Congratulations and well done to Urlaur Utd on winning Division 2a of the Mayo League. They were presented with the league trophy after their dispatch of us on Sunday at Keelogues. I have great time for a few individuals at the club so I was happy enough in offering my congratulations after the game on Sunday. They'll join our A Team in Division One next season, if we're still there!!!
On the other hand, and I might be advised to post this in the Kids soccer section, though the Ballyvary Blue Bombers U-12 Girls might just protest at been considered as Kids. Under the stewardship of the legendary but often mythical Vincent Kenny the Ballyvary Blue Bombers U-12's won the Mayo Cup Final on Sunday with a win over Kilmurray (Crossmolina) with a little bit to spare. The final score from Milebush was 7-1 to the Bombers ladies.

mind you I think westport will be better suited to Milebush than Celtic.

Hard to say really, there are a number of people in Westport not happy with him and feels that he should go. Most feel that he should not play, some blame the players for lack of commitment. Sunday's result may determine what direction the committee will take on the future of Brendan O'Connor. Most of the squad born in 1983/84 have never gone a season without winning a trophy. If Celtic do win the league, there would be howls of derision from some of the heavies that love to see Celtic lose.
The lads going to Australia? Cannot fault them as they (like most) need a serious break to recharge the batteries after playing constant football for four years. To counteract that, you need a successful underage structure with a high turnover of players good enough for Super League/Connacht Cup and FAI Junior Cup standard and Westport United are a bit off that yet but a structure is attempted to be put in place.
I THINK Brendan would need more time to get it right, one must remember this Westport side is a good one. it need a rest played alot of football.

I know Keith Carty since he was about 5 because i coached him until he was about 17 and a more honest lad you would not meet! And i think the only reason he is leaving Celtic is his family commitments! He told me last year that he was really enjoying his football with Celtic! But i think the loss in the con cup final hurt him.because he should have been in that side.Abbey utd pulled out all the stop,s to get him to sign back at the start of last season. But he decided to stick with Celtic over his home team! But im sure Abbey are over the moon to be getting him back!

I would like to think most players are honest, but like or not most players want to play in a side that wins. it the nature of the beast.
But fair play to you and Abbey for sticking it out and winning back your player,
there is a lesson there for every one invovled in football.
what ever you may feel towards your fellow player, let him go and hope he may return. which is the case now all ends well.

Surely the argument that because there is no support shouldn't be a reason for the papers to give a load of coverage. By that logic table tennis should get two pages because they have only 10 fans in the county.
I think in fairness all three papers usually give more than one page. Surely we have to expect a bit less the week of an All-Ireland
Look I play in the lower divisions. Any coverage we get is usually sent in by our PRO and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Does your PRO sent in stuff, maybe that's where you should be looking. Inver certainly have a good PRO as you can see with their reports most weeks. I don't think we can demand coverage. I know I certainly wouldn't like if I was a reporter at any of our games this year. Jesus I barely stuck playing in some of them!!
The argument was not that because there is no support that there should be coverage to drum up support it was that there is support but no coverage. I just made a point in response to another argument that publicity would help the development and bring about more support.
This wasn't about the coverage on All Ireland week it was about the coverage (or lack of) all year round.
You can't just have reports about top games but about all games whether good or bad and surely the coverage should be more than PRO's sending in their report and having it published word for word but more like having a build up to important league games (not just cup finals), features on clubs and players, reporters opinions on how the games will go that week as the GAA has ( league wide not just super league) and so on.
Having said all that I have to commend the Connaught Telegarph this week for a big improvement on their reporting. More of the same and better please.

Which brings to an assignment. Get the sports pullout on all the local newspapers and give a statistical breakdown on coverage in the section over how many pages there are in the supplement. I would say that the average coverage towards football can improve and stuff does get sent to newspapers but not always get printed from my experience.

