PP beat me to it, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Barca or any other euro team for that matter would not fancy us at Celtic Park, on our travels in the CL has been a different story unfortunately:mad:

the exclamation marks were just for annoyance factor sorry I will stop now .
Celtic Park is a fortress and teams would be nervy of going there but these days you have to produce home and away and celtic need to get the second part right..

You carry right on with the exclamation marks! We all have our foibles - mine as you can see are the incessant bloody smileys with which I pepper every post.
As for your second comment, we certainly do need to sort out our away form in the Champions League. We've not done too badly in the UEFA Cup (wins over Blackburn, Liverpool and Boavista last year) but we need to make the step up where it counts.
Anyway, as for that Liam Miller... ;)

A former Villa reserve is starting on Celtic's left wing - and is one of their best players this year. Not to mention that Kinsella was playing for the very same reserve team until quite recently. Don't knock it.

Is this the same left winger that's attracted attention from Tord Grip and Sven Goran Eriksson and is in line to play in the next game? It was Taylor that sold him, his recent track record at Villa wasn't anything to shouit about, same goes for his transfer dealings. Where you plays doesn't matter, if you're good you'll make it.

wouldn't rule out Thompson making an appearance in euro04 for one of the favourites, now wouldn't that be something;)

Given their options on the left wing, no.

I would say Celtic are an average team on the pitch, some great players and some poor ones, but off the field they are, well, massive. Huge support and a worldwide brandname, but in Scotland imo they will never really elevate beyond being an average side in Europe.

This thread is a bit of a blast from the past, but does anyone know if Miller has found a club for next season? If he hasn't, I don't think there's any way he should be in tomorrow's squad, as he wouldn't be fit, and because we've a lot of younger CMs who'll be playing in the premiership this year (McCarthy, McCann, Fahey).

Preston would be good move for him, he needs a team that play decent football rather than some of the hoof ball some Championship clubs play

What a fall from grace. Miller gets into the squad playing for Hibs and Andy Reid can't get a look in? Pathetic.

He trained wth the Cork City team for a few days at once stage.

This is another Liam Brady/John Hughes hook up, Graham Stack, Anthony Stokes, Stephen Bradley, Patrick Cregg and now Miller, Brady should get an award from FAS.
One thing that is for certain is that Miller has taken a frickin' huge paycut (as has Stokes) to go to Hibs, they are one of the better run Scottish clubs and stick rigdly to their pay structure....hope all works out well for him to be fair, its hardly his fault Trap is picking him
Edit....he (Brady) also hooked Stephen O'Donnell up with Falkirk

Absolutely agree. Its a disgrace he is in the squad. How Trap has been allowed get away with it is beyond me. I have lost all respect for him for the way he has treated some of our players like Dean Kiely and Andy Reid, while bending over backwards to include a player like Liam Miller. There have been tribunals set up for less scandals than this!!

Yeah, but Liam Miller didn't refuse to stop a late night drinking session & have a row with management afterwards. maybe Trap preferred Miller's attitude around the camp and maybe (as I was - for once) Trap was impressed by Miller's performance against Nigeria.
I'd have Reid over Miller any time but I don't think it's a disgrace. Reid has at least partly been the architect of his own downfall.

While I believe Andy Reid should be in the squad, I'd say at least 75% of managers in the top two tiers of English football would pick Westwood ahead of Kiely if given the choice.
I'm a big Kiely fan and still rate him, but Westwood is probably the best keeper in the Championship, and unlike Kiely, actually plays.

Agree totally on Westwood.

10/09/2009, 11:22 AM
The two situations have a lot of parallels actually- both Kiely and Andy Reid were essentially disruptive (or perceived to be) when left out of starting XI's, but were not good enough to warrant that sort of attitude of entitlement.
Trap wants his bench players to be hungry, but accepting, of their role if not chosen to start, and I can understand his desire to eliminate moaners from the group (I'm sure we've all played with moaners who don't play as much as they like and let everyone know about it, and if you have, you know it doesn't help things at all).
On talent alone, Andy Reid and Kiely should be in the squad 100%, but talent is just part of the equation, and none of us on this site know all the details, except for Manblue and thedoc.

If Trapp rates him (Which you would assume given his repeated inclusions) why hasn't he been recomended to some clubs in Italy. He's on a free. Low risk involved..

Maybe Miller wasn't willing to go?
Or maybe the scouts have access to Premier League footage that shows Miller is consistently inconsistent?

Sweet Jebus, what a moanfest. Kiely, who isn't getting his game for his club, walked out after Westwood was not unreasonably picked ahead of him for the second half of a friendly. Reid has been barely able to get into a bad Sunderland side, has had words with Trapattoni and doesn't really fit the formation.
Trapattoni is a manager with an incredible record, good staff, and a very credible record as Ireland manager (when's the last time we were comfortable for second place at this stage of a group?).
Still, the Championship Manager experts and assorted professional whingers insist that it could be so much better if only their debatable suggestion were acted upon, that the guy who's actually getting results and has a track record among the best in the game is somehow inferior to them in team selection and tactics. I don't know why I still read the Ireland sub-forum.

i know he gets a lot of stick but i hope this moves works out and hes playing week in/out. its like time has stopped for him since his celtic days. the years have gone by and he has wasted his talent. hes a good footballer in fairness. with him and stokes there maybe they will help hibs to have a good season and maybe we will have 2 better options for the squad in the near future(i know miller is already in it at the minute).

With once promising keeper Graham Stack and Kurtis Byrne (son of former LOI and Celtic player Paul) also at Hibs, they could be the team to watch out for from an Irish perspective.

If anything this strengthens Miller's chances of inclusion in future squads, as I've said Liam Brady ansd John Hughes have a pretty good relationship so this is very possibly the result of the Irish management team going out ansd using contacts to hook Miller up with a club...he'll be around a lot longer and sure if he starts performing to the same level he reached in his last spell in Scotland that may not be a bad thing

I hope his little spell without a club has been the reality check he needed. I thought he was excellent against Nigeria, let's hope it all clicks into place for him at Hibs. A World Cup start is a hell of a motivation if he can finally fulfill his potential this season.

I thought he was excellent against NigeriaMe too, and it's on t6he back of that that he keep his place. He was actually remarkably robust in that game and it was also his flick to Andrews that made Keane's goal.
Here's hoping his career kick starts again, but I have to say that like-for-like I think Reid is both better and more versatile.

Its good, of course, that Miller has signed for some-one. At least now he can be compared to other players in terms of his form, fitness levels, contribution to matches.
Let's face it, he's in the squad, so at least now he'll be sharper

Miller apparently had a very impressive home debut for Hibernian today. Stokes scored twice and Graham Stack also played. Looking like all three will be central to the team this year and it could be a good place for them to work their way into the international setup from (or in Miller's case stay there and get back into the first team).
Not sure if BBC Alba is available on the Sky platform in Ireland, but they will be showing the game at 8pm. It's also on iPlayer at 8 for anyone in the UK or the north.

For all the guff he gets on this board for whatever reason I genuinely don't think I've ever seen him perform poorly in the Irish shirt. A lot of average performances sure, but he's always held his own. Which is more than I can say for a lot of the other members of the current squad.

There's no question in my mind that Miller is a talented footballer. The issues have always been motivation, consistency, and willingness to do the dirty work.
Maybe the lack of interest in him following his time with Sunderland/QPR has woken him up a little bit.
It's not too late for him to become the player we all hoped he would become.
