Disappointed as I had backed Stoke at a decent price, not far off though, Whelan had a shot blocked near the end too but Cech would
no doubt have saved it anyway, still they took two points off Arsenal.

He and Whelan both played well.

Not sure if I'm allowed say this (:)), but I actually thought it was a pretty frustrating performance from Walters. Plenty industry but very little quality. His rushed, misplaced pass when they had Arsenal outnumbered on the counter attack in the first half was really poor and he was caught carelessly offside once or twice as well. He should have anticipated Adam's lovely cross near the end also but was too slow to react. Don't think he offered much threat overall, it was crying out for a bit of Shaqiri magic actually as Bojan had a poor day also. Thought Arnautovic was about the best of them and Whelan was very effective alright.

Did you see the assist ? if he meant that, (I chose to believe he did) it was a remarkably well seen and executed ball.

Jonny won POTY award at the FAI awards. Brady and Wes were the others nominated but neither came close really.

MON gave an interview and had one or two quips for Tony O'Donoghue. I love MON but talk about a grudge. All in good fun maybe.

Connor Ronan won under 17 award. Had me worrying about Grealish!

What were the barbed quips? anything in the line of...
"well possibly Tony you had your face so far up the backside of the rte panel that you failed to notice that we played a good campaign and qualified on merit, but now you are getting all excited by the prospect of the bandwagon taking off, a bandwagon that was made possible by the effort of players and a management team that you were quick to deride with stupid moronic questions about their ability and their decisions"

Flip that would be brilliant.

I'd say he meant it, I mean, i think it was pretty instinctive, he got his foot on the ball and dropped it into the right area for a forward to
run onto, whether he specifically meant for that player is somewhat irrelevant, he put it into the right area ie not too close to the keeper,
so definitely intentional, I mean he could have pot it into row Z but that is hardly a sensible option. So good game for Walters.

Sat out training twice this week.

Does this lad have an issue that precludes him from participating in training sessions?

Stuttgart88
22/03/2016, 9:11 PM
Yes. He's a lazy, flaky good for nothing useless lump, as you have pointed out plenty of times before he turned out to be our best player of the campaign by a country mile.

I wasn't saying that! It was a genuine question.

Keane is coming back from U.S. Brady was taken off injured at weekend. Long playing 90 minutes every week and back from injury. I get all of that.

Walters is in and out of the team at Stoke. You would think he'd be fresh as a daisy. But every Intl gathering he seems to sit out training sessions.

I was simply wondering if it was a long-term issue.

TBH, no one really cares about his training once he continues to deliver on the pitch as he has done all of the Euro campaign.

Walters is supposed to be one of the hardest work players on the pitch according to an article I read recently.

Born out by these stats, stamina 91

http://www.futhead.com/16/players/3152/jonathan-walters/

Maybe he sits out training becasue of all the effort he puts in during the match?

In fact you would be hard pushed to find a higher stamina rathing but I did find Kevin De Bruyne on 92

You do know we're not playing them at FIFA, right?

I do, but they are a pretty decent guide, in fact we are lucky to have them, the game makers obviously put a lot of
effort into making their game realistic so we should be thankful for them, I mean opta do stats but you have to
pay for them now, however we can get these stats for free, I mean the company that makes the EA gets well
over $1 billion in revenue so they can afford to put a lot of time and money into gathering the data so I expect
their stats are better than what Opta provide (at a price!).

The Off The Ball guys were saying he's going back to Stoke for treatment on his hamstring, but that he's expected back to attend the Switzerland game and hopefully be involved for Tuesday. They were talking about how "it's the most Jonathan Walters thing ever" to make such an effort even though he can't play. Now, if only we could get the lazy scoundrel to do a bit of training.

Shay Given impresses but Jon Walters struggles in Stoke loss at Everton

FW Jon Walters, 4 -- Looking a spent force with each and every poor showing from the bench and he was the wrong player to bring into a side needing pace through the middle. An unforgivable miss having been given the chance to put the ball into an open net by Arnautovic.

GIVEN: Fully to blame… for the fact it wasn't a heavier defeat on his 450th Premier League appearance 7

WHELAN: One terrific volley during Stoke's early purple patch but could do nothing about goal deluge at wrong end 6

WALTERS: A couple of mis-cues with half chances on a frustrating return to the starting line up 6

How Big Jon Walters and Shay Given still get games for Stoke is beyond me

Jon Walters getting beat at 2 headers there that led to goals is whats great about footy today xxx

Get Jon Walters off. What's he offering?

Why why why why why why why is Jon Walters still getting into a premier league starting eleven

Offside with the whole line to look across, then misses the chance anyway. Few minutes later at total fault for the goal. Jon Walters

Jonathan Walters hits a cross like he takes a penalty, hard and true and without much thought for direction.

Lovely goal for Walters today. Low ball from wide right was met by Walters on the right of the box with a sublime first time lob over the keeper and in off the left post. Now, he may not have meant it exactly but it was a beauty.

In fairness, if someone like Murphy or Sammon scored that goal people here would be questioning if it was intentional.

Let's be honest, guys.

Watched it again; still don't think he meant it to go in like that.

Gareth McAuley has more goals (3) than any Irish player this season.

Seamus Coleman the leading Irish goalscorer with (2).

I'd say this is well on course to being the worst ever PL season in terms of Irish goals.

It's hard to see where they are going to come from.

Even if Walters or Long were to go on a run they would be doing well to match the tallies they have hit in recent seasons.

I saw Walters' goal on Twitter. I can see why the "did he mean it" questions are being asked, but what else might he have meant? He simply added a touch, but to what ends? Anywhere in the near 2/3 of the goal would have been a gimme for the keeper. He's not stupid. If he didn't mean to have a go then all that's left is a cross to the back post but, in my opinion, it'd have needed a cross towards the 6 yard line to be of any value. He'd therefore have needed a very different touch. I'm not saying he tried to do exactly what he did but in my opinion I think he instinctively thought glancing the ball high and wide of the keeper would have had a chance or at least have caused panic Don't underestimate instinct.

Watched the first half only and thought they both played well - Walters had one saved very well if a little fortuitously at the near post in the opening 5 minutes and did the usual "put himself about" for the remainder of the half even if with little effect. It was a decent shift. Thought Whelan was ok too. Something must have gone seriously awry in the second half though with the entire team.