And so another season comes to an end and I just want to say well done to Swinford on claiming all 3 points. Having lost their manager recently Munno stepped up to the task and Swinford have picked up points of late. Anyhow they came to Keelogues on a lovely day for football and took all three points in what turned out to be a really disappointing season for us this year.A season that promised so much and started so brightly.
Great to see the Swinford lads again. Many of whom I know very well and it was nice to play them again. I dont begrudge them the result and the game meant nothing more than pride.A win and we might have finished third.
Well done to Swinford and to Declan for taking charge of affairs. I'll look forward to renewing rivalries again next season. Its been a difficult season because despite my best efforts I haven't really got fit and my ankle has troubled me all season.
As for us well we'll regroup again for next season and mount a challenge again next year.

Our worst fears were realised in Division One on Sunday as Mullranny Utd caused an upset and turned over Division One winners Manulla B. The result saw Mullranny Utd leapfrog us and consign the Bombers to a play off to determine which division they will play in next season. The game was level at 2-2 and keenly contested but 4 goals in the last 15 minutes saw Manulla B mauled and Mulranny confirm their Division One status for another season.
I thought we would face the winners of Castlebar Town/Ballyheane B but I'm since told we will meet the winners of Castlebar Town/Ballinrobe Town B.
A tough challenge facing us in the coming weeks.

I'm on nothing. If you read my post I didn't think it was Ballinrobe 'B' either and in fact I was pretty sure of it. I assume I was correct in saying it is Castlebar Town/Ballyheane 'B' for the right to meet Ballyvary Blue Bombers to decide who plays Division 1 football next season.

Ya didn't get at me on the left side.Nothing created from the left side at all. I got caught for pace a few times but then I had a bad slip early on and over stretched my hamstring.
Ya you did alrite as ever and had I been asked to play central midfield I might just have went home before the game. Yourself and Henry clashed a few times.
It was an enjoyable game and a relatively clean game. Look forward to meeting up again next season.

I would just like to say that well done to the coves on Sunday because they were the better team by far. Its been a long time since the 'old firm' played each other in Milebush and Westport showed the Celts up for what they are and that is just a team of lumpers. Now I know the game was overshadowed by Gerry Burkes injury but I feel I have to comment on the sideline.
What went on was just sickening and outrageous. The 'support' that Celtic bring with them are a disgrace to themselves and to their families. Everyone knows who they are and its the same few all the time. On the pitch you have Dykes balling out the players and on the line you have Fergie and Ryan senior and usually junior abusing everyone and anyone. At the game on Sunday there was a lot of young kids and this what they were hearing I feel really sorry for them. No wonder there was a small crowd at the game as I mean who wants to hear this abuse. Fair play to 'the Rock' for taking a stand against Dykes and sending him off because he tends to intimidate refs and Martin was having none of it, but the abuse he took on the way out of the pitch was a disgrace and has no place in Mayo soccer, and this continued down town that night. Its no wonder we have a ref shortage in Mayo when we have these hooligans(and I really mean that) on the line giving what for. I even heard that the refs are even thinking about boycotting Celtic A games and who could blame them. No one needs that sort of hassle. The Celtic chairman is resigning at the end of the year because of what went on and he realises that he has a business to run and as a figurehead for the club he doesnt want to be associated with these people. Mayo soccer will survive without these people and will be the better when they are gone.

I think your right Don.I dont see the problem going away.If anything with Castlebar Celtic's apparent ambition to enter Senior football the problem will only increase.I've seen this in Senior soccer and it only puts people off going to games. There tends to be a small minority who are the voice on everything at a club and no club can afford to lose support because it means a threat to the survival of the club.I've seen this happen at Finn Harps and its not like the club could actually afford to lose support. They seem to be in financial crisis. Nobody has the divine right to speak for a club and be the voice of the club. Dykes for one is well used to this environment. Should they be accepted to the Eircom League they'll fail before they have a chance to get up and running.
Just a thought.

Yes i think your right, refs should boycott Cetlic A games, to make a statement that they will not take the crap that is thrown at them every week and especially in big games. hasnt it happened to westport, they have to play all remaining games away from the sports park due to refs gettin abuse back there, so why doesnt this happen to celtic. but as normal its one rule for some and no rules for castlebar celtic....

