The San Marino game has reaffirmed to me that with Ireland - you assume nothing. This will only double Georgia's resolve.

It might double our resolve, but it deprives us of the support. Terrible mistake by the federation to go with the easy option (close to Italy), rather than Turkey or Azerbaijan where we could have recreated a real home match atmosphere.

Calm down, all it has been has moved. We have not got the 3 points yet and there is one thing that Ireland do not do well and that is being cocky.

I agree. The Georgian players should be fired up due to the recent problems in their country and I haven't seen anything yet under Trapatonni to indicate that the dark days are well and truly behind us. It will probably take him a few more competitive games before we really see the fruits of his labours.

I'd be happy with a draw. A win would be nice but a defeat would be a disaster particularly taking the resulting loss of confidence into the Montenegro game and with the possibility of another disaster their our chances of qualification will be almost destroyed before even getting off the ground.

Since Karlsruhe is RIP as stated above why don't they just pop over to Kaiserslautern.

It's a better stadium and suites me just fine with my e150 flight from Kerry to Hahn on the morning of the game that I booked on the back of that crazy lunchtime report AHHHHHH

I am going to personally seek out the head of the Georgian FA and shake his hand for making my trip so much easier.

Arrive to Hahn at 11.50, I should be downing bottles of Blue Nun by the Rhine by 1pm

Geez boys, for a while it looked like this could be going to pennos. I reckon hats off to the boys from the FAI on this one, no doubt once Karlsruhe had been ruled out they mentioned the fact that many boysingreen had bought tickets on the back of the Karlsruhe statement.

Though I would've preferred Karlsruhe, I can't really complain as its still only a wee jaunt up the motorway from Strasbourg...see y'all there...

Anyone flying from the New York/NJ/PA to Frankfurt go to Priceline.com. The return flights cost $672 from Newark to Frankfurt flying out Friday at 5.40pm arriving Frankfurt 7.05am Saturday. Return flight leaves Frankfurt 1.10pm sunday arriving back into JFK at 4.00pm (EST). If you want to gamble and name you own price then you should get it for about $480 return.

Lads, it could be quite fun that weekend...there's also a wine fair on in town! Mind and pack your spare liver...

Annual Wine Market
28 - 31 August and 4 - 7 September 2008

Every year Mainz’s Rosengarten and Volkspark are the sites for the Wine Market, the last weekend in August and the first weekend in September. White wines and rosés from the previous year are offered as well as some reds as well as wines from earlier vintages. It’s a great chance to meet hundreds of vintners and thousands of other wine lovers, discover new wines and simply have fun on a fine summer day.
Mainz boasts no fewer than eight major wine events starting in March with the Wine Tasting Days in Mz-Hechtsheim; the Sekt (sparkling wine) Fest in Mz-Hoefchen; and, Johannisnacht (Summer Solstice) in town in June; the Wine Fest im Kirchenstueck (Mz-Hechtsheim); the Wine Fest in Mz-Ebersheim; and, the Vine-blossom Fest in Mz-Laubenheim, all in July. Mainz-Hechtsheim hosts the Vintners‘ Days festival in September and the Rheinhessen Wine Forum takes place in October in Mainz’s Museum of Ancient Shipping.

As if all that were not enough, virtually every village in and around Mainz on both sides of the river celebrate wine festivals in Spring, Summer and Fall!

What is the most likely way the tickets will be sold, via the FAI or direct from Mainz (the way the Columbia tickets were sold by Fulham).

geysir
28/08/2008, 3:14 PM
This is from part of the fai statement.
"In the interim the FAI has sent a team of staff members to Mainz who are in the process of negotiating a ticketing operation for Irish fans at the stadium in the days leading up to the match"

Dotsy
28/08/2008, 3:29 PM
I'd say a lot of fans will only arrive the day of the match so hopefully tickets will still be available if they are only going to be sold on the ground in Mainz.

Great that its on ,similar to Stuttgart 06 but not so good for hotel rooms as had trouble booking anywhere for 5 days. Got sorted for FriSatSun in town.

Might try somewhere different on Wed Th although it doesnt look to bad a spot at all. Hope the weathers good, Cruise down the Rhine ?

I arrive in Germany on the Thursday and I would be bored in the same place for 5 days. Going to go for Cologne Thursday night. Mainz for Friday and Saturday and the Stuttgart for Monday night, my SUnday is still up in the air.

Wiesbaden is just across the river from Mainz, you can stay in hotels there and walk (about 15 mins) to the center of Mainz...

Darmstadt, Koblenz, Frankfurt a/m, even Mannheim/Heidelburg are possible as places to stay.

Also those going from London, the trip is very much possible via Eurostar, Brussels, then Koln / Frankfurt. Total trip time about 6-7 hours.

Driving from London it would be about 500 miles and maybe 8 hours each way...

Think there is an overnight coach that goes from London to Frankfurt and takes about 14 hours ?

Flying in on the saturday morning. It'll be tight. I'll be in Mainz no earlier than 3.30 maybe as late as 4.45.

Now to score digs and a ticket....

I live about two and a half hours drive from there. Might drive down and bring the tent with me. The only problem is that I have to catch a flight early the next morning from Düsseldorf to München.

Will ya get off the moral highground FFS. This is a football thread for Gods sake.

Wont somebody please think of the children!!:D:D
Hey, I wasn't trying to be sanctimonious or anything, just thought I'd remind that the circumstances are fairly ... fluid at the moment. Technically the trouble's supposed to be all over after all so FIFA could have been deliberately taking their time.

Anyway, that's off topic, it's all sorted & now we can look forward to a good start to our campaign & 3 tasty points on the table :D

Could I assume that those who applied for Georgia tickets have first call on the Mainz ones or is that too obvious ? bearing mind Georgia could well bring a few as they could use it as an opportunity to demonstrate to the world (well not quite the world) their opposition against 'russian aggression'

Count me amongst them! Just booked flights into Weeze from Shannon and coming back on the sunday from Frankfurt to Kerry.

I was looking at the Hahn to Kerry flights this morning. €18 was tempting but decided spending Sunday drinking in Mainz was preferable to getting the train from Tralee up to Dublin.

What would be people's guess for the number of fans that were going to Tiblisi.

The FAI said 1,000.

I imagine those of us who had been offered Tbilisi tickets will get first grabs on Mainz. I hope so anyway. This has cost me enough.

I assume we will get one stand each. Easiest way to do segregation.

What day you going to Podgorica, Green? We're out on Sunday. Better times for flights than Tbilisi but would have loved to have gone there :(. I think we would have got a great reception if we'd gone there but unfortunately it really wasn't possible given the situation.

Roll on the wine festival and roll us out ;)
