Oh the 1936 win is listed under Irish Free State!

I dont know what I meant. It's weird, I have 4 on my list don't know why i didn't see them. 1994 vs Germany, 1951, 1956 and 1960 vs West Germany. I don't have the 1936 game so maybe that wasn't an official game? I have a game we played against Germany and lost 2-1 in 1970-05-09 in Berlin, but no record for Dublin. I need to update my lists!
We'll let you off this time. One more slip though and it'll be a night in the cells with Gerrit.

Not many people know that now, but there you are. We wouldn't have the Jack Charlton era except that a makeshift irish team managed to beat a West German team, with aplomb.
NI only tried it with abomb.

Assuming both teams beat Gibraltar then we have to beat one of the others where Scotland lose and match the rest of their results. Best hope seems to be Scotland to slip up against Georgia in a hopefully tricky away fixture.

Definitely jumping the gun on this, but considering we're now in third spot, has anyone looked at the potential opponents?
Holland almost a certainty,
Israel (although Bosnia could pip them),
Ukraine too.
Slovenia
Hungary
Russia or Montenegro (the last match between them in Petersburg is a decider)
Norway
1 from Albania/Portugal/Denmark - a poxy group of the highest order.
I'd expect whoever comes third in that final group will qualify automatically. I'd imagine Holland, Ukraine, Russia will be seeds. I'm not sure if it's possible for us to be seeded, given Hungary and Norway's improvement.
If we're not seeded <shudders>, but even if we were to be seeded, I still wouldn't fancy us, I'd be praying for Israel or for Slovenia to mess up and hope that Estonia or Lithuania can capitalise. Even Hungary.

For their behaviour in the last decade alone they should be severely sanctioned. Football in the Balkans is racist, sectarian, ethnically divided and in real trouble, yet it's very rare to see the London-led media (who guide our own crew) in reporting on it with the same orgasmic delight as even minor incidents in Russia. Mainly because nobody gives a damn about the Balkans, until the next war erupts.

If proof was ever needed that you don't need to be a strong technical team to have success at international level then the North are it. Yes they have a favourable group with an unprecedented collapse by the first seed but it is still very impressive. Maybe we hired the wrong O'Neill

According to http://www.footballseeding.com/national-ranking-uefa/ we would currently be ranked 21st in UEFA.
What we want is for these guys to finish 3rd.
Group A: Turkey (26th) ,
Group B: Israel (27th),
Group E: Estonia (29th) or Slovenia (38th)
Group H: Norway(23rd)
Most are already third just need Israel to hold off Bosnia, and Turkey to hold off Netherlands for them both to keep third. Need Croatia to over take Norway and drop Norway into 3rd.
A little more far fetched would be below, but would also help us be seeded for the playoff draw - if we make it.
We can also root for Montenegro (32nd) to somehow nip Russia (15th) for 3rd in G.
In Group C we could hope for Slovakia (24th) to slip behind Ukraine (14th).
I left out Group F, in which Hungary(19th) are in third, so it might help if Finland(35th) could reel them in.

Worth noting that if Denmark lose away to Portugal in their last match, Albania need one win from their last two games to qualify - and join Iceland, Wales and the North.
They were a minute away from a 0-0 draw against Portugal last night as well, having beaten them in Lisbon.

I think that now there is a serious chance that Russia will get 2nd, unless Sweden beat Austria tonight. Russia played some good football on Saturday (though flicking between it and the Dubs match made me realise that such behaviour is poison if you want to watch soccer) and are pumped up. They've 9 points to come now and only a Swedish win tonight means they'll be 2nd. Facing Sweden will not be fun!

Norway, Slovenia, Turkey are quite close to us in the rankings, what are the chances they'd catch us by the time the draw is made? Is there an outside chance we'd catch Hungary? I've been slaving over the other groups for an hour now but I can't wrap my head around the co-eff system.

