We should just petition everyone who's eligible to play for Ireland then, just as a reassurance that we'll support them...
I jest.

i've only seen a few clips of him, but thats completely irrelevant as all people are trying to do is let maguire know that he'd be appreciated. i dont care how good or bad he is, if he or anyone else is chosen to play for ireland i'll support them 100% and thats the reason i signed the petition
So in that case, how many other players have you signed such petitions for? Are you going to set up a few ones yourself?
Make a petition for me sure, and let me know that I'd be "appreciated" (seems a strange word to use - I normally appreciate the most talented players the most like!)
I'm pretty good anyway. I can show you a few clips.
Oh and send me on the link to those clips of Maguire so willya?

Actual clip of a goal:

He has scored 6 goals in 66 games, not bad for a 19 year old defensive midfielder/defender.

how many half irish players is there playing on the continent who have never lived here?
the fact is, this petition was a nice idea, the lad is clearly struggling with his decision at the moment after rejecting the callup to our under 21 squad. This is simply a nice gesture from ireland fans to try and relieve some of the pressure on his young shoulders and let him know that we support him regardless of his decision.
i cant believe some of the posters on here would be so harsh as to dismiss something that was simply intended as a gesture of kidness and support to a young footballer.

What's the downside of this petition?
The upside is obvious, if a little fanciful.

You have a look at the above post too.....this sort of guff is nothing short of pathetic
Whats wrong with wanting the best players available/eligible to play for your country? Would you rather we sent out a team of cloggers from Finn Harps and Kilkenny to get horsewhipped??
What? I signed my name to the petition. I'd love if he played for us, and was good enough. Perhaps we could have an Ajax player(if he's good he might join them) for the first time since Stapleton(was it?)
I was just making fun of the 'irish culture' comment.

I thought your take on Irish culture was quite funny. I frequently go to the Irish newspapers' and RTE's websites to see what's going on in sport and entertainment and I see nothing I wouldn't get on BBC. RTE's homepage gives extraordinary prominence to UK soaps.

Exactly!
why arent we entitled to our opinion that a petition is the way to go? instead of you making people out to be pathetic when we clearly just want whats best for the team and will try anything to achieve that.
Well there's the argument that what is best for the national team in the short term isn't neccessarily best for Irish football in the long run, or even best for the Irish national team in the long run
As it is internet petitions in the sporting world are absolutely useless. Anyone who gets worked about them either way needs to rethink things. Completely harmless though

There are plenty of arguments and personal beliefs.
Most of them are irrelevant to a dual national exercising his right to play for one of his nationalities.
The dual national rule for National eligibility is a good one and a good one for Ireland.
It was not always used well in the past but overall it is used well now and used appropriately.
The issue does not go further than the basic expectation, that should Barry declare for Ireland, he stands by that declaration through thick and thin.

Nice to see that Barry is regularly playing already this season. Could be a great midfield option for us, I just hope he's being watched by our scouts...
There I was playing football manager 09 one day, im into the Jan 2011 transfer window and a news report hits the screen that Aston Villa have signed one "Barry Maguire" for 6.5mil, I look at the little information window on the player and see a Dutch flag.... chrishht I sez, a name like that and he's not Oirish?! Checked out his stats and seen he is Dutch/Irish... which led me to here!
Handy player in FM, right mid according to them though ... Somebody buy Don Givens FM 09.

The FAI haven't been in contact very recently - the last time they spoke, Barry didn't want to make a final decision just yet, as if he chooses to play for Ireland now, he won't be able to play for the Netherlands again. Now that the international season is over, the FAI may be in contact with him again over the Winter months to see if he has made any decisions.
Meanwhile, Utrecht are on TV early tomorrow on ESPN against Ajax. Hopefully he will make an appearance - it would be good to see him play against such quality opposition.

Just asked a Dutch mate of mine who's from Utrecht and supports them, what the story was with Barry Maguire and if he was any use:
"He looks a promising player, but still young and usually on the bench but he will turn out good I reckon. I can see him play for Ireland in two-three years time."
No mention of being good enough to play for Holland eventually anyway! Ireland might be his level!

Good luck to his choice.
He is very peripheral in the radar of possible players for the Irish team.

Not sure if he is fit now. Its going to be verry hard for him to get back in the first team. Utrecht have a verry good midfield at the moment.

Some news on Barry Maguire. He's back from being injured , but it looks like he is finding it difficult to fight for his first team spot. The original article was on voetbalzone.nl
I tried translating it a bit.
FC Utrecht advise Maguire to fight for his place in the first team Thursday, 21 January 2010 for 12:47 |
FC Utrecht do not want to loan out Barry Maguire. The midfielder let the governing board of FC Utrecht know that he wanted to be loanded out. Foeke Booy, director of football matters, does not agree. " He has had a difficult period, but I find, looking at his age that he must fight for his place in the first team ." " You don’t just get trust, you have to fight for it" , says the football director in the Dutch newspaper Algemene Dagblad.
There were periods that we thought that he would manifest himself in the first team, but that did not succeed at the time. Its not that he will not get a chance, nothing is impossible. But at the moment, Maguire feels that everything is impossible."
Maguire (20) has played in four games so far, last season he played 28. Former employer Bosch showed interest in the Utrech player. " But we don’t think it’s a good idea" , Booy said in the Algemende Dagblad
The level of our training lies much higher than at Den Bosch. Barry has played already in the first division, a step back will only do harm to his development at the moment.

