I noticed that real had the spanish flag on the front of their jerseys.. is this a new thing??
have noticed before that bohs and rangers have their respective country flags on the back of their jerseys.

i think the english clubs should put their george flag on the front (or better still the union jack). It would be a real seller to all the fans ;)

I watched the Chelsea vs Juve game and at the end I switched over to RTE to hear the panel castigating Liverpool (with the usual digs at Charlton) and I thought Real Madrid must have hammered them. Instead I find that Liverpool had won at fortress Madrid:eek: A fantastic result and all I hear is about Liverpool playing to a system and that Man U don't. What a load of cod's wallop (wonder what that is). Don't tell me Man U didn't play to a system again Inter. Some more attractive players ok because they are the richest club in the world afterall but they definitely set out with a defensive system against Inter.

Trappatoni being compared to Charlton - he's in for a rough ride from the Panel guided by the laughing buffoon with the "controversial" statements to get the Panel all hot and bothered.

real madrid officially worlds richest club.. yes utd started with a defensive system against inter & it may now cost them, but point panel were trying to make ( i think) is that utd played more controlled football
and held onto ball better... how many times has dunphy had a go at utd / arsenal for not having good defensive set up's and in arsenals case being to attractive always trying to play football but not enough heart/passion defensive teamwork.. yet liverpool played last night with a lot of heart / passion / teamwork and got a great result and end up getting castigated  not so long ago at start of season utd were terrible at back & van der sar was finished !!!! as per mr dunphy and also la liga was the best league in the world
so take mr dunphy as talking s***e a lot of the time he loves attenion and playing up to camera's :ball:

I have to admit I switched the Madrid-Liverpool game off at half time. Woeful

Same here. Dreadful game. A solid professional job by Liverpool, they just didn't give Real any space. While I can appreciate the performance, I'd rather watch paint dry

Great result for the Reds.
Still be cautious in return leg but have to fancy us now.

I suppose if Real score first who knows but it's hard to see past Pool after Reals performance last night.

Momo Sissoko has fractured his foot and will miss Juve vs Chelsea. Could be a blessing is disguise for Juve IMO.

As a Chelsea fan I forsee the same starting line-up as Coventry. Which means Malouda. Which means we effectively start with ten men. So, can we beat Juventus with ten men? Probably, given that I didn't see anything particularly scary about Juve at the Bridge. But there again, we weren't that great either.

United will win easily , Inter are useless going forward at home , 1st half i thought they were the away side , away they will collapse because they just dont have enought quality .

Liverpool know how to win european games at home , can see them winning 2-1.

Their lack of quality could be less obvious away from home though. If they sit back more. They probably don't have the pace to do that and hit anyone on the break though,, unless they start Balotelli.

All 4 english clubs should progress. The draw for the next round will be very interesting. Would be great to see Liverpool V Man U and Arsenal V Chelsea.

I have a feeling Arsenal will go out. Roma beat Chelsea 3-1 in Rome earlier in the campaign, and Arsenal can be rattled. Fancy Roma on pens maybe.

it would be good for the competition if less PL teams made it through. I'm sick of seeing Chelsea-Liverpool meet nearly every year. It's also about time Real Madrid went on a decent run. Fingers crossed they get an early goal tonight otherwise Liverpool will shut up shop and double mark Robben.

He meant since Malouda makes no impact whatsoever on a game, Chelsea will effectively playing with ten men. Have to agree too. Malouda is truly awful, makes Kalou look like Messi.

As for tonights games, I think Liverpool will struggle. They'll be comfortable enough in the 1st half but they'll get nervous in the 2nd half at 0-0 and Real will score. Could go to extra time and penalties with Liverpool scraping through.

Chelsea could find it tougher than expected in Turin, Del Piero still has an appetite for the big games it seems and could produce a top performance. I'll go with 2-0 to Juventus.

Don't forget unless Juve win tonight, it will be Nedved's last ever European match. He will be up for it in a big way!

Nedved has gone off with an injury so Hasan Salihamidzic (a great player who has been criminally under used by Juve) came on, they are 1-0 up (1-1 on agg) Chelsea went very close with a free kick maybe crossing the line, Bayern are 9-1 (nine!!) up on Lisbon on agg... Liverpool seem to be beating Real Madrid with a degree of ease, the most interesting tie at the moment is probably Panathinikos Villareal 1-1 and very tense...

Chelsea have just gone 1-1 Lampard hit the underside of the bar with a deflected shot, might have crossed the line but Essien made sure... Juventus now need 2 goals in the sencond half...

awesome stuff from liverpool should be 5-0 up ( even got a bit of luck on both goals.. torres pull on centre half & very dubious penalty for handball !!) but well deserved 2-0 lead at half time .. only complaint so far is why they not play like this every week:D

uefa should really refund the cost of the trip for the 3000 blancos or frank de bleeckere should make a public apology to them for cheating madrid out of a chance of getting their hands on number 10. i've seen gago play 50+ times and i've never been impressed once. i'd say florentino perez will go nuts in the summer if/when he gets elected. turf out gago, heinze, marcelo, drenthe, saviola, javi garcia, salgado, metzelder and possibly guti and cannavaro also

Edit: 10-1 to Bayern now.

