Is he playing up front? I thought he was a left-full for some reason.

He's a left-footed attacking central midfielder, but I think he was drafted in as a left-full for his club on a couple of occassions due to injuries.

Any news on this front?

(perhaps the Russian game put him off)

I was told that he has declared (from an FAI source). ;)

I'm just surprised it has taken so long for it to be officially confirmed, given his attendance at the Russian game.

Good to hear.

(perhaps the Russian game put him off)

Or massively encouraging for a midfielder trying to break into the Irish team given the vacuous nature of that area on the night!

he is hoping to be selected for the Norway friendly

Norway? Jesus, how many countries can this guy play for?

Seriously though, very interesting to find out he was a guest of the FAI for the Russia game. I'd expect to see him next month.

Wait - Maguire was invited to the Russian game? And met Trap? And Tardelli's watched him numerous times? But sure the Irish set-up don't do scouting, they just pick the same squad over and over again....

He was back in action today & was brought on as a 41st minute sub in the 1-0 loss to ADO Den Haag.

He whipped in some dangerous corners, but not much from open play. Got taken off with about 10 mins left.

I thought he was quite poor tbh. His touch wasn't great and his passing was weak. Certainly not international standard based on last night's game.

Paul Doyle did the Minute-by-Minute on the Guardian yesterday and said he would keep an eye on Barry Maguire over the course of the 90 minutes. Ultimately, this is all he had to say about him:

84 min: Maguire, having done little to suggest he'd be better than Stephen Hunt. Liam Lawrence. Keith Fahey or Aiden McGeady in the Irish side, totters off to be replaced by Sarota.

Yea I tried to watch the match but it was a pretty boring low quality affair,
Didn't really see much of McGuire, certainly nothing to impress.
Nobody on the pitch would get in the Ireland squad!!

I have to agree. And it doesnt help that he's slow with and without the ball. Its the same story in the Dutch league games.

Don't forget "2 Unlimited" as well. Who could forget the brooding tour de force that was "No Limits".

Ok so Maguire doesn't appear to be all he's cracked up to be, but what about this fella called Adam Maher who scored for AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League?

Transferred from Utrecht to VVV Venlo - essentially dropping from mid-table to relegation candidates. Doesn't say if it's permanent or a loan deal.

^ 3 Year contract at VVV Venlo
http://www.vvv-venlo.nl/nl/mannen-barry-maguire.htm

Translation :

Barry Maguire signed a contract for three years at VVV-Venlo. The 21-year-old midfielder from FC Utrecht started his professional career at FC Den Bosch where he was voted the most talented player in the first division. In 2008 he transferred to FC Utrecht, where he is behind Strootman Silberbauer and no fixed place in the base was at FC Utrecht.

Director of Football Business VVV-Venlo, Mario Captein is very pleased with this addition to the selection. "Maguire is a passionate and talented player who at VVV-Venlo next step in his career to create a permanent place in the base to obtain. Important I believe that he has experience in the Premier League. "

Barry Maguire, born in Tiel, is as the name suggests, half Irish. This means he can come out for the Irish national team. To date he did this once U17. For the Dutch national team he played in O18 and O19.

Barry was tested last week and will during this week report to VVV-Venlo for the introduction and official signing of the contract.

VVV-Venlo Barry called from here welcome and wishes him every success!

I've never seen Venlo play, but they had to contest a relegation play-off at the end of the last season to ensure their survival in the Eredivisie. I've seen Dan Haag play live before and even they are abysmal, albeit away to Ajax. Den Haag were a top-half-of-the-table club last season, so take what you can from that...

As theworm says, he's with Robert Cullen there now who is Japanese-born to a Japanese mother and a da from the north.

Surely time to organise a B international in the new season and give some of these guys a chance to impress? Very hard to see anyone playing for Venlo displacing any of our midfield options at any stage, but who knows, maybe Maguire could take to international football well....we could do with a bit of that Dutch arrogance in midfield at times...:D

I talked with a Dutch guy from Utrecht the other day. Asked about Maguire and he said he was impressed by him initially, but when the team brought in some signings he fell out of favour.

Hard what to make from that but the guy seemed to think positively about him overall.