Slightly off topic but Denmark's U-19 player of the year for 2009 was a lad called Thomas Delaney who's a midfielder with FC Copenhagen. This award's been won before by Jesper Gronkjaer (remember him?), Jon Dahl Tomasson and Peter Lovenkrands, so he's in good company. Anyone know anything about him?

He can also declare for USA if he wants. As that is his second nationality.

Doesnt seem to have any Irish in him
Barry Maguire scored Utrecht's 4th goal tonight against Celtic.
Chaos reigns in the Celtic defence in Utrecht. They are surely down and out of Europe now as substitute Barry Maguire drills a crisp low shot from about 20 yards beyond Zaluska's reach. The rampant Dutch now lead 4-2 on aggregate and look hungry for more.

According to some Dutch friends of mine (and they know their football), Maguire won't get within an asses roar of the Dutch national team. One of them is an Utrecht fan and he seemed quite nonplussed when I mentioned Maguire.
Also, in an interview in the last week or two in The Star, I remember reading a quote from Tardelli where he said he was going to watch a player in Holland. I'll post quote if I can dig it out.

David Connolly, between 9 and 13 years ago?
seriously though, I had a look at the squads of the Eredivisie teams linked from the main wikipedia article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eredivisie - and there are no English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish born players in the top division, so it must be Maguire

From page 95 of The Star on 15th of August.
Tardelli: "...we have more options now, and we are always looking for them. We even have a player in Holland who I will go to watch."
As Tetsujin says, it can't really be anybody else. Although I'm not holding my breath. Going on Trap's insinuations over the past year, I was expecting that Jamie O'Hara and Kyle Naughton would be lining up for us against Armenia at this stage!

I've just encountered the following: http://www.irishtimes.com/sports/soccer/2010/0826/1224277683720.html
Former Republic of Ireland under-15 midfielder Barry Maguire then completed the rout on the night as Celtic’s dismal away record in Europe continued, with just one win in 28 games on the road now.
That's not correct, is it? If it were, wouldn't FIFA's article 18 on eligibility rule him out of re-declaring for us?
Edit: Sorry, it is right. Was just a matter of checking the first page of the thread... Ho hum. Anyway, my second question still stands.

In any case, the one game Maguire played at U-15 level was a friendly (against Northern Ireland), so it really shouldn't count towards present eligibility.

Shouldn't or doesn't? Hmm...
I'm not sure about this one.
18: Change of Association
1. If a Player has more than one nationality, or if a Player acquires a new nationality, or if a Player is eligible to play for several representative teams due to nationality, he may, only once, request to change the Association for which he is eligible to play international matches to the Association of another country of which he holds nationality, subject to the following conditions:
(a) He has not played a match (either in full or in part) in an official competition at "A" international level for his current Association, and at the time of his first full or partial appearance in an international match in an official competition for his current Association, he already had the nationality of the representative team for which he wishes to play.
...
3. Any Player who has the right to change Associations in accordance with par. 1 and 2 above shall submit a written, substantiated request to the FIFA general secretariat. The Players’ Status Committee shall decide on the request. The procedure will be in accordance with the Rules Governing the Procedures of the Players’ Status Committee and the Dispute Resolution Chamber. Once the Player has filed his request, he is not eligible to play for any representative team until his request has been processed.
Wouldn't Maguire have had to go through this process the once already in switching from the FAI to the Dutch association after, in effect, temporarily declaring for us to play in an under-15 friendly? Unless under-15 friendly games aren't sanctioned by FIFA and he didn't need to officially register with the FAI or whatever in the first place? The simple act of having registered with the FAI, if he did so, and later making his switch to the Netherlands, whether he played any game for Ireland or not while he was with us, is the crux of the issue, as far as I can make out, but I'd be glad if someone could clear it up a bit as it would be unfortunate to lose out on a player that has been talked about quite highly due to him having played a friendly for us at under-15 level.
Take Shane Duffy, for example. He hasn't represented us yet at any level, but I believe that the simple fact of him having registered with the FAI and received his clearance documentation from FIFA to play for us rules him out from ever playing for Northern Ireland again whether he plays a game for us or not. Or am I mistaken?
Charlie Darwin
27/08/2010, 5:15 AM
I can't think of any test cases for it so I imagine if he decided to switch back they'd just have to submit it to FIFA and await the results.
In any case, he scored against Celtic so he's not Irish anymore in my book. (Celtic being a paragon of Irishness, of course, unlike those nasty League of Ireland clubs).

As far as playing for Holland, he's not even playing for the u21's.
