Given Hodgson's CV and affinity with the international scene it's hard to see him playing silly buggers over Duff's availability.

The rules on this have changed over the years (it was a practice more than a rule anyway). Even if a player does not play the preceding club game the FAI would have every right to bring the player over to Dublin and assess his fitness. It probably wouldn't make the club manager too happy but there is very little he could do about it.

Yes, I was just playing silly buggers. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if a story was made on twisting Hodgsons words a little.

Hodgson is a great manager and man. No question that he would not be standing in Duffs way.

Is there a need to turn every thread into another Andy Reid discussion forum? The arguments are well known and the Andy Reid thread is comprehensive enough as it is.

Not playing on Saturday for Fulham. Hodgson just said he is still injured. Very bad news.

It's not a discussion, until there's a second post on the topic. Well done...you turned it into a discussion.

To be honeset at this stage with Duff I'd take my chances with this injury healing up in a week than a supposedly fit Duff playing the next two games for Fulham and expecting him not to pick up a knock.

Where did you get this from? Here's what RH says on the Fulham website:

“There’s not much chance of Andy Johnson and Danny Murphy being fit for the weekend game," revealed Hodgson. "We’re hoping Damien Duff will be available for the game on Sunday.

    That's dated 4/11

Totally. This could end up being GOOD news. Right now he has 9 more days to heal/not get injured.

I would actually go as far as to say he should not walk down any stairs, eat fish or copulate, or stare any buffalo he comes across in the eye as this makes them aggressive and prone to charging.
It should be a forgone conclusion that not playing, practicing with, watching practice (the odd ball floating into the stands could hit him in the head if he is not paying attention), or eating with the lads (the odd piece of silverware could become dislodged from someones hand and fly into his sternum) for Fulham would be a good thing for us and him....

He just needs to somehow make it to next saturday and although I am concerned his flight to Dublin could pose problems (the odd plane crash could easily cause a broken ankle) I am happy I dont have to worry about him tearing his ACL/MCL/PCL this weekend while walking under a ladder and slipping on a black cat on the way to the game......

    Chances looking slim?!

Fears over Damien Duff's availability for the Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off against France have increased

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has said that he expects injured Duff to miss Sunday's Barclays Premier League game against Wigan.

Duff has an Achilles injury and now appears to be a major doubt for the 14 November opener at Croke Park with the second leg in Paris four days later.

Speaking last weekend, Hodgson had appeared more optimistic about Duff's chances of being available for the World Cup play-off.

"It is very hard stopping Damien playing for the Republic of Ireland. You have to lock him in a cage," added the Fulham boss after Duff came off during the win over Liverpool.

"It's an injury he has been struggling with for a while.

"It stems from his Achilles, although it's a little bit more complicated than that.

"There is no way I would even consider him for Roma. I will ask the medical staff to take as long as they need to try to get him back into shape as quickly as they can.

It could be worse. I certainly don't dread the possibility of McGeady on his favoured left side and Lawrence on the right (as against Italy). Ideally I would want Duff available though obviously.

It'll be a huge blow if he misses out. He's been excellent for us almost every time he puts on the green jersey. And he always seems to conjure something special - be it the run against Cyprus at home, the cross against Cyprus away, winning free kicks that lead to goals...the list goes on.

And when you look at the possible replacements - Lawrence and Hunt - it makes you realise how much of a loss he is. Yes Lawrence and Hunt are decent players, but they're no where near the class of Duff.

True enough but at least we've more cover than other positions. He does win an amount of frees in fairness though and that is probably our best chance of getting a goal.

we need him for home more so than away i reckon, we need to be creative at home and try and nick a 1 - 0 win, duffer is instrumental in creating chances and opening up the defence, and more importantly his crosses are by far the most accurate and dangerous on the team, the french are poor defending crosses and set pieces and duff could really create problems for them.

I would be content with him not playing the second if we dont need to chase a goal from the off, but obviouslly he is more likely to be ready for the wednesday as oppossed to the saturday game. 3-4 days can make a big difference but if he isn't deemed fit for saturday then tehy wont call him up at all....

I know what you mean Paul but then again I think he could be essential in the second leg if we need to hold possession and keep a lead. In the second half in Bulgaria when we were under pressure Duff seemed like the only player keeping a cool head in possession and either finding a green shirt or winning a free.

    I can't beleive this

But, McGeady on the left, Hunt on the right, who knows?!