Thankfully I watched Juve-Chelsea. Juve were unlucky I thought and I'm still unsure why their man was sent off? Was it for the tackle? Chelsea looked very ordinary and no real balance to the team. I'd be very surprised if they get to the final again. Then again if they keep Drogba and Carvalho fit you never know. Lampard and Ballack went missing most of the match but will probably get 8/9s in the paper tomorrow.

How bad were Madrid? The reports I've read so far are not kind to them at all.

Ballack covered the most ground out of all the Chelsea players and had the most successful passes.

How serious was the injury, it didn't look that bad... he may yet make the Coppa Italia 2nd leg (late April) and play a part in the title race...

I thought Juventus were a bit unlucky but at the same time they rarely threatend to unlock the Chelsea defence. Del Piero is a class act, but far too much of their attacking link up play goes through him. It's too much pressure on one player and teams like Chelsea can just pack the midfield and double or even triple mark him. Then if Nedved goes off there are real problems, esp as Sissoko was injured - he's not world class going forward but he has a lot of drive and stamina, which Juventus were missing tonight.

I think if Bayern could be a good bet, and I think the match of the round will be at the Dragao Stadium tomorrow night. Atletico are the best attacking team in Europe this season and have ripped Barcelona and Real Madrid's defence apart in the last two weeks. They've a shocking defence but I hope they can get past Porto. Simao is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world on current form (better than the other Portuguese) and Kun Aguero is lethal when running onto balls over the top!

Juve were unlucky with the sending off and it was a game that either could have won.
I thought we looked uncomfortable at times , especially defending and Bosingwa is not a full back . Think we'll struggle against a better team but the return of Essien , Carvlhio and a more up for it Drogba , we might be in with a shout.

Have to applaud Liverpool, thats just a fantastic result .[ Hurt to say that]

Are you on drugs? Lets ignore the fact that only for Casilles, Real would have been about 4-0 down before the penalty decision even happened, and also that overall it could have been about 10-0 and not one bit flattering to Liverpool. And pepe wasn't fouled for the first, unless it's basketball rules we're playing to now? Madrid getting their hands on No.10?!? Hahahahahaha, good one!

One of the most once sided contests between two heavyweights in the history of the competition. Fantastic to see the cocky condescending Real Madrid absolutely humiliated once and for all, if I do say so myself :D I hope they enjoy every painstaking bit of it :p

Reproducing that form in league is what's needed..................still, great performance v Madrid. So amusing listening to Dipstick Dunphy calling it ' bullying' etc. Its nearly as enjoyable to see him compounding his stupidity as it is seeing a better performance!

I didnt watch Liverpool last night so I cant comment on the game itself. However, judging by the result, it was a great performance and night of CL football at Anfield.

I just dont understand why Liverpool threat teams like Madrid with utter contempt in the CL, get in their faces and beat them off the field, yet when Stoke, West Ham, ...... come to Anfield, they sit back give them plenty of the ball.

Real Madrid have been a shadow of themselves since in the Champions League 2003. Knocked out every time in the last 16 once they have to beat a decent team over two games.

They are now the equivalent of a bloated 40 year old former Heavyweight Champion way past his prime. Still hav'nt recovered from the Galacticos experiment so all credit to Liverpool for finally putting them out of their misery.

I can't stand him but I thought Gerrard was superb.

The Liverpoool penalty award was almost identical to the one Ireland got against Georgia.

I started watching the Chelsea game instead, far more entertaining - or at least far more competitive.

No comment on the Chelsea players as we all know them well enough at this stage, but that young Italian guy at Juve - Giovinco? - looks a real handful. Small but very skillful and quick.

Has anyone seen much of him?

Watched the Villareal Pana match last night. It was a pretty decent tie. Villareal should have got a few more though. They had a goal ruled out (Cazorla, iirc) which should have stood and then missed a sitter at the end. I thought Ibagaza was probably their best player on the night.

Some typical comments on here about Liverpool.

When they hammer some teams - Madrid, Inter, Juve, Barca etc its because the other teams are sh1te.

When United do it, United are the best team in the World.

Im not saying Madrid werent poor because they were but they were also made to look poor on the night. As someone said it could have been 10-0 only for Casillas.

Lets see if United put four past Inter tonight who are equally as poor as Madrid.

NeilMcD

Utd do not need to put four past Inter they just need to win the league and be champions of Europe they are going to do and are. THey may even win it again.

I am a neutral but in general I think Man Utd play good football, (not tonight though) so I have no problem with them winning to be honest. Much rather them win than the borefest (with the exception of last night) of Liverpool. Hopefully Barcelona can do it though.