We will probably need to beat Germany or Poland to stay ahead of Norway because they should win at least one more (they have Malta and Italy to play). A win and loss for Norway would leave them about 26439pts. A draw and loss for us would leave us about 26082pts.
Turkey have Iceland and Czech to play, we're hoping they win one or whatever it takes to stay ahead of Netherlands, but realistically I don't see them picking up much more co-efficient points than we will (they like us have the two table toppers to play), but if they do then they will pass us. For example if we lose and draw and Turkey win and draw then they will pip us by about 100 pts and be seeded ahead of us.
Slovenia have Estonia (1/2 favourites tonight - so expecting wins), San Marino and Lithuania to play. They could pick up alot of points - could be quite close. I think three wins gives them about 26241 pts and a loss and a draw gives us 26082 pts (from what I understand from the page http://www.footballseeding.com/national-ranking-uefa/).
Hungary have Faroes and Greece so I would say no chance of catching them.
A win against Poland might be absolutely critical to being seeded for the playoff if we make it.

Okay last word for now. It is a bit premature, and there are too many permutations to make your head spin even where we want some teams to do well but not too well!
So simply as it stands now
Croatia are automatic best placed third place.
Ukraine (14), Russia (15), Hungary (19) and Ireland (21) would be seeded.
Turkey (26), Israel (27), Albania (31) and Estonia (38) would be unseeded.

I hate the term to "owe" in football but i'd love to see us get one over on Israel, the closest they would ever have been to qualifying in a long long time and we could take that from them :0

15 Ireland
So win win for Ireland give us 21 points so Germany must beat Georgia to top the group.
Germany 22 they win v Georgia and lose to us.
Ireland 21 we win v Germany and Poland
Ireland 21 we win v Germany and Poland
Germany 20 draw v Georgia and lose to us.
Ireland 21 we win v Germany and Poland
Germany 19 lose v Georgia and lose to us.

i've albania finishing 2nd in their group - they are a point behind denmark but the danes have played a game more and their last fixture is away to portugal. that puts denmark third who are well ahead of us.
i've slovenia to finish 3rd in their group but they are behind us in point anyway and would be unseeded.
so... as you say to be seeded in the playoffs we'd need to catch hungary and stay ahead of the turks - which means a win in warsaw i think.

Think about this and put yourself in the shoes of a nerdy footy fan standing at Lansdowne Road in the early 80s:
Iceland, Albania, NI and Wales qualify or are on the verge. Turkey, former World Cup semi-finalists but who used to be so cr@p even David O'Leary once scored against them, disappoint by coming third, ahead of thoroughbred Holland in fourth. It's a shock that Greece, former European champions, are now sh1t (again).
Russia, the biggest country in Europe, are struggling and mighty Italy only beat Malta 1-0 a few days ago. Hungary, the country that once revolutionised football haven't qualified for a generation and might still not qualify this time.
Time stands still for no man, or football country.
And some people think international football is boring.
Crosby87

Just having a look at the odds to qualify (http://www.oddschecker.com/football/euro-2016/to-qualify): we're at 5/4 whilst you'll get between 12/1 and 7/1 for Scotland.

Or 6/4 to Qualify with Paddypower, or much much more likely 1/2 not to qualify.
The results last night now have Ukraine as automatic 3rd place qualifiers now instead of Croatia. And Sweden in the playoffs instead of Russia. But it doesn't really change much from Ireland's stand point. Still precariously perched as seed but really we need to beat Poland (or Germany) to make sure that Israel, Norway, Turkey or Slovenia don't out rank us in the UEFA co-efficient system. We also have to rely on Turkey and Israel holding off Netherlands and Bosnia respectively to hold on to their 3rd spots. And hope that Albania don't overtake Denmark.
Some notes on the different scenarios here: http://fog2014.blogspot.ie/2015/09/irelands-precarious-path-to-france-2016.html

At Sweden v.Austria last night.
The home team were so awful, even Ireland might win there...
Austria however, looked a formidable side, looked out of our league currently.
For all its detractors, I think the increased euros has being an overwhelming success so far as has the spreading out of games. I think the better chances of qualifying has provided massive incentive to many teams and it is amazing to see some of the teams that are in automatic qualifying spots. Perhaps the only top seed that has run away with things is England but their group is very easy.
It at least means that every four years, a large proportion have competitors have good qualifying chances. Unlike the WC qualifiers which is becoming all the more difficult particularly when hosted in Europe.