Westport United do not have to play all remaining games away from the Sports Park, just the one against S&F. That decision arose from the report by the referee in the AIB Cup final against Ballina Town who felt he was verbally abused by some supporters. United vigorously contested his report and some members appeared in person at the Disciplinary hearing to make their case but the Mayo FA still fined them and made them play one game away from home. Last week, the abuse towards Westport United players (one was spat at) by Celtic 'supporters' and towards the referee was appalling and we are all anxious waiting to see what happens to them or will nothing happen because it didn't take place at their own ground. What amazes most people is if Westport United have been made play a game away from home how Celtic have avoided such a fate. Just a thought.

Typical... that doesnt surprize me at all. yes i agree about the the covies supporters as well. ive played in both grounds and some of the crap you have to listen to is unreal. I think refs should make more of an issue out of abuse from fans during games and include it in a report after each game. and if the ref or players recieve abuse from fans something should be done.

I agree that some players and referees can be on the receiving end in Westport but I hope you're not suggesting that it's confined to just Celtic and United. I have been at most grounds in Mayo in the past year or so and I have heard referees called the most vile of names and nothing has been done. I'm not condoning it happening in Westport but when there are big crowds at games, which there usually is in Westport, ie, compared to most other grounds in Mayo, there is probably the chance that one or two sneak in that you'd prefer weren't there. But what can you do, I've yet to see a Ballyheane official not take the admission money of someone and I've heard a fair old bit of abuse being given out there over the years.

First of all theirs a big difference between general banter between supporters opposition and refs.As opposed to the personal abuse which certain teams and players are subjected to when playing Celtic. I have been to every ground in the league at one stage or another and Celtic are by far the biggest offenders. While Westport are vocal I have never witnessed them trying to intimidate opposition players or officials.

I agree with your comment that there are clots in both clubs. I would go as far as saying that there are clots in most clubs, and it is up to the club to get rid of the people that abuse officials. As regards the Fintan McHale sending off in Ballyheane..I presume the sending off was not reported as the referee had made an error, and rescinded his decision on the night in question. If the matter is not reported, it is very hard to take action.

I am sure that if you ask Celtic they will be the first people to criticize the Mayo League.....some people can only see matters when if affects their own club....was Celtic Park not closed a number of years back also? The bad element needs to be eradicated, but people can only act on referees reports. Let us all hope that the incidents that have been referred to in other posts are reported, and then we can all make a judgement on the outcome.

I think you have got your facts wrong in this case Mossy (normally you are pretty accurate). In this case there was an error in identifying the person, and that was accepted by the referee. I am sure the Mayo League can only act on whatever is reported...not hearsay...
I also think that there are many clots in many clubs, and it is time that the individual clubs take responsibility, and act accordingly.

As regards the cup semi final in Westport, the referee was clearly abused by a lot of Westport Utd supporters and others. I saw, and heard that abuse. What happened to the Westport Utd players and supporters last Sunday was also disgraceful, and I would not blame them for wanting to see Castlebar Celtic penalised for their actions, but as others have suggested on this site, the facts and details must be in the referees report, or for some of the Mayo League officials to act on anything they saw or heard. Natural justice must be allowed to happen, and any disciplinary action must be based on official accounts of any incidents. I do not think it matters where they match might have been played. It is all down to the referees report.

It is not the first time that Castlebar Celtic hit the spotlight for the wrong reasons with their behaviour. Go back to January 16th 2005 after the FAI Junior Cup tie against Ballynanty Rovers and the alleged spitting incident by a Celtic player on a Ballynanty supporter. Ballynanty people had a low opinion of Castlebar that day and a Ballynanty supporter wrote into the Western People about the alleged incident. However, there has been no serious crowd violence as such but there are times at Westport United V Castlebar Celtic games that you can see a bit of incitement going on.

