Shane Duffy was delighted to return to first team action at the weekend with a 45-minute run out against Accrington Stanley: http://www.rovers.co.uk/news/article/shane-duffy-2545584.aspx

Accrington Stanley? Who are they?

You're thinking of Termonbarry Alberts.

Brilliant goal line clearance from Duffy just now to save Blackburn from a defeat at home to Bolton. Brilliant defending when Heskey looked like he had to score (no predictable jokes please :)). I only flicked it on while ago but apparently his been a big threat in the other box as well from set pieces.

On telly at the moment, Blackburn playing Burnley. Just started.

They'll be wondering how they lost that. The commentators were saying repeatedly what a threat Duffy is in the opposition box, that he gets his head on more balls than any other player. He had two chances to equalise near the end, one he snatched at to put over the bar, the other a decent header but too close to the keeper who tipped over.

He had a really horrible moment just before half time, making a complete hash of trying the chest the ball down, then playing a near hospital pass back towards goal. His full back rescued the situation. Looks a no-nonsense albeit a bit clumsy CB, the kind we already have quite a few of. I'd like to see him play his way into the squad though.

Header near the end. Think Blackburn's game against Leeds is on Sky too.

Was looking through whoscored there recently and noticed that Duffy was second only to Alan Judge in their Championship player ratings.

http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/7/Seasons/5827/Stages/12497/PlayerStatistics/England-Championship-2015-2016

I then had a look into Duffy's profile on their site to see what his form was like and it says he was man of the match in five of his last ten games.
http://www.whoscored.com/Players/75692

Might get a chance to impress in the friendlies?

Stuttgart88

I doubt he has any chance of making the squad for France, barring injury to a key player of course, but I think he should be part of the pre-tournament squads as it's almost certain O'Shea will retire and Duffy has every chance to feature in the next campaign. He needs to be bedded in, succession planning and all that.

Seems to me the team/squad is getting stronger and stronger.

It is not so much a problem of who to pick but who to leave out.

And there is still a generous 150-1 on offer to win the Euros

That site's ratings formula loves him. He was the no.1 rated Championship player in 2013/14 whilst on loan at relegated Yeovil. And even during last year's injury-hit campaign with Blackburn, he still managed to be the 12th highest-rated player in the championship. His high number of aerial duals won and clearances made lead to him earning high ratings, this is despite him having a low tackles per game rate and also a low passing accuracy percentage. Haven't seen him play at all recently but I always liked him the few times I seen him play for Blackburn and Everton.

I suppose if you are clearing a lot of balls up field your passing percentage will suffer.
O Shea is a better passer but does not get his head on the ball so much.
Depends what you want out of a defender I guess, but getting you head on the ball
is a major part of it for me, at least until you play a team which likes to play it on the ground.

He also has 5 man of the match awards ( I think alan judge has 6), that seems to weight quite heavily in the
stats, although you would perhaps expect the two to do hand in hand somewhat and indeed they seem to.

Given there are 22 players on the pitch in any one game that is pretty good going, by chance you could expect
1-2 per season.

I like Duffy and am surprised he hasn't featured a bit more for ROI but his only chance of making the Euros is if we have a spate of injuries.
Defo one for the future all the same.

You must have been watching some other game.
Mark Lawrenson, commentating on the game for BBC Radio Five Live had high praise for Duffy, saying he was "one of the best headers of the ball [he's] seen".
Michael Owen singled him out for praise after the first half an hour when Duffy put his head where most wouldn't put their foot to block a shot, saying it was an example of "brilliant defending".

Also worth noting that Duffy is seen as captain material by Paul Lambert in the absence of Rovers favourite Grant Hanley.

Blackburn handled Payet and Emenike well enough until they had a man sent off shortly after half time and that is what turned the tie. There was a difference of class, but they were even enough for the first half. In the second half they struggled big time.

Lenihan looked tidy, had a decent strike and showed plenty of desire in the midfield.

Duffy linked with a £5 million transfer Sunderland if they stay up. Not bad for a useless player.

thank god i'm not the only one who thought that Duffy played well. I think you are right when it went 11 v 10 it started to fall apart and strangely I thought the 10 v 10 suited West Ham and their width/creativity even more!

Didn't really notice Lenihan too much.

Why am I not surprised, that after reading Duffy's performance being likened to a donkey, it actually transpired that he was brilliant defensively.

paul_oshea
22/02/2016, 9:18 PM
Ya it transpires he was brilliant in defense and they lost 5-1 because of all their forewards.

CD how is Martinez managing mcgeadys game time?

paul_oshea

Forwards*

If he was captian surely he'd be organising his defense regardless of being a man down. Tbey were all at sea at sixes and sevens falling all over the place and being pulled everywhere.I shouldn't even need to justify the point when they conceded 5, only on this forum :D

Just saw it, a bit unlucky. He was only kicking the ball but Boyd came from his blind slide and he caught him instead. Lack of awareness alright and the Sky panel reckon his teammates should have given him a shout.

Shane scored a last-minute winner for Blackburn yesterday after a free kick caused trouble in the Brentford box. He really belted the ball into the top of the net when it rolled to him at the edge of the box.

That celebration was absolutely class!

Next year looks like Duffy's year. I'm sure MON will be willing to afford a chance to his fellow Derryman (deservedly) and Duffy is likely to be playing in the PL. It feels like forever that I've waited for him to come in to the side. In fact, it has been close to forever. It's 7 years since he made his debut for the NI under 21's!

DeLorean
20/03/2016, 8:21 PM
Wow... that's a cracking finish. Kind of similar to Celtic's dramatic winner yesterday in a few ways, except much closer in and struck first time. Left foot, same top corner, last minute and into the end with the away supporters which always adds to it.

Damo Delaney nearly scored a tidy equaliser against Foxes on Saturday. I haven't seen the link to Duffy's goal yet but DeLorean's description seems to fit Delaney's effort too?

DeLorean
21/03/2016, 11:12 AM
There's more finesse attached to Delaney's effort, the way he takes it on the chest and controls his shot (almost perfectly) took real composure and skill in such a tight space. Duffy's is just a first time rocket but the kind of chance that flies high into the stands more often than not. He did brilliantly to hit it so hard but still keep it down.

That Celtic goal was a screamer. Very telegenic.

DeLorean
21/03/2016, 12:35 PM
Yeah Duffy's is nowhere near as good as that just in case I've got your hopes up! Just kind of similar in it's timing and the way it flew in, etc. Blackburn played most of the second half with ten men actually as well which I hadn't realised.
