Red Bull Salzburg are to host an afternoon press conference (12 midday Irish Time) which is expected to be attended by G Trapattoni.

The conference is a standard "re-commencement" one after the winter break in Austria, however, Trapattoni is widely expected to face a barrage of questions about his future, the answers to which which may or may not p!ss on the FAI's sparklers (due to be lit in Abbotstown later this evening, and widely anticipated within the Association to be the first official announcement regarding the managerial appointment).

This depends on whether or not Trap is in a more talkative mood than he was yesterday, when he requested that the media be moved away from the training area exit for the end of the session, so as not to have to talk to them.

As for coming 3rd in the table, if we have a top manager and he gets the best out of players then we have a team which is at least the equal of Bulgaria.

This is by far the best manager we have ever appointed. The FAI should get credit for taking their time, in the face of pressure from the papers and stabilising the finances so we can afford GioTrap (I'm copyrighting this in case it takes off). The players have no excuses now, they must perform.

Totally agree with this, we have no devine right to qualify but we should as a minimum be competative and I cant see Trappatoni accepting the minimum. The players always had a get out clause for a crap performance ie the manager, that is now gone, they have to stand up and be counted. Cant wait, wanted an experienced international manager not ex premiership has been/never was and we have got a proven winner who is not likely to jump ship when the next premiership job comes along.

Have no concerns over his age as his fitness appears to be good and his enthusiasm for the job is high, lets face it he doesnt need this job or his last few jobs for the money so why else is a 69 year old willing to put his reputation on the line. Happy days and good times ahead.

the only problem I have with that article:

Ireland walked out on the squad in September, citing reasons that later proved to be false, and has since refused to return to the fold.
It's less that Stephen Ireland has refused to turn out for his country, it's more that he hasn't been called into the squad to refuse a place.

“Giovanni will tell him how he once marked Pelé out of a game,” an Italian source said last night. “He’ll show him old pictures and tell him about all the great players he’s worked with.”

:D class

It's less that Stephen Ireland has refused to turn out for his country, it's more that he hasn't been called into the squad to refuse a place.

how do you know?! he staunton tried talking him back, so did erikson, so did dunne, that constitutes refusing to me....

I've been quiet lately all round. Nothing too exciting happening until recently. I'd say I'm happy enough with the Trapattoni appointment. Better than Venables and certianly better than Stan. He might install some much needed discipline into the Irish camp. However I'd be cautious about expecting him to have any dramatic turnaround on the team's fortunes. I think he'll possibly be too defensive and our limited (talent wise) defenders may have trouble with these tactics.

Also his best days are behind him IMO and I don't know if he'll have the desire or hunger to put his all into the job and go and look at these young up and coming Irish players in the lower divisions on a rain drenched Tuesday evening. On a technical level he will not be in familiar surroundings with our technically limited players and this may not suit the tactics that he wishes to employ in games.

To sum up I think we'll challenge for qualification to South Africa until the final couple of games but might just come up short. Everything being equal I'd have preferred a younger manager with a better knowledge of our players but Trapatonni was one of the best options that actually showed an interest in the job so I can't fault the FAI this time.

"The trio were impressed by his enthusiasm, how he had studied video footage of Ireland’s past two matches – against Wales and Brazil – and his detailed knowledge of the Irish players."

If that's true, then my enthusiasm for this man has increased, that he has already been studying the team & analysing the players. Interesting times ahead.

That's to be expected though. Venables would have had to impress the panel in any way possible. Trap was getting the job regardless of his knowledge of our players.

Venables has been swotting up on Ireland since he got sacked by England/Stan let go. The Trap is currently in a full time role and for him to do some research on our boyo's already shows he is keen. I'm really excited at the appointment. If this guy cannot sort out our lapse defending then we are worse than we thought. It might not be pretty but if we qualify for the WC I couldn't give a monkeys!!!

