a grafter- there's a lot of talent there.

Celtic would be a bad option due to the depth at central mid there at the moment (Hartley, Brown, Donati), but if there's any way he could get onto a Championship side that would probably be the way to go.

leicester v palace 1-0

i was a bit dissappoonted with what Sean Scannell showed tonight, i had been looking forward to watching him play, he was busy enough but didnt catch the eye particularly for me, he was subbed with 15 to go.

Morrisson played the 90 and didnt miss any scorable chances, but again, id been expecting a bit more, given his scoring ratio this season. he fell on his arse over a plastic advert board and bowed to the howling crowd when he got to his feet, that was the most memorable moment from him imo.

leicester are improving, and probably deserved the win, just, trouble is there are arent any Irish in the squad at present, with Sheehan looking like he has lost the battle for the LB spot to the other academy lad,

this was on sky, any of ye watch it? any thoughts, Scannell in particular?

eirebhoy
29/01/2008, 7:05 AM
I watched from minute 10 to minute 40 and was impressed with Scannell. He kept things simple which is encouraging for his type of player at that age. He really doesn't look older than 12. All his passes found a teammate in that time and he was simply not given an inch. Double marked when out on the right, very tightly marked when moved centrally. That is a very tough league to play in. I couldn't believe how much of a battle the match was from what I saw. Some world class players would have found it hard to have any influence in yesterdays match.

irishfan86
29/01/2008, 7:55 AM
I'd agree with EB's assessment of the match.

Two hard working defensive teams going at it in the most traditional of battles.

Tonnes of long balls, and the ref was letting all sorts of clutching and grabbing to go on off set pieces.

Scrappy goal, scrappy match- I wouldn't be too worried about Morrison's or Scannell's seeming invisibility unless we're going to be up against a Jack Charlton managed team in World Cup Qualifying!

O'Toole only emerged this season. Very few of us even knew of him last year. I didn't.

Garvan is back playing well having missed almost all the previous season.

Gibson is playing first team football in England for the first time (didn't play last night) and McCann is still getting praise for his performances. That's progress of sorts. Garvan is widely regarded as one of the best talents, let alone best young talents, outside the Premiership.

I don't think Quinn has been prominent in Robson's team this year and Cregg's good form was really only highlighted this week.

They're all still a bit young to make a big impact so bubbling under is ok as long as they're still progressing.

dr_peepee

I'm thrilled that Garvan still seems to be somewhat under the radar over there... Another 12 months in Ipswich first team for me before I'd start itching for him to move up. Would hate to see him do a "Huddlestone" if you know what I mean... Saying that I wouldn't like Ipswich to get promoted with him either, I don't think that would serve him well.. I'm thinking Blackburn for another two or three years before one of the Big five come in for him (Everton will have joined the ranks at that stage:))...

It's so crazy, it just might work!!

If you go back through the years of the FA youth cup winning sides you'll find at least a couple of players that made it as premiership regulars (or in the most recent years are breaking through in the premiership atm).

2004/05: Ipswich Town
?

2003/04: Middlesbrough
David Wheater
Andrew Taylor
Adam Johnson

2002/03: Manchester United
Paul McShane
Chris Eagles
Kieran Richardson

2001/02: Aston Villa
Liam Ridgewell
Steven Davis
Luke Moore

2000/01: Arsenal
Steve Sidwell
Jermaine Pennant
Jérémie Aliadière
Justin Hoyte

1999/00: Arsenal
Steve Sidwell
Jérémie Aliadière
Moritz Volz

1998/99: West Ham United
Stephen Bywater
Michael Carrick
Joe Cole

1997/98: Everton
Richard Dunne
Leon Osman
Tony Hibbert

1996/97: Leeds United
Paul Robinson
Jonathan Woodgate
Harry Kewell
Alan Smith

1995/96: Liverpool
Jamie Carragher
Michael Owen

Garvan was a year younger than most of the players in the Ipswich cup winning side and was regarded as the one with most potential. He was the first player to get his chance in the first team and has been there ever since. When Ipswich are at their best it's with Garvan controlling their play from the middle of the pitch. It's not often you get that from a 19/20 year old.

Eirebhoy, i'm not saying Garvan ain't going to be a good player and important to us but i suppose i'm defending huddlestone more than anything. Having played against him for years and doing athletics with him he's a pure animal and has all the attributes to go right to the top.

Morecambe have signed Henry McStay until the end of the season, following his release by Royal Antwerp.
The Belgians are managed by ex-Burnley player Warren Joyce and Shrimps boss Sammy McIlroy said: "He's been sending me rave notices about this boy."

The 22-year-old defender has played for Northern Ireland Under-17s and the Republic of Ireland Under-21 team.

The former Leeds man could face Barnet on Saturday if international clearance comes through in time.

I think Huddlestone can be a very careless footballer and he wouldn't stand out if it wasn't for his atheleticism & size. He has the potential but needs work on his game. Ramos has started the process by helping him and others at Spurs lose weight. Huddlestone is leaner now.

Garvan will never be his size but is certainly athletic enough to succeed at the highest level. He's a far more elegant player too in my opinion. I don't agree at all that he hasn't the same range of passing. I'd say it's better.