Firstly thanks for the back handed compliment!
My point is when the Muinteoir heard abuse from Celtic Dug- out, he informed Liam McAntee who acted on it and showed red to Fintan McHale.
Subsequently we are told that the ref had a difficulty with identity.
My problem with this is :
If this happened to Ballyheane (As it used to every week some years back when certain powerfull people were conducting a witch hunt) then the player would be suspended, guilty or otherwise. I.e. Identification counts if it is Celtic. Could you imagine Inver getting away with this ?.......
Now don't get me wrong here because there is no way that the Muinteior or any other less fallible human being could identify who said what 20 Yards away from him with his back turned.
If this was possible then it is an awfull pity that he was not in the Dallas Book depository in 1963 !!!!!!!!!!

It is not the needs or want of Ballyheane to see any party disciplined. I think mossey was making the point of how easy it was for a certain team to get their '' innocent party''s red card overturned. By the way did the real culprit own up?.

I have to gree with Spot Kick on this one. The impression you gave on your post was that action should have been taken by the Mayo league on F McH. You said in your post that the MFA were afraid of Celtic e.g F McH sent off in the Heane - no disciplinary action. Was it ever reported? How can action be taken if it was not reported, or did the referee in question tell you that it was reported, and then no action? If it was not reported, why would anyone take action against an innocent person? I think you need to leave this one Mossy.

Try telling that to Celtic, and they will laugh at you. I am sure that they also think that the referees have a down on them. I do not know if there was a culprit or not, and I do not know if he turned up. Mossy might be able to tell you, as it looks like he was at the game. I think we all need to move away from this subject, and concentrate on the remainder of the league. Hopefully the last league games of the season will have no trouble.

I have read heard alot over the last number of days regard to issue's refering Celtic / Westport game.
First of all congrats to Westport on winning The A.I.B. Cup even thou it must leave a bad tasted in the mouth.
We all no the bad blood this local darby can bring out in the pairring of these two.
First of all you need a strong man in the middle who is able to make decissions without interferance from others apart from his lines man.
If surporters from either side mis behave then deal with the issues,if its plain for others to see bad behavour then whats our lines man doing they are near to surporters to whats going on.
The Mayo League have there part to play to, they are as guilty as those who committ the offence for not having there grounds marshal to prevent this bad blood from taking place. One must remember after all its there ground.
Just to correct a matter,The Mayo League by the maner they have been appionted by have a duty to report such incidence that the see taking place at any grounds, and make sure that those who behave badly are dealt with, regardless wealther it appears on match cards.Mind you it wasn't to long ago when a certain Chairman at a match made sure he visted a refferees room to have chat after an incidant had taken place during the match. that club was dealt with.
All I can add is all isuess need to be dealt with my yours truly and not cop outs:mad:

Would this happen to be Celtic ? I dare say no but some Club the league can pick on.
The sad Thing about this is that if you try to explain it to certain okish people in the MAFL they come over all surprised and indignant and do not, or perhaps care not to see the double standards employed.

I have never seen officials being intimidated but in fairness lets look at this a little closer. Celtic are from Castlebar and some of the League Big-Wigs are also. Many of the Match Officials are well known in the town also - has the sniff of a bit of a cartel type thingy in that they all know who/when/what/why to get what they want.
On another point - about abuse - have any of ye been to a Mayo County Championship GAA fixture between two close rival parishes - we look like flower plucking pansies compared to the sort of stuff that goes on at those games. I'm not saying Soccer has to be as 'highly strung' as the GAA but it's the same type of people playing (and supporting) so it's possible for it to happen. Face it boys, we're never gonna solve a problem like that with discussion - only hurleys can fix that sort of issue:D

Changing subjects for a moment the Connacht Cup was on this weekend.
According to my records the results of the 24 matches involving Mayo teams went as follows:
Lost 17 68% 10 home losses 7 away losses
Won 8 32% 7 home wins 1 away
(one tie was all Mayo)
Pretty poor return I would say. Is this reflective of the standard of soccer in Mayo.

It may not be a reflection on the standards, but I believe it is reflection on the interest by a number of clubs at this stage of the season. Most clubs, unless they had some degree of success during the Mayo season, have found it difficult to maintain player interest and have not put in the same effort for these competitions. Your statistics tell the tale.