YI, it doesnt matter whether he goes to watch players play or not, if he studies and analyses video footage, I am sure he has the ability to judge good or bad players and how they play etc. At his age I'm sure he prolly is relishing the idea of not having to do day-to-day club management jobs and with the appointment as Ireland manager allows him this. I'd say he knew as well though at 68 he wasn't going to get many more chances at international level, and therefore that was a key factor, given he has done pretty much everytime in club management, but not so much at international level!

I agree with this. If Gentile/Brady are going to games and he is getting the tapes then I don't really think it matters as he can get live reports from them and can judge players for himself on tape. Besides, it's not like we have a player pool the size of England.

He should be the guest of honour for the Paddys day celebrations. that would be a great birthday for him.

Just watchin sky sports news now. they say he conducted an interview with the reporter in english although a little broken. he was approached by the FAI 10 days ago. He says that Ireland is made up of a squad of 1st division players ( I take it he means premier ) and that there is absolutely no reason Ireland cant qualify. The date he will take the post has still yet to be clarified and SSN are saying he may not take the position in time for the Serbia friendly.

Would you believe that?

He seems to know a fair bit about the players already from what ive heard.

Delighted, happier then I've been with the Irish set up in a long long time.

Can't believe the FAI didn't take Salzburg's press conference into consideration when planning their own, reckon Salzburg have announced it like this as a little dig given that they weren't impressed by the manner Trap was approached?

Really chuffed!

The only disappointment I have with this is that he will see out his contract. I would have liked a friendly in March to give him more time to work with the team. It's not really a major concern though, given the calibre of the candidate was more than we could have ever really asked for.

Happy days indeed!

2 years is right for us. If he's a success and someone else wanted him (e.g. England!) a four year contact wouldnt keep him. On the off chance he's a failure then we wont have to pay off a lengthy expensive contract. (Good to see a lesson learned from Stan)

What's this about maybe not being there for Serbia. Don't they finsish in April and then the Serbia game is in May.

Anyway, as good a piece of news as I've heard for a long long time.

I said in a previous post that i wasn't pushed on him. I honestly didn't think that the FAI could pull something off like this. But I have to admit I'm really looking forward to the next campaign. If he can keep it tight at the back I wouldn't mind winning 1-0 all the time. We where never a team that thumped teams anyway. We could have a 100 chances and still only score a few.

Salzburg confirm Trapattoni's departure
Wednesday, 13 February 2008 12:57
Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg have confirmed that Giovanni Trapattoni will leave them at the end of the season to become Republic of Ireland manager.

The Italian is set to be announced at a conference at the FAI Headquarters in Abbotstown this evening.

The former Juventus, Bayern Munich and Benfica boss has confirmed to RTÉ News that he was approached by the FAI ten days ago.

And he has also revealed that the less time-consuming nature of international management tempted him to accept their offer.

'I'm interested in the Irish job because it will give me more time with my family,' he said.

'Yesterday my solicitor came to an agreement with the FAI, so I have accepted.'

Trapattoni is confident that he can help Salzburg retain the Austrian Bundesliga title that they won convincingly last season.

It has also emerged that the former Italian national coach consulted Liam Brady, who is expected to be included in Trappatoni's backroom team, about the position.

"When the national team asked me I called and asked Liam 'what do you think?'"

"He said 'I think it's a good team'."

Trapattoni said that he asked Brady to work with him.

He added that it is too early to say whether or not he would be in place for the Republic's friendly clash with Serbia in May, saying it was at his present employers' discretion.

From Red Star Salzburg website:

Giovanni Trapattoni has made a decision on his future just before the 2007/2008 T-Mobile Bundesliga resumes after the winter break: The ‘Mister’ is to take on the job of Irish national team manager after the end of the season - for a two-years contract.
Until then the highly successful 68-year-old coach will be fully concentrated on the final 13 matches of the Austrian season as the Bulls seek to successfully defend their title.
