Looks like there'll be a few games on that astro this weekend...

There have been changes to the kick-off times and venues for Cork City’s two friendly fixtures this weekend, due to the inclement weather.

The fixture against Mervue United this afternoon will now kick off at 5:30 pm instead of 4:30, and will take place on the astro turf pitch at Fahy’s Field.
Sunday’s fixture against Finn Harps will also take place on the astro turf pitch at Fahy’s Field, and will now kick off at 1.45 pm.

Why do Extratime.ie bother with a page of 'live updates' but not a single update on any ?

Cork City 6-1 Mervue Utd.

We fielded a fairly experimental lineup, lots of changes at half time.

Goals came from Elding (2), O'Sullivan, Buckley, Lehane, Tnonis.

The result doesn't bother me at this stage of the season, but the decision to use some of our U-19s creates genuine worries about our depth. None of them are near good enough to be considered for a Premier Division top-half side.

Ye lost to a team only put together in the past month - credit where it's due. Might have only been a preseason friendly but surely the Cup holders should have cruised to a win.

If the result was meaningless to Sligo, then why use it as an argument that the U-19s are not good enough? And the DVD jibe is a bit lame, applied to a different club that no longer exists.

Steady on lads. It's a bit much to be getting your onesies in a twist at this stage of the season. I made a genuine comment on my thoughts about how things went and I had some poor offended soul whingeing that I wasn't paying enough tribute to their efforts.

Wasn't whingeing about lack of credit - was genuinely surprised at the result and thought it was a bit lame to be putting it down to a couple of U-19s in the visiting side.

Doesnt take much then, maybe you need to get out more often!

I dont think that there were excuses being made for the result or blaming it on under19's. There was concern voiced over the strength in depth of the Sligo squad and that if they are relying on u19's to bolster the squad it could effect a top half teams competetiveness. I would imagine that monies spent on drawing down sports capital grant could be putting a squeeze on the player budget.

Pats beat Shels 4-1 last night and beat Crumlin 3-1 today. Fahey played in both games and the rest of our new signings also played a part in either 1 or both of the games except for Quigley who has a minor knock.

That pretty much covers it. I don't know to what extent the ground development is affecting the playing budget (there's grants and direct sponsorship involved) but we're definitely short of depth. Right now we could put out as strong a first 11 as any team in the league, but injuries to just two key players could be enough to make the wheels come off.

Seriously can't understand why the Galway lads are getting all bent out of shape. If you're that anxious for credit for that result it could be a long season tramping around Division One.

Nesta99
02/02/2014, 7:37 PM
To get the SCG 20% of the grant figure must be raised unless criteria have changed. That would be in the region of 60k. If that is covered by sponsorship great, if not then its a good chunk out of an annual budget and the squad is bound to be affected. If Sligo are weakened for a season or two it would be worth it in the long run to see the facilities improve. It would be a very lucky season not to lose a player or 2 to injury or suspension at some point and have to bring in young lad that might struggle. It will be a bit of a novelty this season for us to have quality throughout the squad to cover any absentees.

I don't think we're that big a scalp anymore. If we ever were obviously. Would think that if we finished third this season it would be a good season. Unless North stays fit and Eric fits in as well as Djilali did. And that's asking a hell of a lot.

Bar St.Pats I think the Sligo squad is every bit as good as any other in the League. Are Sligo fans just looking to lower expectations for the season ahead.

Dundalk midfield is far stronger. After that though you'd expect them to be no lower than 3rd.

I wish. We've loads of quality in midfield but if North gets injured or is in a similar state of 'fitness' as at the end of last season, we don't have another recognised striker. On top of that, with Peers out probably until midway through the season, all we need is one injury to give us a centre-half crisis. In terms of depth, we're lagging well behind Pats, Dundalk, Cork and Derry.

Who got the goals, drogs must have switched off a ht or was it Waterford showed up.

We started we a every in-experienced side. We started with a 16 year old on goal. 3/4 of the back four were under 20. Think midfield average was 22. Second half we played more experience players and by all accountings were much better. We had a few trialist playing as well.

Why is that Fivesilver?

Which part?

Not worried about the result as it's first game back, and a lot of new faces. Plus Galway were always going to be a bit more motivated (DISCLAIMER: NOT A DIG AT GALWAY - PUT DOWN THE STICK).

Worried about depth because we're giving playing time to U19s who are losing nearly every game at their own level. They're demonstrably not the standard. What happens if we lose North? Or Henderson? And you're not going to go a season without a few knocks to key players. If we have half the injuries we had last season or the previous one, we could find ourselves in a very deep hole.
