No worries, I'll get off work next weekend and play :D

Whats wrong with Deans?

He's absolutely ****e.

In saying that, he'll still start when fit I'd say. Cousins seems to like him, and he's captain.

Ah the immortal thread returns...

Id agree, wouldnt rate Deans but Cousins will pick him. Flood is injured so he will prob start with Deans and Haverty centre backs, Dowling right full and Lee left side

Dowling played center half against drogheda and did alright would anyone say hes in with a shout of playing as a CB this season?

De Town

When everyone is fit, I'd like to see us go with

Dowling Hope Haverty Lee

My guess at Cousins' favourite back four would be

O'Reilly Deans Haverty Lee

I think Dowling looks decent at center back but playing him there leaves us with very little cover at right full with O'Rielly out injured so while I'd like to play Dowling at CB my back four would have to be

Dowling Haverty Deans Cronnin

I like Jeff Flood personally but I dont think he played in pre-season did he so I'd go for experience with Deans same goes regarding Lee and cronnin.

Flood is out with broken foot, id imagine that starting against Mervue will be Dowling Deans Haverty Cronin, based on fitness of other players at the moment

yes the thread you read and weep afterwards and realise how good the team used to be ... :-(

anyway onwards and upwards, this is the season to step up to the mark and get promotion and hopefully the lads will get mentioned in the same breath in future years as digger, mumbles, vinny etc Come on De Town

I actually had thought of bumping this thread the other day but I forgot. Hmm, best back 4 at the moment? James Treacy McDonagh Lee or maybe Treacy McDonagh McCarthy Lee. Starting XI, hard to know what he'll go with on Friday but I'll guess;

Bennion
Treacy
McCarthy
McDonagh
Lee/Tyrrell if Lee is out
Quinn
Gillespie
Salmon
Purdy
O'Sullivan
Shaw

De Town
06/03/2013, 1:00 PM
Treacy has to be played in the centre, didn't look comfortable at right full in the first half against Bray but he's been immense when in the centre in the little time I've seen him play so far.

For Friday, I hope it'll be

James Treacy McDonagh Lee

But Tyrell will probably be playing due to Mick being injured. Once Havo is back he'll slot in at right back and Colly can be pushed further forward.

We can't have James out a right back. He is too valuable in the middle. Havo is only out for one game!

Longfordian

Bit of a problem accommodating Salmon, Gillespie, James, Purdy, Quinn and O'Sullivan in the team when all are fit. Not bad options to have though.

Quinn can slot in at left back like in pre-season. Lee will find it hard to get a place.

I'd agree that Treacy has been superb at CB but for this one game I'd move him to RB and play Colly higher up with McCarthy and McDonagh at CB with Tyrell LB with Mick Lee expected to be out.

However, I think our best back 4 is Haverty, Treacy, Hope and Lee......Some great options this year.

Completely off-topic, but anyone know why Dundalk suddenly seem to be calling themselves The Town?

Longfordian
07/03/2013, 12:39 PM
They've always referred to themselves as that as far as I can remember anyway. Just a general Dundalk thing rather than Dundalk FC specifically I think.

Cheers, I've always thought it was the Lilywhites nickname, but The Town seems to be adopted more and more now.

Its the first time in a long time we have real strength in depth across the back 4.. I'd expect McDonagh to start tomorrow, as we should expect to have a lot more of the ball, and from previous years Salthill were never a long ball team, negating the need for McCarthy (for now). McDonagh although not the fastest will drop off, pick the ball up from the keeper and look to get things moving from the back. Alongside him will be Treacy with the two full backs being James and Tyrell I would imagine. With Des Hope, Mick Lee and Havo all to come back, things are looking good in this department.

I lived with a Dundalk fan. Its a thing to say in Dundalk The Town when supporting Dundalk FC! bit strange but true.

Pretty sure Athlone also call themselves the town as well don't they? Here was me thinking Longford was the only town in Ireland..

I'm late to the party this year, where is Des Hope?

Longfordian
08/03/2013, 5:19 PM
Injured, he had a knee op but is expected back in training in the next week or two apparently. Signed up for the season anyway so hopefully he's back fully fit soon. Seems a good lad and is a solid player.

Ah great stuff, I read he had signed but then could see no more mention. Great player for us last year.

Haverty
Flynn
Sullivan
Tyrrell

Well I don't want to be negative before the season's even begun so.. to give credit where it's due he was good in the play offs, generally. Hopefully he's just back up.

More diplomatic than the response I had written, but decided against! However, I don't think he's as bad as some make out, but at this stage even he must consider himself as back up!

The goal he gave away against Limerick in pre-season was horrendous. Although im not a huge fan of Pat Sully at right-full. With Havo suspended for the 1st game he might play Sullivan right full and Deans centre half but more likely hel go with young Mulhall.

Personally, I think our best 4 defenders are Haverty, O'Sullivan, Flynn and Tyrell. I think when everyone is fit and free from suspensions that is the back 4 most would agree on. Of late Haverty has been playing centre back with O'Sullivan right full, it will be interesting to see if TC continues with this

I prefer Sulli at right full as we lose the power of Havo going forward. Jamie Mulhall excites me greatly though, some future ahead great to see.

Back in the Premier Division .... How does the 2015 starting line up rate against the 2001/2002 and 2007 teams ?

way stronger. more experience in defence, midfield and attack. goalkeeper is probably slightly weaker.

After Flynn's careless sending off, it's looking like we'll be fielding the most inexperienced back 4 ever to line out for the Town in a Premier Division game this Saturday. Potentially looking like:

Beirne - Hughes - O'Reilly - Mulhall

With the inability of the older players to be be able to tackle properly (and then getting themselves booked/sent off), maybe it's for the best that the younger lads are getting more game time than what might have been expected.

McGlynn played as a right full with Drogheda and Bray so he should take that spot before Beirne. Powell, Haverty and Rossiter are then ruled out?

Town Legend
26/03/2016, 3:19 PM
Rossiter and Powell looked like hamstring injuries, don't know how serious. Rhys still out, Flynner suspended. Don't know what injury Haverty has.

That leaves Mulhall, O'Reilly, Beirne, Noack Hofmann and Hughes (who I think is actually a centre mid). Also as Briuk said McGlynn could play back there.

Tonight could easily end up with 7 or 8 put past us or we could end up with a 0-0!

Longfordian
26/03/2016, 5:11 PM
Don't see it being 7 or 8 but certainly 3 or 4 nil would be no surprise at all. The squad looked light on defenders from the start.
